The necessity of data compression scheme for volume data has been increased because of the increase of data capacity and the amount of network uses. Now we have various kinds of compression schemes, and we can choose one of them depending on the data types, application fields, the preferences, etc. However, the capacity of data which is produced by application scientists has been excessively increased, and the format of most scientific data is 3D volume. For 2D image or 3D moving pictures, many kinds of standards are established and widely used, but for 3D volume data, specially time-varying volume data, it is very difficult to find any applicable compression schemes. In this paper, we present a compression scheme for encoding time-varying volume data. This scheme is aimed to encoding time-varying volume data for visualization. This scheme uses MPEG's I- and P-frame concept for raising compression ratio. Also, it transforms volume data using Daubechies D4 filter before encoding, so that the image quality is better than other wavelet-based compression schemes. This encoding scheme encodes time-varying volume data composed of single precision floating-point data. In addition, this scheme provides the random reconstruction accessibility for an unit, and can be used for compressing large time-varying volume data using correlation between frames while preserving image qualities.
This paper examined dynamic characteristics of high speed trains using a time varying frequency transform. Fourier transform based methods are frequently used for the calculation of the dynamic characteristics of trains in the frequency domain, but they cannot represent the time-varying characteristics. Therefore it is necessary to examine their characteristics using a time-varying frequency transform. For the examination, the non-stationary vibration of wheelset, bogie, and carbody are measured using accelerometers and stored in a data aquisition system. They are processed with localization of the data by modulating with a window function, and Fourier transform is taken to each localized data, called the short-time Fourier transform. From the processed results, time varying auto-spectral density, cross-spectral density, frequency response, and coherence functions have been calculated. From the analysis, it is confirmed that the time varying frequency transform is a useful method for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of high speed trains.

In this paper, a discrete-time variable structure controller for linear time-varying sampled-data systems with disturbances is proposed. The proposed method guarantees that the system state if globally uniformly ultimately bounded (G.U.U.B), and the ultimate bound is shown to be the order of T, O(T), where T is a sampling period.
An important use of data warehousing is to provide temporal views over the history of source data. It is significant that nearly all data warehouses are dependent on relational database technology, yet relational databases provide little or no real support for temporal data. Therefore, in is difficult to obtain accurate information for time-varying data. In this paper, we are going to design a temporal data warehouse to support time-varying data efficiently. For this purpose, we present a method to support temporal query by combining a temporal query process layer with the relational database which is used as a source database in an existing data warehouse. We introduce the Temporal Aggregate Tree Strategy (TATS), and suggest its algorithm for the way to aggregate the time-varying data that is changed by the time when the temporal view is created. In addition, The TATS and the materialized view creation method of the existing data warehouse have been evaluated. As a result, the TATS reduces the size of the fact table and it shows a good performance for the comparison factor in case of processing the query for time-varying data.

This paper describes a new algorithm to compute and track the deformation of an isosurface component defined in a time-varying volumetric data. Isosurface visualization is one of the most common method for effective visualization of volumetric data. However, most isosurface visualization algorithms have been developed for static volumetric data. As imaging and simulation techniques are developed, large time-varying volumetric data are increasingly generated. Hence, development of time-varying isosurface visualization that utilizes dynamic properties of time-varying data becomes necessary. First, we define temporal correspondence between isosurface components of two consecutive timesteps. Based on the definition, we perform an algorithm that tracks the deformation of an isosurface component that can be selected using the Contour Tree. By repeating this process for entire timesteps, we can effectively visualize the time-varying data by displaying the dynamic deformation of the selected isosurface component.

Digital redesign is yet another efficient tool to convert a pre-designed analog controller into a sampled-data one to maintain the analog closed-loop performance in the sense of state matching. A rising difficulty in developing a digital redesign technique for trackers with time-varying references is the unavailability of a closed-form discrete-time model of a system, even if it is linear time-invariant. A way to resolve this is to approximate the time-varying reference as a piecewise constant one, which deteriorates the state matching performance. Another remedy may be to decrease a sampling period, which however could numerically destabilize the optimization-based digital redesign condition. In this paper, we develop a digital redesign condition for time-varying trackers by approximating the time-varying reference through a triangular hold and by introducing delta-operated discrete-time models. It is shown that the digitally redesigned sampled-data tracker recovers the performance of the pre-designed analog tracker under a fast sampling limit. Simulation results on the formation flying of satellites convincingly show the effectiveness of the development.

Interval prediction based on the empirical distribution function for the class of time series with time varying coefficients is discussed. To this end, strong mixing property of the model is shown and results due to Fotopoulos et. al.(1994) are employed. A simulation study is presented to assess the accuracy of the proposed interval predictor.
In this paper, we propose a time-varying modified minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detector for the detection of higher data rate signals in a multirate asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system which is signaled in a fast Rayleigh fading channel. The interference viewed by a higher data rate symbol will be periodic due to the presence of a lower data rate symbol which spans multiple higher data rate symbols. The detection is carried out on the basis of a modified MMSE criterion which incorporates differential detection and the ratio of channel coefficients in two consecutive observation intervals inherently compensating the fast variation of the channel due to fading. The numerical results obtained by the MMSE detector with time-varying detection show around 3 dB (M=2) and 6 dB (M=4) performance improvement at a BER of $10^{-3}$ in the AWGN channel, while introducing more computational complexity than the MMSE detector without time-varying detection. At a higher $E_b/N_0$, the proposed scheme can achieve a BER of approximately $10^{-3}$ in the presence of fast channel variation which is an improvement over other schemes.

Adaptive memory management is a serious issue in data stream management. Data stream differ from the traditional stored relational model in several aspect such as the stream arrives online, high volume in size, skewed data distributions. Data skew is a common property of massive data streams. We propose the predicted allocation strategy, which uses predictive processing to cope with time varying data skew. This processing includes memory usage estimation and indexing with timestamp. Our experimental study shows that the predictive strategy reduces both required memory space and latency time for skewed data over varying time.

In this paper, modified two-port time-domain passivity approach is proposed for stable bilateral control of teleoperators under time-varying communication delay. We separate input and output energy at each port of a bilateral controller, and propose a sufficient condition for satisfying the passivity of the bilateral controller including time-delay. Output energy at the master port should be less than the transmitted input energy from the slave port with time-delay, and output energy at the slave port should be less than the transmitted input energy from the master port with time-delay. For satisfying above two conditions, two passivity controllers are attached at each port of the bilateral controller. A packet reflector with wireless internet connection is used to introduce serious time-varying communication delay of teleoperators. Average amount of time-delay was about 190(msec) for round trip, and varying between 175(msec) and 275(msec). Moreover some data packet was lost during the communication due to UDP data communication. Even under the serious time-varying delay and packet loss communication condition, the proposed approach can achieve stable teleoperation in free motion and hard contact as well.
