  • Earned Value Management System(EVMS) is a highly efficient tool in the project management, but it cannot easily determine the Actual Cost due to the indistinct criteria and extensive data. This study introduces a EVMS for project management and its actual case based on EVMS and ERP system which some additional modules are installed for performance measurement. It is expected that this new method enables a company to improve transparency by specifying expense items in detail and to switch quarterly settlement to monthly by reducing the time of calculation.

A Case Study on Assessing the Productivity of a BIM team in a Construction Company

  • Due to the labor-intensiveness, high investment cost, long execution time, frequent change orders, and many stakeholders in a BIM project, a BIM manager is bound to face a lot of risks to make decisions in cost managing process. Since the productivity of a BIM team will affect the execution cost, this study investigates a simple method of assessing the productivity of a BIM team using the working timesheet records of the team. In this research, the productivity of a BIM team is defined as the effective working floor area (in square meters) of BIM uses per labor-time (in man-months) spent by the team. After the applicability of this method is tested by regression analysis using data from 5 real BIM projects in the construction phase, it is found that the simple productivity definition adopted in the method, although easy-to-implement, does not produce a statistically constant productivity value. More research is therefore needed in the future to devise better indicator(s) for assessing the productivity of a BIM team.

  • It seems that a primary concern of the project-based company, which provides a large scale product or service over long term period, is to run a successful project through systematic project process control and control costs. One of the typical project control methods is Earned Value Management System(EVMS) which analyses the precess through performance measurement. Even though the EVMS is a highly efficient tool in the managerial aspect, it cannot easily determine the Planned Value(PV), Actual Cost(AC), or Earned Value(EV) due to the indistinct criteria and extensive data. The accurate calculation of AC in particular, is the basic of project management, but most companies record direct personnel expenses or direct expenses only. Since they calculate indirect expenses based on the estimated ratio, it limits the systematic project management that reflects changes in profit and loss of a company. This study introduces a EVMS for project management and its actual case based on EVMS and ERP system which some additional modules are installed for performance measurement. 중소형 설계 엔지니어링사에 적합한 ERP 시스템 구축에 관한 연구 (A Study on Construction of ERP System for Small and Medium sized Design Engineering Company)

  • ERP system has been spreaded from large companies to many small and medium sized companies, and it is recognized as a basic system for optimum and efficient work process. The focus is moving from manufacturing companies to various specialized companies. Once ERP system was introduced to those specialized companies, there was attempt to customize an ordinary system which used in manufacturing companies, but it was hard to take effect due to the lack of experience and an inadequate analysis of work process. Some of foreign ERP packages are possible to be constructed for some companies. However, they are originally aim at a large enterprise and it is also very difficult to construct and maintain. For this reason, small and midium sized companies are having a difficulty to construct ERP system. This study deals with the construction of ERP system for small and medium sized design engineering company and introduction of the crucial points throughout the construction and requirements for composition module and customization of each main module. Based on the findings of this study, the specialized non-manufacturing companies are expected to have efficient and practical application of ERP system when they select and customize the ERP package of manufacturing companies.
