  • In this paper we consider an approach to a formal linearization for time-variant nonlinear systems. A time-variant nonlinear sysetm is assumed to be described by a time-variant nonlinear differential equation. For this system, we introduce a coordinate transformation function which is composed of the Chebyshev polynomials. Using Chebyshev expansion to the state variable and Laguerre expansion to the time variable, the time-variant nonlinear sysetm is transformed into the time-variant linear one with respect to the above transformation function. As an application, we synthesize a time-variant nonlinear observer. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate the validity of...

  • As time-variant reliability approaches become increasingly used for service life prediction of the aging infrastructure, the demand for computer solution methods continues to increase. Effcient computer techniques have become well established for the reliability analysis of structural systems. Thus far, however, this is largely limited to time-invariant reliability problems. Therefore, the requirements for time-variant reliability prediction of deteriorating structural systems under time-variant loads have remained incomplete. This study presents a computer program for $\underline{REL}$iability of $\underline{T}$ime-Variant $\underline{SYS}$tems, RELTSYS. This program uses a combined technique of adaptive importance sampling, numerical integration, and fault tree analysis to compute time-variant reliabilities of individual components and systems. Time-invariant quantities are generated using Monte Carlo simulation, whereas time-variant quantities are evaluated using numerical integration. Load distribution and post-failure redistribution are considered using fault tree analysis. The strengths and limitations of RELTSYS are presented via a numerical example.

  • This paper focuses on congestion control for ATM network with uncertain time-variant delays. The time-variant delays can be distinguished into two distinct components. The first one is represented by time-variant queueing delays in the intermediate switches that are occurred in the return paths of RM cells. The next one is a forward path delay. It is solved by the VBR model which quantifies the data propagation from the sources to the switch. Robust $H_8$ control is studied for solving congestion problem with norm-bounded time-varying uncertain parameters. The suitable robust $H_8$ controller is obtained from the solution of a convex optimization problem through LMI technique.

  • This study was conducted to develop an optimal runoff bydrograph model by comparison of the peak discharge and time to peak between observed and simulated flows derived by four different models, that is, linear time-invariant, linear time-variant, nonlinear time-invariant and nonlinear time-variant models under the conditions of heavy rainfalls with regionally uniform rainfall intensity in short durations at nine small watersheds. The results obtained through this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Parameters for four models including linear time-invariant, linear time-variant, nonlinear time-invariant and nonlinear time-variant models were calibrated using a trial and error method with rainfall and runoff data for the applied watersheds. Regression analysis among parameters, rainfall and watershed characteristics were established for both linear time-invariant and nonlinear time-invariant models. 2. Correlation coefficients of the simulated peak discharge of calibrated runoff hydrographs by using four models were shown to be a high significant to the peak of observed runoff graphs. Especially, it can be concluded that the simulated peak discharge of a linear time-variant model is approaching more closely to the observed runoff hydrograph in comparison with those of three models in the applied watersheds. 3. Correlation coefficients of the simulated time to peak of calibrated runoff hydrographs by using a linear time-variant model were shown to be a high significant to the time to peak of observed runoff hydrographs than those of the other models. 4. The peak discharge and time to peak of simulated runoff hydrogaphs by using linear time-variant model are verified to be approached more closely to those of observed runoff hydrographs than those of three models in the applied watersheds. 5. It can be generally concluded that the shape of simulated hydrograph based on a linear time-variant model is getting closer to the observed runoff hydrograph than those of three models in the applied watersheds. 6. Simulated hydrographs using the nonlinear time-variant model which is based on more closely to the theoritical background of the natural runoff process are not closer to the observed runoff hydrographs in comparison with those of three models in the applied watersheds. Consequently, it is to be desired that futher study for the nonlinear time-variant model should be continued with verification using rainfall-runoff data of the other watersheds in addition to the review of analyical techniques.

  • Resource-constrained project scheduling problems with variant processes can be represented and solved using a logic-based terminological language called RSV (resource constrained project scheduling with variant processes). We consider three different variants for formalizing the RSV-scheduling problem, the optimizing variant, the number variant and the decision variant. Using the decision variant we show that the RSV- problem is NP-complete. Further we show that the optimizing variant (or number variant) of the RSV-problem is computable in polynomial time iff. the decision variant is computable in polynomial time.

  • The acoustical sources of intake and exhaust systems in fluid machines are often characterized by the source impedance and strength using linear frequency-domain modeling. In the case of the sources which are nonlinear and time-variant, however, the source parameters were sometimes incorrectly obtained. In this paper, the source model and direct measurement technique are modified in order to evaluate the effect due to nonlinear and periodically time-varying source character as well as the linear property of the reflectivity of in-duct fluid machine source. With a priori known kinematical information of the source, the types of nonlinear time-variant terms can be presumed by a simple physical model, in which there is practically no restriction on the form of the model. The concept of source impedance can be extendable by introducing the linear frequency response function for each nonlinear or time-variant input. Extending the conventional method and adapting the reverse MISO technique, it is possible to develop a direct method that can deal with the nonlinear time-variant source parameters. The proposed direct method has a novel feature that there is no restriction on the probability or spectral natures of the excited sound pressure data. The present method is verified by the simulated measurements for simplified fluid machines. It is thought that the proposed method would be useful in predicting the insertion loss or the radiated sound level from intake or exhaust systems.

  • We define a language $\mathcal{RS}$, a subclass of the scheduling language $\mathcal{RS}V$ (resource constrained project scheduling with variant processes). $\mathcal{RS}$ involves the determination of the starting times for ground activities of a project satisfying precedence and resource constraints, in order to minimize the total project duration. In $\mathcal{RS}$ ground activities and two structural symbols (operators) 'seq' and 'pll' are used to construct activity-terms representing scheduling problems. We consider three different variants for formalizing the $\mathcal{RS}$-scheduling problem, the optimizing variant, the number variant and the decision variant. Using the decision variant we show that the problem $\mathcal{RS}$ is $\mathcal{NP}$-complete. Further we show that the optimizing variant (or number variant) of the $\mathcal{RS}$-problem is computable in polynomial time iff the decision variant is computable in polynomial time.

  • Linear harmonic analysis is a convenient and generally accurate method to use for the acoustic analysis of intake and exhaust silencers for IC engines. The major uncertainty in this form of modelling is the characterisation of the source, which is inherently nonlinear and time-variant. Experimental methods are generally used to determine the source characteristics, and in particular the indirect method is most suitable for an IC-engine source. With reference to an idealised linear time-variant source, it is found that the characteristics of a time-variant source as determined by the indirect method have no physical relevance. The direct method of experimental measurement appears to have some advantage over the indirect method, although in practice it is difficult to apply to an IC engine source. Again, an idealised linear time-variant source can be used to indicate that the characteristics of a time-variant source as determined by the direct method also have no physical relevance. Strangely, these meaningless measured source properties can nevertheless be used to accurately predict the radiated noise from an IC engine and silencer system.

  • The parameters of civil engineering structures have time-variant characteristics during their service. When extremely large external excitations, such as earthquake excitation to buildings or overweight vehicles to bridges, apply to structures, sudden or gradual damage may be caused. It is crucially necessary to detect the occurrence time and severity of the damage. The unscented Kalman filter (UKF), as one efficient estimator, is usually used to conduct the recursive identification of parameters. However, the conventional UKF algorithm has a weak tracking ability for time-variant structural parameters. To improve the identification ability of time-variant parameters, an adaptive UKF with forgetting factor (AUKF-FF) algorithm, in which the state covariance, innovation covariance and cross covariance are updated simultaneously with the help of the forgetting factor, is proposed. To verify the effectiveness of the method, this paper conducted two case studies as follows: the identification of time-variant parameters of a simply supported bridge when the vehicle passing, and the model updating of a six-story concrete frame structure with field test during the Yangbi earthquake excitation in Yunnan Province, China. The comparison results of the numerical studies show that the proposed method is superior to the conventional UKF algorithm for the time-variant parameter identification in convergence speed, accuracy and adaptability to the sampling frequency. The field test studies demonstrate that the proposed method can provide suggestions for solving practical problems.
