  • Flash point is one of the major physical properties used to evaluate fire hazards of the combustible liquids. Properties showing relative fire hazards of the combustible liquids are heat release rate(HRR), peak heat release rate(PHRR), time to ignition(TTI), mass loss rate, and yield of $CO/CO_2$. The relationships between flash points and fire properties of the combustible liquids were examined in this study. For this study, mass loss rate and time to ignition were measured to calculate fire properties of the combustible liquids. The results showed that good correlations could be found between flash point and time to ignition, time to peak heat release rate, and the propensity to flashover. From a presented results, the parameters can be used to evaluate relative hazards of the combustible liquids on fire.

  • This study was performed to test the combustive properties of Pinus rigida specimens treated with phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) additives. Each Pinus rigida specimen was painted three times with 15 wt% P-N additive solutions at room temperature. After drying the treated specimens, the combustion properties were examined using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). The time to ignition (TTI) for the treated specimens was 90 to 148 s except for the specimen treated with PP/$4NH_4^+$, and the time to flameout (TF) was 556 to 633 s, which was longer than that of virgin plate. While the The specimens treated with P-N additives showed 12.5 to 43.4% higher mean heat release rate ($HRR_{mean}$) and 11.8 to 43.1% higher total heat release (THR) than virgin plate. The effective heat of combustion (EHC) was by 2.9 to 17.5% lower than that of virgin plate. It can thus be concluded that the combustion-retardation properties were partially improved compared to those of virgin plate.

  • It was conceived from the realization that there was a lack of studies on the fire risk compared to utility and importance of plastic which is widely used. In this study, the fire hazard of five types of plastic products was measured by Cone Calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). As a result, the time to ignition (TTI) of polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plate delayed TTI (196 s), and polystyrene (PS) plate had the shortest TTI of 19 s. The total heat release (THR) of PS plate was measured at 213.07 % higher than the lowest measured PVC plate. Also, the PS plate will have 1.45 to 4.21 times higher $CO_2$ than other plastics, resulting in the highest incomplete combustion and the greatest possible damage of life. Thus, assessing the risk of fire revealed that PS plate is the most dangerous and PVC is the safest.

  • This study investigated the structure and combustion characteristics of four species, Timber Douglas-fir being used construction materials (finishes), Lauan, Cryptomeria japonica, Pinus densiflora trees in the area. In lookong into the ignition characteristics was a time range of ignition (TTI) appeared in the 21 s~32 s, especially Pinus densiflora TTI is ignited in a relatively rapid 601 s to 21 s than the other materials were destroyed in the 631 s. The maximum heat release rate and average heat release rate is Pinus densiflora > Lauan > Cryptomeria japonica > Douglas-fir showed a net. Barrel emissions are Lauan > Douglas-fir > Pinus densiflora > Cryptomeria japonica was in order. The total emissions was postponed Pinus densiflora $424.80m^2/m^2$, Lauan $185.93m^2/m^2$. Douglas-fir carbon emissions of 1460, showing 0.185 kg/kg CO maximum value from s $CO_2$ values show the maximum value to 15,986 kg/kg in 750 s stopped in the 3,090 s. Next, the study suggested methods to utilize as the basic data for evaluating the safety of the fire as a building material.

  • This study examined the combustion and thermal characteristics of imported woods for building materials in Korea. Wooden specimens were confirmed by a cone calorimeter according to the KS F ISO 5660-1 standard. The combustion properties of the wooden specimens were measured in terms of the heat release rate (HRR), total heat released (THR), mass lose rate (MLR), and ignition time (time to ignition; TTI). The optical microscope was used for determine the anatomical characteristics of wood pit and structure. Also, the thermal properties were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to determine the thermal stability of wooden specimens. The result of this experiment would be useful for fundamentals of guiding the combustion properties and thermal stability using wood application.

  • This study was performed to test the combustive properties of Pinus rigida plates treated with piperazinomethyl-bisphosphonic acid (PIPEABP), methylpiperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (MPIPEABP), and N,N-dimethylethylenediaminomethyl- bis-phosphonic acid (MDEDAP). Pinus rigida specimens were painted in three times with 15 wt% alkylenediaminoalkyl- bis-phosphonic acid solutions at the room temperature. After drying specimen treated with chemicals, combustive properties were examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). As a result, the combustion-retardation properties were increased by due to the treated alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acid solutios in the virgin Pinus rigida. Especially, the specimens treated with chemicals showed both the later time to ignition (TTI) (148-116 s) and longer time to flameout (Tf) (633-529 s) than those of virgin plate by reducing the burnig rate. Compared with virgin pinus rigida plate, the specimens treated with the alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acids showed partially low combustive properties. However the specimens treated with PIPEABP showed both the higher peak heat release rate (PHRR) (187.56 $kW/m^2$) and higher total heat release rate (THRR) (75.7 $MJ/m^2$) than those of virgin plate.

  • This study was performed to understand combustion properties four major Indonesian wood species such as Albizia, Gmelina, Mangium and Mindi were investigated by cone-calorimeter for better utilization of theses wood species. Heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (TSR), specific mass loss rate (SMLR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), time to ignition (TTI), flame time (FT), specific extinction area (SEA), smoke production rate (SPR) and CO compound production rate were measured. HRR, THR and FT were proportional to the density of woods. Albizia showed the highest HRR, while Mindi had the lowest HRR. For SPR, Albizia showed the highest value due to its higher SEA. On the other hand, Mindi had the lowest SPR due to a lower SEA value. The highest smoke emission was for Albizia at the beginning of combustion. After 300 seconds, smoke emission of Gmleina and Mangium was increased greatly. Mangium and Mindi showed the highest total carbon dioxide emission. Expecially, Gmelina released the highest carbon monoxide during the combustion period and presented three times higher $CO/CO_2$ ratio than those of other species due to incomplete combustion.
