  • The main source of underwater radiated noise of ships is cavitation generated by propeller blades. After the Cavitation Inception Speed (CIS), noise level at all frequencies increases severely. In determining the CIS, it is based on the results observed with the naked eye during the model test, however accuracy and consistency of CIS values are becoming practical issues. This study was carried out with the aim of developing a technology that can automatically recognize cavitation images using deep learning technique based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Model tests on a three-dimensional hydrofoil were conducted at a cavitation tunnel, and tip vortex cavitation was strictly observed using a high-speed camera to obtain analysis data. The results show that this technique can be used to quantitatively evaluate not only the CIS, but also the amount and rate of cavitation from recorded images.

  • Three types of 100 kW-class tidal stream turbines are proposed and their performance is studied both numerically and experimentally. Following a wind turbine design procedure, a base blade is derived and two additional blades are newly designed focusing more on efficiency and cavitation. For the three designed turbines, a CFD is performed by using FLUENT. The calculations predict that the newly designed turbines perform better than the base turbine and the tip vortex can be reduced with additional efficiency increase by adopting a tip rake. The performance of the turbines is tested in a towing tank with 700 mm models. The scale problem is carefully investigated and the measurements are compared with the CFD results. All the prediction from the CFD is supported by the model experiment with some quantitative discrepancy. The maximum efficiencies are 0.49 (CFD) and 0.45 (experiment) at TSR 5.17 for the turbine with a tip rake.

  • Cavitation occurs inevitably in marine propellers rotating at high speed in the water, which is a major cause of underwater radiated noise. Cavitation-induced noise from propellers rotating at a specific frequency not only reduces the sonar detection capability, but also exposes the ship's location, and it causes very fatal consequences for the survivability of the navy vessels. Therefore cavity inception speed (CIS) is one of the important factors determining the special performance of the ship. In this study, we present a method using computer vision that can detect and quantitatively estimate tip vortex cavitation on a propeller rotating at high speed. Based on the model test results performed in a large cavitation tunnel, the effectiveness of this method was verified.

  • High-fidelity RANS simulations are presented for a ducted marine propulsor, including verification & validation (V&V) using available experimental fluid dynamics (EFD) data. CFDSHIP-IOWA is used with $\textsc{k}-\omega$ turbulence model and extensions for relative rotating coordinate system and Chimera overset grids. The mesh interpolation code PEGASUS is used for the exchange of the flow information between the overset grids. Intervals V&V for thrust, torque, and profile averaged radial velocity just downstream of rotor tip are reasonable in comparison with previous results. Flow pattern displays interaction and merging of tip-leakage and trailing edge vortices. In interaction region, multiple peaks and vorticity are smaller, whereas in merging region, better agreement with EFD. Tip-leakage vortex core position, size, circulation, and cavitation patterns for $\sigma=5$ also show a good agreement with EFD, although vortex core size is larger and circulation in interaction region is smaller.

  • Three inducers were designed to avoid cavitation instabilities. This was accomplished by avoiding the interaction of tip cavity with the leading edge of the next blade. The first one was designed with extremely larger leading edge sweep, the second and third ones were designed with smaller incidence angle by reducing the inlet blade angle or increasing the design flow rate, respectively. The inducer with larger design flow rate has larger outlet blade angle to obtain sufficient pressure rise. The inducer with larger sweep could suppress the cavitation instabilities in higher flow rates more than 95% of design flow coefficient, owing to weaker tip leakage vortex cavity with stronger disturbance by backflow vortices. The inducer with larger outlet blade angle could avoid the cavitation instabilities at higher flow rates, owing to the extension of the tip cavity along the suction surface of the blade. The inducer with smaller inlet blade angle could avoid the cavitation instabilities at higher flow rates, owing to the occurrence of the cavity first in the blade passage and its extension upstream. The cavity shape and suction performance were reasonably simulated by three dimensional CFD computations under the steady cavitating condition, except for the backflow vortex cavity. The difference in the growth of cavity for each inducer is explained from the difference of the pressure distribution on the suction side of the blades.

  • Since a cavitation pattern in model scale can be different from that in full scale, it has been highly demanded to measure a fluctuating pressure induced by propeller in full scale. For the verification of the cavitation test for 105K lanker in the large cavitation tunnel in Samsung Ship Model Basin(SSMB), an effective pressure fluctuation measurement system was developed and a series of full scale measurements was carried out. These results were compared with those of cavitation tests in SSMB. The measured results in full scale gave good agreements to those in model tests. The fluctuating pressure at $2^{nd}$ blade frequency in full scale seems to be highly dependent upon tip loading.

  • The purpose of the present research is to suppress cavitation instabilities by using a circumferential groove. The circumferential groove was designed based on CFD so that the tip leakage vortex is trapped by the groove and does not interact with the next blade. Experimental results show that the groove can suppress rotating cavitation, asymmetric cavitation and cavitation surge. However, weak instabilities with higher frequency could not be suppressed by the groove. From the analysis of pressure pattern similar to that for rotor-stator interaction, it was found that the higher frequency components are caused by the interaction of backflow vortices with the inducer blades.

  • A three-dimensional higher order boundary element method based on the B-spline is presented. The method accurately models piecewise continuous bodies and induced velocity potentials using B-spline tensor product representations, and it is capable of obtaining accurate pointwise values for the potential and its derivatives, especially in the trailing edge and tip region of the lift generating body, which may be difficult or impossible to evaluate with constant panel methods. In addition, we implement a wake roll-up and examine the tip vortex formation in the near wake region. The results are compared with existing numerical results and the results of experiments performed out at the cavitation tunnel of Chungnam National University.
