  • The free vibration and stability analysis of a spinning composite shaft modelled as a thin-walled closed beam is performed for several design parameters, such as ply angle, aspect ratio, and spin speed. The governing equations of spinning shafts based on the Timoshenko beam theory are derived via Hamilton's variational principle. Coriolis acceleration and anisotropy of constituent materials are incorporated in the derivation. The equations of motion are then transformed to the standard form of an eigenvalue problem for free vibration and stability analysis. Analytical results both for uniform circular cylindrical shaft and rectangular cross-section shaft are obtained by using extended Galerkin method, and the results are compared with those from FEM ANSYS analysis for a verification.

  • This paper presents a dynamic modeling method for the indeterminate spindle-bearing system supported by multiple bearings of different types. A spindle-bearing system supported by ball and cylindrical roller bearings is considered. The de Mul's bearing model is extended for calculating ball and cylindrical roller bearing stiffness matrices with inclusion of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment. The dependence between spindle shaft reaction forces and bearing stiffness is effectively resolved using an iterative approach. The spindle rotor dynamics is established with the Timoshenko beam theory based finite elements. The spindle reaction forces, bearings stiffness and spindle natural frequencies are obtained with taking into account spindle radial load, ball bearing axial preload and rotational speed effects. The developed method is verified by comparing the simulation results with those from a commercial program.

  • Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are known as intelligent methods for modeling the behavior of physical phenomena because of it is a soft computing technique and takes data samples rather than entire data sets to arrive at solutions, which saves both time and money. ANN is successfully used in the civil engineering applications which are suitable examining the complicated relations between variables. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are advanced composites that successfully used in various engineering design. The FGMs are nonhomogeneous materials and made of two different type of materials. In the present study, the bending analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) beams presents on theoretical based on combination of mixed-finite element method, Gâteaux differential and Timoshenko beam theory. The main idea in this study is to build a model using ANN with four parameters that are: Young's modulus ratio (Et/Eb), a shear correction factor (ks), power-law exponent (n) and length to thickness ratio (L/h). The output data is the maximum displacement (w). In the experiments: 252 different data are used. The proposed ANN model is evaluated by the correlation of the coefficient (R), MAE and MSE statistical methods. The ANN model is very good and the maximum displacement can be predicted in ANN without attempting any experiments.

  • This paper aims to present an analytical methodology to investigate influences of nanoscale and surface energy on buckling stability behavior of perforated nanobeam structural element, for the first time. The surface energy effect is exploited to consider the free energy on the surface of nanobeam by using Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity theory. Thin and thick beams are considered by using both classical beam of Euler and first order shear deformation of Timoshenko theories, respectively. Equivalent geometrical constant of regularly squared perforated beam are presented in simplified form. Problem formulation of nanostructure beam including surface energies is derived in detail. Explicit analytical solution for nanoscale beams are developed for both beam theories to evaluate the surface stress effects and size-dependent nanoscale on the critical buckling loads. The closed form solution is confirmed and proven by comparing the obtained results with previous works. Parametric studies are achieved to demonstrate impacts of beam filling ratio, the number of hole rows, surface material characteristics, beam slenderness ratio, boundary conditions as well as loading conditions on the non-classical buckling of perforated nanobeams in incidence of surface effects. It is found that, the surface residual stress has more significant effect on the critical buckling loads with the corresponding effect of the surface elasticity. The proposed model can be used as benchmarks in designing, analysis and manufacturing of perforated nanobeams.

  • Large amplitude free vibration and thermal post-buckling of shear flexible Functionally Graded Material (FGM) beams is studied using finite element formulation based on first order Timoshenko beam theory. Classical boundary conditions are considered. The ends are assumed to be axially immovable. The von-Karman type strain-displacement relations are used to account for geometric non-linearity. For all the boundary conditions considered, hardening type of non-linearity is observed. For large amplitude vibration of FGM beams, a comprehensive study has been carried out with various lengths to height ratios, maximum lateral amplitude to radius of gyration ratios, volume fraction exponents and boundary conditions. It is observed that, for FGM beams, the non-linear frequencies are dependent on the sign of the vibration amplitudes. For thermal post-buckling of FGM beams, the effect of shear flexibility on the structural response is discussed in detail for different volume fraction exponents, length to height ratios and boundary conditions. The effect of shear flexibility is observed to be predominant for clamped beam as compared to simply supported beam.

  • Some results on the hydroelasticity of ultra large container ships related to the beam structural model and restoring stiffness achieved within EU FP7 Project TULCS are summarized. An advanced thin-walled girder theory based on the modified Timoshenko beam theory for flexural vibrations with analogical extension to the torsional problem, is used for formulation of the beam finite element for analysis of coupled horizontal and torsional ship hull vibrations. Special attention is paid to the contribution of transverse bulkheads to the open hull stiffness, as well as to the reduced stiffness of the relatively short engine room structure. In addition two definitions of the restoring stiffness are considered: consistent one, which includes hydrostatic and gravity properties, and unified one with geometric stiffness as structural contribution via calm water stress field. Both formulations are worked out by employing the finite element concept. Complete hydroelastic response of a ULCS is performed by coupling 1D structural model and 3D hydrodynamic model as well as for 3D structural and 3D hydrodynamic model. Also, fatigue of structural elements exposed to high stress concentration is considered.

  • The three-dimensional finite element modeling of a composite rotor blade is very hard and requires much computation effort. The efficient method to model a composite beam is necessary for the dynamic and aeroelastic analyses of rotor blades. In this study, the beam modeling method of a composite rotor blade is studied using VABS. The computer program, VABS (Variational Asymptotic Beam Section Analysis), uses the variational asymptotic method to split a 3-D nonlinear elasticity problem into 2-D cross-sectional analysis and 1-D nonlinear beam problem. The VABS can produce the sectional stiffness coefficients of composite rotor blades with various cross section and initial twist/curvatures, and recover the original 3-D distribution of displacement/strain/stress fields. The results of various cross section beams show that VABS gives us the accurate results comparared to commercial codes and does not need much computation effort. It can be concluded that VABS provides the efficient method to establish the FE model of a composite rotor blade.

  • One and three dimensional whipping response analyses of a naval surface combatant subjected to an underwater explosion bubble pulse were carried out to compare the efficiency and accuracy according to the modeling methods. In 1-D analysis, program UNDEXWHIP developed by KIMM was used, which is based on the thin-walled Timoshenko's beam theory and on the modal analysis method using wetted vibratory modes of the hull girder. In 3-D analysis, three finite element models were suggested using LS-DYNA/USA code, such as 3-D beam model considering geometric shape of wetted side shell, coarse and fine 3-D F.E. models. Through the comparison of results from the 1-D and 3-D analyses, it could be confirmed that 1-D analysis result is in good agreement with 3-D analysis ones, and that fine 3-D F.E. model, shock analysis one, is also used both in the shock response and whipping response analyses for the analyst effort and time savings.

  • The estimation of springing responses for recent ships are carried out and application to a ship design are described. To this aim, springing effects on hull girder were re-evaluated including non-linear wave excitations and torsional vibrations of the hull. The Timoshenko beam model was used to calculate stress distribution on the hull girder by the superposition method. The strip method was employed to calculate the hydrodynamic forces and moments on the hull. In order to remove the irregular frequencies, we adopted 'rigid lid' on the hull free surface level and added asymptotic interpolation along the high frequency range. Several applications to the existing ships were carried out. They are Bishop and Price's container ship, S-175 container ship, large container, VLCC and ore carrier. One of them is compared with ship measurement result while another with that of model test. Comparison between analytical solution and numerical one for homogeneous beam type artificial ship shows good agreement. It is found that most springing energy came from high frequency waves for the ships having low natural frequency and North Atlantic route etc. Therefore, the high frequency tail of the wave spectrum should be increased by $\omega^{-3}\;instead\;of\;\omega^{-4}\;or\;\omega^{-5}$ for springing calculation.
