  • Explosive evaporative removal process of biological tissue by absorption of a CW laser has been simulated by using gelatin and a multimode Nd:YAG laser. Because the point of maximun temperature of laser-irradiated gelatin exists below the surface due to surface cooling, evaporation at the boiling temperature is made explosively from below the surface. The important parameters of this process are the conduction loss to laser power absorption (defined as the conduction-to-laser power parameter, Nk), the convection heat transfer at the surface to conduction loss (defined as Bi), dimensionless extinction coefficient (defined as Br.), and dimensionless irradiation time (defined as Fo). Dependence of Fo on Nk and Bi has been observed by experiment, and the results have been compared with the numerical results obtained by solving a 2-dimensional conduction equation. Fo and explosion depth (from the surface to the point of maximun temperature) are increased when Nk and Bi are increased. To find out the minimum laser power for explosive evaporative removal process, steady state analysis has been also made. The limit of Nk to induce evaporative removal, which is proportional to the inverse of the laser power, has been obtained.

  • We determined the alloy composition of the liquid-phase epitaxy(LPE) grown $Al_{x}$G $a_{1-x}$ As by the photoreflectance(PR), and observed the variation of PR signal by changing the condition of annealing and thickness of epilayer. As the measuring temperature was decreased, the broadening parameter was decreased, and the amplitude of PR signal was increased. When the temperature of annealing was increased, the surface carrier concentration was decreased and then the shape and amplitude of PR signal were affected by the surface electric field. The structure change was observed when the specimen was annealed for long time at a high temperature. We found that the surface electric field increased when the thickness of epilayer was decreased by etching, because the band bending was increased by the decreased of the width of depletion layer....

  • The model of two-temperature magneto-thermoelasticity for a non-simple variable-thermal-conductivity infinitely-long solid cylinder is established. The present cylinder is made of an isotropic homogeneous thermoelastic material and its bounding plane is traction-free and subjected to a time-dependent temperature. An exact solution is firstly obtained in Laplace transform space to obtain the displacement, incremental temperature, and thermal stresses. The inversion of Laplace transforms has been carried out numerically since the response is of more interest in the transient state. A detailed analysis of the effects of phase-lags, an angular frequency of thermal vibration and the variability of thermal conductivity parameter on the field quantities is presented.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate nonlinear dynamic responses of functionally graded composite beam resting on the nonlinear viscoelastic foundation subjected to moving mass with temperature rising. The non-linear strain-displacement relationship is considered in the finite strain theory and the governing nonlinear dynamic equation is obtained by using the Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then the governing equation is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The influences of temperature rising, material distribution parameter, nonlinear viscoelastic foundation parameters, magnitude and velocity of the moving mass on the nonlinear dynamic responses are investigated. Also, the buckling temperatures of the functionally graded beams based on the finite strain theory are obtained.

  • A106 Carbon Steel has recently been used as the material for pipes, nozzles, and tank shells in nuclear power plants. Its corrosion resistance gives the steel many advantages for use in structures under high temperature and high pressure. This steel is also expected to be used as a structural material in the shipbuilding industry for applications involving severe conditions, such as high temperature and pressure. In this study, the mechanical properties of A106 carbon steel were evaluated in regard to its corrosion times. The tensile and yielding strengths decreased as the corrosion time increased. In particular, the tensile strength was influenced by corrosion. In addition, an acoustic emission (AE) technique was used to clarify the microscopic damage to specimens that had undergone corrosion for a certain period. It was found that AE parameters, such as events, energy, duration time, and amplitude were useful for evaluating the degree of damage and remaining life of the corroded specimen. Various properties of the waveform and frequency range were also seen, based on the degree of damage to the specimen from the corrosion time.

  • Despite the low removal efficiencies reported by previous studies, electro-flotation still stands out among other microalgae removal methods for its economical and environmental benefits. To enhance removal efficiency, the important factors that limit the performance of this method must be investigated. In this study, the possible ways of increasing the removal efficiency of microalgae have been explored by investigating the effects of several important variables in electro-flotation. Eight parameters, namely flotation time, rising time, current density, pH, conductivity, electrode distance, temperature and initial concentration were evaluated using a one-parameter-at-a-time approach. Results revealed that the operational parameters that greatly affected the removal efficiency of microalgae were electro-flotation time, current density, pH, and initial concentration. The effect of conductivity, electrode distance, and temperature on removal efficiency were insignificant. However, they exhibited positive an indirect positive effect on power demand, which is nowadays considered an equally important aspect in the running of a feasible and economically efficient electro-flotation process.

  • Excessively elevated temperature can lead to cracks in prestressed concrete (PC) continuous bridge with box girder on the pier top at cement hydration age. This paper presents a case study for evaluating the behavior of PC box girder during the early hydration age using a two-stage computational model, in the form of computer program ANSYS, namely, 3-D temperature evaluation and determination of mechanical response in PC box girders. A numerical model considering time-dependent wind speed and ambient temperature in ANSYS for tracing the thermal and mechanical response of box girder is developed. The predicted results were compared to show good agreement with the measured data from the PC box girder of the Zhaoshi Bridge in China. Then, based on the validated numerical model three parameters were incorporated to analyze the evolution of the temperature and stress within box girder caused by cement hydration heat. The results of case study indicate that the wind speed can change the degradation history of temperature and stress and reduce peak value of them. The initial casting temperature of concrete is the most significant parameter which controls cracking of PC box girder on pier top at cement hydration age. Increasing the curing temperature is detrimental to prevent cracking.

  • This paper is about the evaluation of stress response and recovery using biosignals and fuzzy theory. We caused mental stress by means of a coin-stacking task. During the experiment, 4 kinds of biosignals, including frontalis EMG, ECG, peripheral skin temperature and skin conductance level, were acquired. Then, the degree of stress was assessed by synthetically those signals using fuzzy inference. From the fuzzy inference result, the parameters (amount of physiological change / amount of imposed stress) and (time to 25% recovery), which represent response and recovery respectively, were derived. We made a two-dimensional point graph using the response parameter as an abscissa and the recovery parameter as an ordinate for each subject.

  • The effect of a periodic and a chaotic' behaviour in the Bonhoeffer-Van der Pol(BVP) oscillation of the nerve membrane driven by a periodic stimulating current $A_1=cos\;{\omega}\;t$ are investigated by numeric analysis and hardware Implementation. To control the chaotic motion, we are suggested by temperature parameter c, $c=c(1+\eta\;cos\;{\Omega}\;t)$ which the values of $\eta,\;Omega$ varied respectively. The feasibilities of chaotic and periodic phenomena were analysed by phase plane and time series.
