The evolutionary structure of tip vortices has been investigated with a two-dimensional LDV system for a plain and a slotted blade, respectively. To analyze the effect of slots which bypasses a part of main stream into the tip face, velocity profiles, vortex sizes, their displacements and turbulence intensities during one revolution of the rotor were measured by the phase averaging process. For the comparison of circumferential velocity components of the plain blade and the slotted blade, the peak values of the slotted blade were lower than those of the plain blade, and axial velocity components of the slotted blade were considerably larger than those of the plain blade. The slotted rotor blade enlarged the core size and made the vortex delayed compared with those of the plain blade at the same wake ages. Turbulence profiles had peaks inside the core radii and decayed gradually in the radial direction of vortex coordinate. Also, using a quasi 3-D LDV measurement technique the budget of turbulence kinetic energy was analyzed in radial direction of the vortex core.
Experimental investigations on the comparison of developments between transient jets and evolving jet diffusion flames have been made in initial injection period. To achieve this experiment, an ignition technique using a residual flame as the ignition source is devised. High speed Schlieren visualizations, and measurements including jet tip penetration velocities and jet widths of the primary vortex are employed to examine the developing processes for several flow conditions. It is seen that the developing behaviors in the presence of flame are greatly different from those in transient jet, and thus the flow characteristics in the transient part are also modified. The discernible differences are shown to consist of the delay of the rollup of the primary vortex, the faster spreading after the rollup due to exothermic expansion, and the survival of only a primary vortex. The growth of primary vortex in the transient jet is properly explained through an impulsively started laminar vortex prior to the interaction. It is also found that the jet tip penetration velocity varies with elapsed time and an increase in Res gives rise to a higher tip penetration velocity.
This paper presents a numerical study on tip vortex cavitation inception predictions based on non-spherical bubble dynamics including splitting and jet noise emission. A brief summary of the numerical method and its validation against a laboratory experiment are presented. The behavior of bubble nuclei is studied in a tip vortex flow field at two Reynolds numbers, provided by a viscous flow solver. The bubble behavior is simulated by an axisymmetric potential flow solver with the effect of surrounding viscous flow taken into account using one way coupling. The effects of bubble nucleus size and Reynolds number are studied. An effort to model the bubble splitting at lower cavitation numbers is also described.
Leakage flow through turbine blade tip gap causes strong leakage vortex near the blade suction side and induces large aerodynamic losses. In this study, the conventional plane tip and various squealer tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shape on the total pressure loss. Three tip gap clearances of 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.0% of blade span were tested. Flow measurement was conducted at one chord downstream from the trailing edge with a five-hole probe. Results showed that the leakage vortex was stronger than passage vortex and the mass averaged overall total pressure loss through the cascade was the lowest for suction side blade tip case. For all tested cases, the area averaged overall total pressure loss was increased as the tip clearance increased.
The effects of squealer rim height on three-dimensional flows and aerodynamic losses downstream of a high-turning turbine rotor blade have been investigated for a typical tip gap-to-chord ratio of h/c=2.0%. The squealer rim height-to-chord ratio is changed to be $h_{st}/c$=0.00(plane tip), 1.37, 2.75, 5.51, and 8.26%. Results show that as $h_{st}/c$ increases, the tip leakage vortex tends to be weakened and the interaction between the tip leakage vortex and the passage vortex becomes less severe. The squealer rim height plays an important role in the reduction of aerodynamic loss when $h_{st}/c{\leq}2.75%$. In the case of $h_{st}/c{\geq}5.51%$, higher squealer rim cannot provide an effective reduction in aerodynamic loss. The aerodynamic loss reduction by increasing $h_{st}/c$ is limited only to the near-tip region within a quarter of the span from the casing wall.
Leakage vortices formed near blade tip causes an increase of total pressure loss near casing endwall region and as a result, the efficiency of rotor decreases. The reduction of rotor efficiency is related to the size of tip clearance. In this study, the three-dimensional flowfields in an axial flow rotor were calculated with varying tip clearance under various flow rates, and the numerical results were compared with experimental ones. The effects of tip clearance and attack angle on the leakage vortex and overall performance, and the less distributions were investigated through numerical calculations. In this study, tip leakage flow rate and total pressure loss by tip clearance were evaluated using numerical results and aprroximate equations were presented to evaluate the reduction of rotor efficiency by tip leakage flow.
It is well-known that high anisotropic characteristic of turbulent flow field is dominant inside tip leakage vortex. This anisotropic nature of turbulence invalidates the use of the conventional isotropic eddy viscosity turbulence model based on the Boussinesq assumption. In this study, to check whether an anisotropic turbulence model is superior to the isotropic ones or not, the results obtained from steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations based on the RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and the Reynolds stress model in two test cases, such as a linear compressor cascade and a forward-swept axial-flow fan, are compared with experimental data. Through the comparative study of turbulence models, it is clearly shown that the Reynolds stress model, which can express the production term and body-force term induced by system rotation without any modeling, should be used to predict the complex tip leakage flow, including the locus of tip leakage vortex center, quantitatively.
