Strain-rate and temperature have significant effects on the one-dimensional (1D) compression behavior of soils. This paper focuses on the bonding degradation effect of soil structure on the time and temperature dependent behavior of soft structured clay. The strain-rate and temperature dependency of preconsolidation pressure are investigated in double logarithm plane and a thermal viscoplastic model considering the combined effect of strain-rate and temperature is developed to describe the mechanical behavior of unstructured clay. By incorporating the bonding degradation, the model is extended that can be suitable for structured clay. The extended model is used to simulate CRS (Constant Rate of Strain) tests conducted on structural Berthierville clay with different strain-rates and temperatures. The comparisons between predicted and experimental results show that the extended model can reasonably describe the effect of bonding degradation on the stain-rate and temperature dependent behavior of soft structural clay under 1D condition. Although the model is proposed for 1D analysis, it can be a good base for developing a more general 3D model.
We consider the single machine scheduling problem with a rate-modifying activity and time-dependent deterioration after the activity. The class of scheduling problems with rate-modifying activities and the class of scheduling problems with time-dependent processing times have been studied independently. However, the integration of these classes is motivated by human operators of tasks who has fatigue while carrying out the operation of a series of tasks. This situation is also applicable to machines that experience performance degradation over time due to mal-position or mal-alignment of jobs, abrasion of tools, and scraps of operations, etc. In this study, the integration of the two classes of scheduling problems is considered. We present a mathematical model to determine job-sequence and a position of a rate-modifying activity for the integration problem. Since the model is difficult to solve as the size of real problem being very large, we propose genetic algorithms. The performance of the algorithms are compared with optimal solutions with various problems.
Chloride induced reinforcement corrosion is widely accepted to be the most frequent mechanism causing premature degradation of reinforced concrete members, whose economic and social consequences are growing up continuously. Prevention of these phenomena has a great importance in structural design, and modern Codes and Standards impose prescriptions concerning design details and concrete mix proportion for structures exposed to different external aggressive conditions, grouped in environmental classes. This paper focuses on reinforced concrete column section load carrying capacity degradation over time due to chloride induced steel pitting corrosion. The structural element is considered to be exposed to marine environment and the effects of corrosion are described by the time degradation of the axial-bending interaction diagram. Because chlorides ingress and consequent pitting corrosion propagation are both time-dependent mechanisms, the study adopts a time-variant predictive approach to evaluate residual strength of corroded reinforced concrete columns at different lifetimes. Corrosion initiation and propagation process is modelled by taking into account all the parameters, such as external environmental conditions, concrete mix proportion, concrete cover and so on, which influence the time evolution of the corrosion phenomenon and its effects on the residual strength of reinforced concrete columns sections.
This paper is to introduce an article published in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2003. In this research, a fracture mechanics model is developed to illustrate the importance of time-dependence far brittle fractured rock. In particular a model is developed fer the time-dependent degradation of rock joint cohesion. Degradation of joint cohesion is modeled as the time-dependent breaking of intact patches or rock bridges along the joint surface. A fracture mechanics model is developed utilizing subcritical crack growth, which results in a closed-form solution for joint cohesion as a function of time. As an example, a rock block containing rock bridges subjected to plane sliding is analyzed. The cohesion is found to continually decrease, at first slowly and then more rapidly. At a particular value of time the cohesion reduces to value that results in slope instability. A second example is given where variations in some of the material parameters are assumed. A probabilistic slope analysis is conducted, and the probability of failure as a function of time is predicted. The probability of failure is found to increase with time, from an initial value of 5% to a value at 100 years of over 40%. These examples show the importance of being able to predict the time-dependent behavior of a rock mass containing discontinuities, even for relatively short-term rock structures.
This study was to investigate time-dependent degradation process under various pH condition for organophosphorus(org-p) insecticides, namely Demeton-s-methyl, diazinon, Parathion, Phenthoate, and EPN in several waters. They were analysed by GC-FTD according to standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater. In pH=4, diazinon showed disappearance after 14 days in chromatogram. In pH=11, org-p insecticides were almost degradable after 7 days. In this condition, effect of pH on degradation process was greater than of light. In pH=7, org-p insecticides persisted residues after 112 days except Demeton-s-methyl. In BOD5 120, 250 ppm and domestic water, org-p insecticides showed also rapid degradation process.

The contents of this paper include a non-destructive technique for evaluating the degradation of the boiler superheater tube in a fossil power plant through an electrochemical polarization test. Correlation between Ip of polarization parameter and SP-DBTT for the superheater tubes in long-term use was obtained. 1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel was degraded by softening, and the degree of degradation was dependent upon carbides with Cr and Mo elements. Since brittle fracture at low temperature and ductile fracture mode at high temperature were shown, similarity between standard Charpy and small punch tests could be found. In addition, SP-DBTT showing the degree of degradation was higher, as the time-in use of the materials got longer. Electrolyte including picric acid of 1.3 g in distilled water of 100ml at 25.deg. C temperature and sodium tridecylbenzene sulfonate with 1g could be applied to evaluate the degradation of 1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel by means of the electrochemical polarization test. Ip and Ipa values measured through the electrochemical test are the appropriate parameters for representing the degradation of the superheater tube(1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel) for the fossil power plant. It is poassible to evaluate the degradation of materials with different time histories electrochemically, by Ip value only, at field test.
Radiation degradation of crosslinked polyethylene(XLPE) was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), The results of TGA were compared with FT-IR, melting temperature, oxidation induction time, and elongation at break on the XLPE exposed by $\gamma$-ray. 5% decomposition temperature of $\gamma$-ray irradiated XLPE showed similar tendencies with the case of elongation at break. Both properties agreed below 1000 KGy, however, did not show any remarkable characteristics above 1000 kGy, these properties can be useful to evaluate the radiation degradation of XLPE for only low irradiated region. Above 1000 kGy, the thermal decomposition activation energy showed decreased, on the contrary, increasing below 1000 kGy. Compared with FT-IR spectrum of irradiated XLPE, it was confirmed that the oxidation reaction was still occurring below 1000 kGy. Radiation degradation of XLPE was dependent upon the irradiation doses, TGA can be a useful tool to evaluate the degradation.
This paper is to investigate feasibility on quantitative aging state of epoxy coating on concrete wall in containment structure under operation of nuclear power plants. For evaluating the physical characteristics of the epoxy coating, adhesion strengths of two kinds of degraded epoxy coating systems on both steel surfaces and concrete surfaces were measured via accelerated aging. Comparatively impedance data taken by ultrasonic test were also taken to relate with adhesion data. After aging, in case of concrete, from half of specimens, aging of epoxy coating was developed. As for steel, on $4^{th}$ inspection day, adhesion force was failed. To improve reliability on quality degradation of epoxy, relationship between adhesion and impedance was analyzed. By tracing to co-respond to these data, it was possible to Fig. out physical state of as-built epoxy coating. The possibility to develop new methodology of time - dependent aging state on epoxy coating was found and discussed.

Based on the correlation analysis result of preceding research, the biodegradabilities of cellulose fibers were closely related to the moisture regain of the samples, which reflects the hydrophilicity and internal structure of the fibers. In addition to this factor, it was expected that the biodegradation conditions influence the biodegradability of fibers. In this study, widely used cellulose fibers including cotton, rayon, and acetate were used. The biodegradabilities of cellulose fibers were measured by soilburial test, and then the degradation behaviors based on each condition were compared. Moreover, the effects of degradation conditions such as humidity of the soil were investigated. Changes in the internal structure of samples were also observed by X-ray analysis according to the soil burial time. It was shown that humidity of soil facilitated the degradation of cotton, rayon, and acetate fibers, showing higher degradation rate with higher humidity in soil. This effect was shown to be much greater in the fibers of high moisture regain such as cotton and rayon. In respect of microstructure change, crystallinities and their crystal size of fibers decreased remarkably in the soil of higher humidity. It was revealed that degradation of crystalline area was more dependent on the soil humidity than that of amorphous area.
The aim of this research is to assess the use of high purity potassium ferrate (VI) for the efficient removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), one of the potential micro-pollutant found in aqueous waste. In addition, various parametric studies have enabled us to deduce the mechanism in the degradation process. The pH and concentration of sulfamethoxazole enable the degradation of pollutants. Moreover, the time-dependent degradation nature of sulfamethoxazole showed that the degradation of ferrate (VI) in presence of sulfamethoxazole followed the pseudo-second order kinetics and the value of rate constant increased with an increase in the SMX concentration. The stoichiometry of SMX and ferrate (VI) was found to be 2 : 1 and the overall rate constant was estimated to be 4559 L2/mmol2/min. On the other hand, the increase in pH from 8.0 to 5.0 had catalyzed the degradation of SMX. Similarly, a significant percentage in mineralization of SMX increased with a decrease in pH and concentration. The presence of co-existing ions and SMS spiked real water samples was extensively analyzed in the removal of SMX using ferrate (VI) to simulate studies on real matrix implication of ferrate (VI) technology.
