It was investigated whether the scrap tire can be recycled as a construction material for controlling the frost heave of the ground. Some frost heave tests and a frost penetration depth test in the laboratory were performed on the weathered granite soil mitred with variable amount of scrap tire powder under the atmospheric temperature at -$17^{\circ}$ to find the basic effects of the scrap tire on the control of frost. The frost heave control layer of the crushed stone mixed with scrap tire chips directly below thin subbass in the bituminous pavement was found to be effective for practical use. And the equation for the required thickness of this frost heave control layer with freezing index was suggested.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of recycled materials, namely, shredded scrap tire (SST), reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and class C fly ash (CFA) on compressive and tensile strength of concrete. Either SST or RAP was used as an aggregate replacement and class C fly ash (CFA) as Portland cement replacement for making concrete. A total of two types of SST and RAP, namely, chips and screenings were used for replacing coarse and fine aggregates, respectively. A total of 26 concrete mixes containing different replacement level of SST or RAP and CFA were designed. Using the mix designs, cylindrical specimens of concrete were prepared, cured in water tank, and tested for unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and indirect tensile strength (IDT) after 28 days. Experimental results showed aggregate substitution with SST decreased both UCS and IDT of concrete. On the contrary, replacement of aggregate with RAP improved UCS values. Specimens containing RAP chips resulted in concrete with higher IDT values as compared to corresponding specimens containing RAP screenings. Addition of 40% CFA was found to improve UCS values and degrade IDT values of SST containing specimens. Statistical analysis showed that IDT of SST and RAP can be estimated as approximately 13% and 12% of UCS, respectively.

Accumulations of worn-out automobile tires creat fire and health hazards. As a possible solution to the problem of scrap-tire disposal, an experimental study was conducted to examine the potential of using tire chips as aggregate in rubber mortar. This paper examines strength and toughness properties of rubber mortar in which different amounts of rubber-tire particles of several sizes were used as aggregate. The rubber mortar mixtures exhibited lower compressive, bending, tensile than did normal mortar. However, these mixtures did not demonstrate brittle failure, but rather a ductile, plastic failure, and had the ability to absorb a large amount of plastic energy under compressive loads.
There are more than 15 millions cars or motors in Taiwan. According to the statistics from Environmental Protection Administration, the number of resulting scrap tires are near 110 thousand tons each year. The tire recycle programs in Taiwan were first conducted in 1989 and executed by ROC Scrap Tire Foundation. However, the current efficiency of the tire recycling industry still needs to be improved to minimize the environmental problem or fire hazards caused by scrap tires storage. Ten major tire-recycling factories are surveyed in this study. The investigations include the source of scrap tire, the shredding process, the market of products, the management of wastes disposal, and the difficulties of these sectors. As the varieties of the shredding machines of the recycle factories, there are three kinds of final products which include powder, granular, and chips. The wastes, wires and fibers, produced by the shredding process are the major problems fur all the factories. The percentage of the wire and fiber removal from rubbers still needs to be increased. The best approaches found in this study to increase the efficiency of scrap tire recycling processes are proposed which include the improvement of magnetic separation system fiber/rubber separation system and the minimization of waste disposal. A categorized standard of the processing outputs is suggested as a reference for the decision-making of the tire-recycling factories.

This paper describes the results of a series of field experiments which are carried out to assess the reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires. The ground vibration due to train service is measured in Honam Railroad line and Kyongbu Railroad line to assess the ground vibration with the domestic railroad line and train type before field model test. From the results of these tests, frequency on train service is presented from 5Hz to 100Hz and a range of excellence frequency is presented to be about from 20Hz to 40Hz in the domestic railroad line. Also, plate bearing tests are conducted to evaluate the variation of bearing capacity with different thickness of the waste tire layer and the fill layer. Finally, field model test is performed by using tire chips ($5cm{\times}5cm$ in size) as a reduction material of railroad vibration. The reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires increases with increasing the thickness of the waste tire layer and the frequency of the vibration source. The results of this experimental study was shown that the waste tire can be used for reduction of the railroad vibration.
This study is to use results of the experiment on the influence to the strength by mixing powders of wasted tires into regular remicon within a range of little effectiveness in durability, applicability, economic aspect, and workability, to put it to practical use and to apply as basic data from a view of recycling wasted tires as construction materials. And the concrete, which was mixed with 10mm particles with ratio of $0.5\%\;and\;1.0\%$ respectively at 270 of mixing strength, was reduced by $27\%$ in compressive strength compared to normal concrete, whereas concrete mixed with other than 10mm particles showed lower decrease ratio compared to the former by reducing only $1.0\%\~1.5\%$. it is found that as strength increases, the less in quantity of aggregate and the more increase in quantity of cement. When considered to the above result, it is estimated that concrete mixed with wasted tire particles could be better used in conditions of compressive force rather than tensile force, and could also be used for structures with flexural strengths as well. In conclusion, higher strengths could be made using waste tire mix.

In this study, a method of shear crushing and a two-stage disk mill were introduced to grind the waste tire powder. Rubber chips with various size were obtained during the crushing or grinding step. The two-stage disk mill was composed of two drum-type blades rotating at various speed and in opposite directions. Therefore, more roughly surfaced particles of micronized waste tire powder were obtained using shear crushing rather than using conventional cutting crushing. In this study, the shape of shear-crushed waste tire particles was compared with conventional cutting crushing particles by scanning electron microscope. In addition, the particle size analyzer was employed to determine the appropriate particle size of waste ground tire powders obtained in this study.
Because of their mineral composition, tire chips have very low thermal conductivity compared with natural geomaterials, leading to the use of sand-tire rubber mixtures in thermally insulating applications. However, systematic studies evaluating factors affecting the thermal conductivity of sand-tire rubber mixtures have been very limited. Thus, this study investigated the thermal conductivity of sand-tire rubber mixtures with varying size ratios and tire chip fractions according to the degree of saturation (S). Specimens were prepared in insulated cells, and thermal needle probe tests were performed. In addition, the contact angle and solid surface free energy of sand-tire rubber mixtures were investigated. The results of this study revealed that the thermal conductivity decreased with increasing tire chip fraction but increased with increasing water content (or S). However, the trend of increasing thermal conductivity with S varied with the tire chip fraction, and the specimens with tire chip fraction > 0.4 clearly showed a delayed increase in thermal conductivity with increasing S. This reflected that hydrophobic particles (tire chip) affected the dependency of thermal conductivity on S because of the delayed formation of capillary water bridges, which served as additional thermal conduction paths with increased moisture content.
The study presented herein aims to investigate the durability related properties of rubberized concrete. Two types of waste scrap tire rubber were used as fine and coarse aggregate, respectively. The rubber was replaced with aggregate by three crumb rubber and tire chips levels of 5, 15, and 25% for the rubberized concrete productions. In order to improve the transport properties and corrosion resistance of rubberized concretes, SF was replaced with cement at 10% replacement level by weight of total binder content. The transport properties of the rubberized concretes were investigated through water absorption, gas permeability, and water permeability tests. The corrosion behavior of reinforcing bars embedded in plain and silica fume based rubberized concretes was investigated by linear polarization resistance (LPR) test. The results indicated that the utilization of SF in the rubberized concrete production enhanced the corrosion behavior and decreased corrosion current density values. Moreover, the reduction in the water and gas permeability coefficients was observed by the incorporation of SF in plain and especially rubberized concretes.

This study was conducted to investigate removal characteristics of gaseous trimethylamine(TMA) through biofilter packed with waste tire-chips. The sludge in this experiment was collected from an activated sludge operated in a wastewater treatment facility treating malodorous pollutants. The nominal amount of collected sludge was inoculated through packing materials in the filter. The removal efficiencies for varying concentrations and SVs(Space velocity) were assessed based on TMA, COD$_{Cr}$, NO$_3{^-}$-N, NO$_2{^-}$-N, NH$_4{^+}$-N and EPS(Extracellular Polymeric Substances) in leachate, since biofilter had been steady-stately operated. The influent concentration of 10 ppm of TMA was removed to approximately 95% regardless of changing SV at 120 and 180 hr$^{-1}$, but it was lowered to 80 to 90% at SV 240 hr$^{-1}$. As influent concentration was gradually increased from 5 to 55 ppm, the removal efficiencies of TMA were initially high for 95% in the range of 5 to 10 ppm, but lowered to 80% for 10 to 30 ppm. As a part of kinetic study for TMA decomposition, V$_m$(maximum substrate removal rate) and $K_s$(substrate infinity coefficient) were 14.3 g$\cdot$m$^{-3}$$\cdot$h$^{-1}$ and 0.043 g$\cdot$m$^{-3}$, respectively while adapted period was shown in the range of 100 to 150 hr. Also, the EPS concentration was consistently observed from the leachate showing 100 to 200 ppm, which indicates that biofilm has been continuously formed and sustained throughout tire-chips packed reactor.
