Chemical weathering of forest soils can reduce atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration over geologic time scales, providing many essential elements for life. Although many studies have been conducted on the effects of elevated atmospheric $CO_2$ on forest carbon storage using open top chambers and FACE (Free air $CO_2$ enrichment) facilities since the 1990s, studies on chemical weathering of forest soils under elevated $CO_2$ are relatively rare. Here I review on how elevated atmospheric $CO_2$ can affect the chemical weathering of forest soils and suggest directions on future research. Despite the recent advances in chemical weathering of forest soils under elevated atmospheric $CO_2$, it is still not clear how the large volume of forest soils would react under the condition. Future studies on weathering of forest soils covering large areas from the tropics to the polar regions with carefully monitored pre-treatment data would provide key information on how soils, the Earth's life sustaining engine, change under climate change.
Generally, the design capacity of the rainwater harvesting unit is determined by trial and error method that is repeatedly calculating various analysis scenarios with capacity, reliability, and rainwater utilization ratio, etc. This method not only takes a lot of time to analyze but also involves a lot of calculations, so analysis errors may occur. In order to solve the problem, this study suggested a way to directly determine the minimum capacity to meet arbitrary target reliabilities using the global optimization method. The method was implemented by simulation model with particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms using Python language. The pyswarm that is provided as an open-source of python was used as optimization method, that can explore global optimum, and consider constraints. In this study, the developed program was applied to the design data for the rainwater harvesting constructed in Cheongna district 1 in Incheon to verify the efficiency, stability, and accuracy of the analysis. The method of determining the capacity of the rainwater harvesting presented in this study is considered to be of practical value because it can improve the current level of analytical technology.
Cloud of Things (CoT) can provide IoT applications with unlimited storage functions and processing power supported by cloud services. However, in a centralized cloud of things, it can create a single point of failure that can lead to bottleneck problems, outages of the CoT network. In this paper, to solve the problem of centralized cloud of things and interoperate between different service domains, we propose an IoT service interoperability system using distributed fog computing and blockchain technology. Distributed fog is used to provide real-time data processing and services in fog systems located at a geographically close distance to IoT devices, and to enable service interoperability between each fog using smart contracts and distributed ledgers of the blockchain. The proposed system provides services within a region close to the distributed fog entrusted with the service from the cloud, and it is possible to access the services of other fogs without going through the cloud even between fogs. In addition, by sharing a service right token issuance information between the cloud and fog nodes using a blockchain network, the integrity of the token can be guaranteed and reliable service interoperability between fog nodes can be performed.
The linear curve fitting methods such as the Hvorslev method and the Bouwer and Rice method provide a rapid and simple means to analyze slug test data for estimating in-situ hydraulic conductivity (k) of geologic material. However, when analyzing a slug test in a relatively compressible aquifer, these methods have difficulties in fitting a straight line to the semi-logarithmic plot of the test data that shows a concave-upward curvature because the linear curve fitting methods ignore the role of the compressibility or specific storage ($S_s$) of an aquifer. The comparison of the Hvorslev method and the Bouwer and Rice method is made far a partially-penetrating well geometry to show analytically that the Hvorslev method estimates higher hydraulic conductivity than the Bouwer and Rice method except that the well intake section locates very close to the bottom of the aquifer. The effect of fitting a straight line to the slug test data is evaluated along with the dimensionless compressibility parameter (${\alpha}$) ranging from 0.001 to 1. A modified linear curve fitting method that is expanded from Chirlin's approach to the case of a partially penetrating well with the basic-time-lag fitting method is introduced. A case study for a compressible glacial till is made to verify the proposed method by comparing with a type curve method (KGS method).
This study examined the risk of accidents when handling hazardous materials in hazardous materials storage facilities without safety facilities. In the case of illegal dangerous cargo containers, the burning rate is very fast in the case of fire, which leads to explosions, that are damaging and difficult to control. In addition, accidents that occur in flammable liquid hazardous materials are caused mostly by accidents that occur in the space due to leakage. Therefore, the variables that affect these accidents were derived and the influence of these variables was investigated. Numerical and computational fluid dynamics programs were used to obtain the following final results. First, when a flammable liquid leaks into a specific space, it is influenced by temperature and relative humidity until a certain concentration (lower limit of combustion) is reached. In the case of temperature, it was found that the reaching time was shorter than the flash point In addition, the effect of variables on pool fire accidents of leakage tanks is somewhat different, but the variables that have the largest influence are the wind speed. Therefore, it is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data for similar numerical analysis and it will provide useful numerical information about the accidental leakage of hazardous materials under various research conditions.
Since vegetation significantly influences on soil carbon and nutrient storage, vegetation change has been focused on terrestrial carbon and nutrient cycling studies. In this study we investigated soil carbon and major nutrient capitals at the abandoned fields, which had different vegetation composition: a three year abandoned field ($AGR_3$), two ten years abandoned fields ($PD_{10}$ dominant with Pinus densiflora and Fraxinus rhynchophylla and $PM_{10}$ dominant with Populus maximowiczii), and an over sixty years forest ($FOR_{60}$). which were located at Hongcheon-gun, Kangwon-do, South Korea. Both main effects for organic matter (%) were significant: shallow soil > deep soil and $FOR_{60}=PM_{10}$ > $AGR_3=PD_{10}$. Nitrogen concentrations at $PM_{10}$ were the highest, while the lowest at $PD_{10}$. Available phosphorus concentrations were the highest at $PD_{10}$, which were over 10 times of site $FOR_{60}$ and $AGR_3$ at 0-10 cm soil depth. The average organic matter ($173Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and nitrogen contents ($10Mg\;ha^{-1}$) of $PM_{10}$ and $FOR_{60}$ were higher than those of $AGR_3$ and $PD_{10}$ by 57% and 42%, respectively. The available phosphorus contents above 30 cm mineral soil at $PD_{10}$ ($3.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and $PM_{10}$ ($1.3Mg\;ha^{-1}$) were over 120 times and 40 times more than at $FOR_{60}$. Calcium ($3.7Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and magnesium contents ($2.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$) at $FOR_{60}$ were twice or three times higher than at other sites. Organic matter amounts in 0-10 cm and 10-30 em soil had significant positive relationships with nitrogen, calcium, and magnesium contents, but not available phosphorus and potassium contents. This study could not identify the effect of chronological factor and vegetation composition on soil carbon and nutrient capital owing to diverse topography as well as limited study sites. However, this study suggests the accuracy of investigation for regional carbon and nutrient sequestration can be achieved by considering the period of abandoned time on the fields and the land use types. These results may suggest the benefits of forest restoration for soil carbon and nutrient accumulation in marginal agricultural lands in South Korea.
Fuel oxygenates, such as Methyl tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is additive in gasoline used to reduce air pollution. Gasoline components and fuel additives can leak: form underground storage tanks. MTBE is far more water soluble than gasoline hydrocarbons like BTEX then it travels at essentially the same velocity as groundwater. MTBE in drinking water causes taste and odor problems. Therefore, the purpose of the this study is to examine the ability of ground tire to sorb MTBE in water. The study consisted of running both batch and column tests to determine the sorption capacity, the required sorption equilibration time, and the flow through utilization efficiency of ground tire. The batch test result indicated that ground tire can attain equilibrium sorption capacities about 0.5 mg of MTBE. The result of column test indicate that ground tire has on the 36% utilization rate. Finally, it is clear that ground tire represented an attractive and relatively inexpensive sorption medium for a MTBE. Authors thought that to determine the economic costs of ground tire utilization, the cost to sorb a given mass of contaminant by ground tire will have to be compared to currently accepted sorption media. The cost comparison will also have to include regeneration and disposal cost.
This study was conducted to know the optimum conditions for overwinter culture of sweetpotato stems in PE film house. The stems will be used as transplant shoots in the next year instead of sprouts produced from storage roots. Sweetpotato stems were cut at field on harvest season and planted in PE film house under three different conditions of PE film mulching, tunnel, or mulching plus tunnel in comparison with the non-treatment of PE film on October 10 and November 10. The survival rate of sweetpotato stems, which was evaluated on April 10 after overwinter, was higher in the treatment planted on October 10 than that on November 10, and with PE film treatments, it was higher in tunnel or mulching plus tunnel than that of the non-treatment of PE film. The survival rate of sweetpotato stems to planting densities was 95-96% in 10$\times$2cm (333 stems/$m^2$) or in 10$\times$4cm (250 stems/$m^2$) when compared with 10$\times$2cm (500 stems/$m^2$). The survival rate under low temperature showed 95% until 20 days at 5$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, and 0% within 5 days at 2$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$. From these results, it was concluded that there were optimum conditions that cutting time is middle October, planting density is 10$\times$3cm, and minimum maintenance temperature is 5$^{\circ}C$ in growing conditions of sweetpotato stems. Root yield produced by trans-planting shoots using the stems was similar to yield by shoots produced from roots, and the survival rate was not different among varieties.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) may be released from plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) articles. In the cases of various methods for the quantitative analysis of migrating DEHP, there are much differences in migrating quantity according to the experimental methods. It is therefore important to make the comparison and analysis between these two results. A study of DEHP migration from blood and infusion bags has been carried out in different methods to evaluate the amount of DEHP migration using gas chromatograph and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Five PVC bags were cut into plane sheets in size of $40{\times}10{\times}0.4mm$, then were immersed in extraction solvent for an hour to release DEHP. It was determined by a gas chromatograph that $23.2{\sim}70.9{\mu}g/mL$ of DEHP was extracted. While extraction solvent was injected into PVC bags which were then placed for an hour to leach DEHP out. It was checked by a UV-vis spectrophotometer that the concentration of DEHP in extraction solvent was $24.8{\sim}41.3{\mu}g/mL$. Two results show different values according to the extraction conditions and experimental methods and the gas chromatographic results were converted into UV-vis spectroscopic results on condition that DEHP would be extracted equally per unit time and unit contact area. It was concluded that DEHP migrating amounts are approximately equal in two analytical methods.
