  • A steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation was conducted to investigate the distribution of the Reynolds stress tensor inside tip leakage vortex of a linear compressor cascade. Two different inlet flow angles ${\beta}=29.3^{\circ}$(design condition) and $36.5^{\circ}$(off-design condition) at a constant tip clearance size of $1\%$ blade span were considered. Classical methods of solid mechanics, applied to view the Reynolds stress tensor in the principal direction system, clearly showed that the high anisotropic feature of turbulent flow field was dominant at the outer part of tip leakage vortex near the suction side of the blade and endwall flow separation region, whereas a nearly isotropic turbulence was found at the center of tip leakage vortex. There was no significant difference in the anisotropy of the Reynolds normal stresses inside tip leakage vortex between the design and off-design condition.

Experimental Study on Tip Clearance Effects for Performance Characteristics of Ducted Fan

  • Currently, a new generation of ducted fan UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) is under development for a wide range of inspection, investigation and combat missions as well as for a variety of civil roles like traffic monitoring, meteorological studies, hazard mitigation etc. The current study presents extensive results obtained experimentally in order to investigate the tip clearance effects on performance characteristics of a ducted fan for small UAV systems. Three ducted fans having different tip clearance gap and with same rotor size were examined under three different yawed conditions of calibrated slanted hot-wire probe. Three dimensional velocity flow fields were measured from hub to tip at outlet of the ducted fan. The analysis of data were done by PLEAT (Phase locked Ensemble Averaging Technique) and three non-linear differential equations were solved simultaneously by using Newton -Rhapson numerical method. Flow field characteristics such as tip vortex and secondary flow were confirmed through axial, radial and tangential velocity contour plots. At the same time, the effects of tip clearance on axial thrust and input power were also investigated by using wind tunnel measurement system. For enhancing the performance of ducted fan, tip clearance level should be as small as possible.

  • The finite element method were used to determine the stress intensity factor of cracked plate. The stress method, displacement method and J Integral are most popular finte element method. ANSYS proposed another a kind of displacement method. In this paper, it was examined that the accuracy and utility of the ANSYS method could believable to determine the stress intensity factors of centered inclined crack. Generally, inclined crack has two portion of stress intensity factors, tensile mode F1 and shear mode F2. For the purpose of increasing the accuracy of stress intensity factors, examined the effect of the numbers of nodes and elements, crack tip element size and number of partition of the crack tip vicinity. It was found that the method proposed by ANSYS is useful and has high accuracy. Accuracy of calculated stress intensity factors was increased by increase of the number of nodes and elements, and at the small size of crack tip elements can get more highly accuracy.

  • High resolution dopant profiling in semiconductor devices has been an intense research topic because of its practical importance in semiconductor industry. Although several techniques have already been developed. it still requires very expensive tools to achieve nanometer scale resolution. In this study we demonstrated a novel dopant profiling technique with nanometer resolution using very simple setup. The newly developed technique measures the thermoelectric voltage generated in the contact point of the SPM probe tip and MOSFET surface instead of electrical signals widely adopted in previous techniques like Scanning Capacitance Microscopy. The spatial resolution of our measurement technique is limited by the size of contact size between SPM probe tip and MOSFET surface and is estimated to be about 10 nm in this experiment.

  • In this paper, the plastic zone size ahead of the crack tip of DENT specimen and the crack growth length under cyclic loading were measured by ESPI system. These results of the plastic zone size measured by ESPI system were compared with the plastic zone size proposed by Irwin. The results of tile crack growth length measured by it were also compared with them measured by the image analysis system. It is confirmed that it is possible to measure the plastic zone and crack growth length.

단일 과대하중에 의한 레이저 용접 판재의 피로균열 전파거동 (Effect of Single Overload on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Laser Welded Sheet Metal)

  • In this study, we investigated fatigue crack growth behavior of laser welded sheet metal due to a single overload. Fatigue specimens were made using butt joint of cold rolled sheet metal that was welded by $CO_2$ laser. The fatigue crack propagation tests were performed in such a way that fatigue loading was parallel to the weld line while crack propagation was perpendicular to the weld line. Single overload was applied when fatigue crack tip was arrived near the weld line. The distances between the crack tip and the weld line at which a single overload was applied were 6, 4 and 2mm. The effect of specimen thickness and overload ratio on the fatigue behavior was determined. The plastic zone size of crack tip due to the single overload was determined from the finite element analysis. For investigating fatigue crack growth behavior, we used different thickness specimen 0.9mm and 2.0mm, and variable overload ratio applied fatigue crack propagation test.   • Design of a reformer consisting of combustion chamber and reforming chamber was investigated for a 1 kW and a 5 kW polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), respectively, using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). First, the 1kW reformer was considered to obtain the reliability of the numerical study. It was modeled, calculated and compared with experimental data. Second, the 5kW reformer was considered for a geometric study. Three tip sizes (35, 40, and 45 mm) and five aspect ratios was selected. It was found that the optimum was at tip sizes of 40 and 45 mm, at aspect ratios of -10% and -20% of the standard length.

축류 압축기 팁 누설 유동의 비정상 특성에 관한 연구 (Unsteadiness of Tip Leakage Flow in an Axial Compressor)

  • Three dimensional unsteady numerical calculations were performed to investigate unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow in an axial compressor. The first stage of the four-stage low-speed research axial compressor was examined. Since this compressor has a relatively large tip clearance, the unsteadiness of the tip leakage flow is induced. Through the results from the unsteady calculations, the process of the induced unsteady tip leakage flow was investigated. It was shown that the leakage flow that occurred at a rotor blade tip clearance affected the pressure distribution on the pressure side near the tip of the adjacent blade, thus caused the fluctuation of the pressure difference between the pressure side and suction side. Consequently, the unsteady tip leakage flow was induced at the adjacent rotor blade. The unsteady feature of the tip leakage flow was changed as the operating point was moved. The interface between the tip leakage flow and the main flow only affected the trailing edge region at the design point whereas the interface influenced up to the leading edge at the low flow rate point. As the flow rate decreased, additionally, it was seen that the vortex size of the tip leakage flow increased and the relatively large length scale disturbance occurred. On the other hand, using frequency analysis, it was shown that the unsteadiness was not associated with the rotor speed and was about 40% of the blade passing frequency. This feature was explained in the rotor relative frame of reference, and the frequency decreased as the flow rate decreased.

  • The effect of relative position of the stationary turbine blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade tip and shroud heat transfer. The local mass transfer coefficients were measured on the tip and shroud fur the blade fixed at six different positions within a pitch. A low speed stationary annular cascade with a single turbine stage was used. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation technique was used for the detailed mass transfer measurements on the tip and the shroud. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is fixed to $1.5{\times}10^5$. The results show that the incoming flow condition and heat transfer characteristics significantly change when the relative position of the blade changes. On the tip, the size of high heat/mass transfer region along the pressure side varies in the axial direction and the difference of heat transfer coefficient is up to 40% in the upstream region of the tip because the position of flow reattachment changes. On shroud, the effect of tip leakage vortex on the shroud as well as tip gap entering flow changes as the blade position changes. Thus, significantly different heat transfer patterns are observed with various blade positions and the periodic variation of heat transfer is expected with the blade rotation.

대규모 와 모사에 의한 3차원 소형축류홴의 운전부하에 따른 난류유동 특성치 고찰 (An Investigation on Turbulent Flow Characteristics According to the Operating Loads of Three-Dimensional Small-Size Axial Fan by Large Eddy Simulation)

  • This paper handled an investigation on the turbulent flow characteristics of three-dimensional small-size axial fan(SSAF) according to operating loads. Also, it was carried out by unsteady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional large eddy simulation(LES). The downstream flow type of SSAF is changed from axial flow to radial flow around the beginning of stall region at the aerodynamic performance curve. Axial mean velocity component largely grows around blade tip at the operating point of A to D, but transverse and vertical mean velocity components as well as Reynolds shear stresses highly develop around blade tip at the operating point of E to H. On the other hand, the peak value of turbulent kinetic energy developed around blade tip shows the highest at the operating point of E.
