In this paper dynamic responses of an engine, which is supported by hydraulic mount, to throttle tip-in/tip out are analyzed. Because the hydraulic mounts have non-linearity which the characteristics of stiffness and damping vary with frequencies, it is difficult to analyze the dynamic behavior of an engine using general integral algorithms. Convolution integrals and relationships between unit impulse response functions and frequency response functions are therefore used to simulate the transient behavior of an engine indirectly. In time domain, impulse response functions are calculated by two-side discrete inverse Fourier transform of frequency response function achieved by Laplace transform of equations of motion. Considering the fact that the shapes of behavior of an engine simulated by the proposed method are in good agreement with test results, it is confirmed that the proposed method is very effective for the analysis of transient response to throttle tip-in/out of an engine with hydraulic mounts.

Tip clearance loss is a limitation of the improvement of turbomachine performance. Previous studies show the Tip clearance loss is generated by the leakage flow through the tip clearance, and is roughly linearly proportional to the gap size. This study investigates the tip clearance effects on the performance of ducted propeller. The investigation was carried out by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) code CFX14.5. These simulations were carried out to determine the underlying mechanisms of the tip clearance effects. The calculations were performed at three different chosen advance ratios. Simulation results showed that the tip loss slope was not linearly at high advance due to the reversed pressure at the leading edge. Three type of vortical structures were observed in the tip clearance at different clearance size.
The passenger car drivers want in general to feel good driveability, but they sometimes feel uncomfortable by shock and jerk phenomenon when they push or release acceleration pedal with clutch engaged. In this paper, the shock and jerk characteristics are studied on the vehicles of the throttle-by-wire system. With this system, the throttle is not directly controlled by drivers but via a microprocessor. So the control logic of the throttle is very important on tip-in and tip-out driveability. Experiments were carried out on two vehicles which show different control characteristics. The torque control logics were analyzed by measuring cylinder pressures. The results show that special torque control logic is needed at tip-in/out state for good driveability.
To test the effect of various pile tip shape series of model scale loading tests were carried out on test piles with special pile tips. Special pile tips were made using the 3D printer and were attached to the bottom end of the test pile for loading tests. The pile tips were made to have 30°, 45°, 60° inclined tips, as well as a rounded tip. The main objective of the test was to observe the effect of various pile tip shapes on settlement and penetrability of the pile. Moreover, a numerical model simulating the pile loading test carried out in this study was established and verified based on the loading test results. From this, the stress concentration around the pile tip was investigated. This will allow us to analyze the decrease of stress concentration around the pile tip which is the main cause of the pile tip damage during pile installation. However, modifying the pile tip shape will eventually increase the settlement of the pile. By estimating the degree of increase in pile settlement, the viability and the efficiency of the pile shape modification was judged. In addition, case studies on the effect of different pile tip shape and ground conditions on pile settlement and stress dispersion was conducted.

The tip leakage flow passing through the clearance between rotor blade tip and casing shroud has been known to occupy an important portion of the rotor overall loss. In this study, flow characteristics in axial flow rotors with different tip clearances is investigated by experimental and numerical methods. The experimental study was carried out to measure static pressure and velocity profiles at the real rotating test rig. The axial flow rotors used for the experiments have ten blades and three different rotor diameter. The tip clearance heights are 1mm, 3mm, and 4.5mm. Measurements were done using spherical type five-hole probe by non-nulling method. The numerical study was carried out to calculate pressure distributions and velocity vectors at the same condition as the experiments in the flow fields of axial flow rotors using Phoenics code.
Forestry crane work in a forest harvester or forwarder is regarded as one of most hard work requiring a very high level of operation skill. The operator must handle two or more multi-axes joysticks simultaneously to control the multiple manipulators for maneuvering the crane-tip to its intended location. This study has been carried out to develop a crane-tip controller which can intuitively maneuver the crane-tip, resulting in improving the productivity by decreasing the technical difficulty of control as well as reducing the workload. The crane-tip controller consists of a single 2-axis joystick and a control algorithm run on microcontroller. Lab-scale forestry crane was constructed using electric cylinders. The crane-tip control algorithm has the crane-tip follow the waypoints generated on the given path considering the dead band region using LBO (Lateral Boundary Offset). A speed control gain to change the speed of relevant cylinders relatively is applied as well. By the P (Proportional) control within the control interval of 20 msec, the average error of crane-tip control on the predefined straight path turned out to be 14.5 mm in all directions. When the joystick is used the waypoints are generated in real time by the direction signal from the joystick. In this case, the average error of path control was 12.4 mm for straight up, straight forward and straight down movements successively at a certain constant speed setting. In the slant movement of crane-tip by controlling two axes of joystick simultaneously, the movement of crane-tip was controlled in the average error of 15.9 mm when the crane-tip is moved up and down while moving toward forward direction. It concluded that the crane-tip control was possible using the control algorithm developed in this study.
Experiments are carried out to investigate the effect of radial tip clearance on a turbopump inducer, which has two blades with inlet tip blade angle of 7.8 degree and tip solidity of 2.7. Hydraulic and cavitation tests are performed for three cases of tip clearance ratio, that is, 0.026, 0.053, and 0.079. With increase in the tip clearance, inducer head and pressure on the inducer tip decrease. Attached cavitation and cavitation surge are observed in the cavitation tests. In the attached cavitation one cell rotates at the same rotational speed as that of the inducer. Cavitation performance deteriorates with increase in the tip clearance. The level of casing vibration increases in the cavitation condition and the level is very high when the attached cavitation appears.
Tip clearance of centrifugal compressor affects the performance. Larger tip clearance results in lower efficiency. What really affects the performance is the running tip clearance, not the cold tip clearance. When the compressor is operating, blade strain and the pressure difference between impeller backplate and hub affects the running tip clearance. This paper describes measured running tip clearance and its effects on the performance of centrifugal compressor. Cold tip clearance before operation was 0.4 mm and running tip clearance varied from 0.86 mm to 0.25 mm with impeller exit pressure. As the pressure at impeller exit increases, the running tip clearance tends to decreases. The target running tip clearance for Compressor at $100\%$ speed was 0.3 mm, and it turned out to be exactly 0.30 mm from experiment.
