  • In this study, we propose a novel method to detect and enhance the feature of ST-segment which offers the crucial information for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction and ischemia. With this aim, PQRST features of Electrocardiogram initially are detected and subsequently ST-segment are estimated. And Dynamic Time Warping(DTW) transformation is applied recursively to minimize the difference in time between ST-segments and calculate the minimum cumulative distance that decides the degree of similarity among ST-segments. As of the results, the inherent characteristic of ST-segment can be emphasized in terms of time parameter and thus the diagnostic features of a ST-segment can be revealed further.

  • This paper presents a novel on-line trajectory optimization framework based on automatic time warping, which performs the time warping of a reference motion while optimizing character motion control. Unlike existing physics-based character animation methods where sampling times for a reference motion are uniform or fixed during optimization in general, our method considers the change of sampling times on top of the dynamics of character motion in the same optimization, which allows the character to effectively respond to external pushes with optimal time warping. In order to do so, we formulate an optimal control problem which takes into account both the full-body dynamics and the change of sampling time for a reference motion, and present a model predictive control framework that produces an optimal control policy for character motion and sampling time by repeatedly solving the problem for a fixed-span time window while shifting it along the time axis. Our experimental results show the robustness of our framework to external perturbations and the effectiveness on rhythmic motion synthesis in accordance with a given piece of background music.

  • Dynamic time warping (DTW) is the main algorithms for time series alignment. However, it is unsuitable for quasi-periodic time series. In the current situation, except the recently published the shape exchange algorithm (SEA) method and its derivatives, no other technique is able to handle alignment of this type of very complex time series. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm that combines the advantages of the SEA and the DTW methods. Our main contribution consists in the elevation of the DTW power of alignment from the lowest level (Class A, non-periodic time series) to the highest level (Class C, multiple-periods time series containing different number of periods each), according to the recent classification of time series alignment methods proposed by Boucheham (Int J Mach Learn Cybern, vol. 4, no. 5, pp. 537-550, 2013). The new method (quasi-periodic dynamic time warping [QP-DTW]) was compared to both SEA and DTW methods on electrocardiogram (ECG) time series, selected from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) public database and from the PTB Diagnostic ECG Database. Results show that the proposed algorithm is more effective than DTW and SEA in terms of alignment accuracy on both qualitative and quantitative levels. Therefore, QP-DTW would potentially be more suitable for many applications related to time series (e.g., data mining, pattern recognition, search/retrieval, motif discovery, classification, etc.).

  • The English word-final /rl/ cluster poses a particular problem for Korean learners of English because it is the sequence of two sounds, /r/ and /l/, which are not contrastive in Korean. This study compared the similarity distances between English and Korean speakers' /rl/ productions using the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm. The words with /rl/ (pearl, world) and without /rl/ (bird, word) were recorded by four English speakers and four Korean speakers, and compared pairwise. The F2-F1 trajectories, the acoustic correlate of velarized /l/, and F3 trajectories, the acoustic correlate of /r/, were examined. Formant analysis showed that English speakers lowered F2-F1 values toward the end of a word, unlike Korean speakers, suggesting the absence of /l/ in Korean speakers. In contrast, there was no significant difference in F3 values. Mixed-effects regression analyses of the DTW distances revealed that Korean speakers produced /r/ similarly to English speakers but failed to produce the velarized /l/ in /rl/ clusters.

  • This paper discusses an effective processing of subsequence matching under time warping in time-series databases. Time warping is a trans-formation that enables finding of sequences with similar patterns even when they are of different lengths. Through a preliminary experiment, we first point out that the performance bottleneck of Naive-Scan, a basic method for processing of subsequence matching under time warping, is on the CPU processing step. Then, we propose a novel method that optimizes the CPU processing step of Naive-Scan. The proposed method maximizes the CPU performance by eliminating all the redundant calculations occurring in computing the time warping distance between the query sequence and data subsequences. We formally prove the proposed method does not incur false dismissals and also is the optimal one for processing Naive-Scan. Also, we discuss the we discuss to apply the proposed method to the post-processing step of LB-Scan and ST-Filter, the previous methods for processing of subsequence matching under time warping. Then, we quantitatively verify the performance improvement ef-fects obtained by the proposed method via extensive experiments. The result shows that the performance of all the three previous methods im-proves by employing the proposed method. Especially, Naive-Scan, which is known to show the worst performance, performs much better than LB-Scan as well as ST-Filter in all cases when it employs the proposed method for CPU processing. This result is so meaningful in that the performance inversion among Nive- Scan, LB-Scan, and ST-Filter has occurred by optimizing the CPU processing step, which is their perform-ance bottleneck.

  • This paper analysis the Dynamic Time Warping algorithms for time normalization of speech pattern and discusses the Dynamic Programming algorithm for spoken Korean isolated digits recognition. In the DP matching, feature vectors of the reference and test pattern are consisted of first three formant frequencies extracted by power spectrum density estimation algorithm of the ARMA model. The major differences in the various DTW algorithms include the global path constrains, the local continuity constraints on the path, and the distance weighting/normalization used to give the overall minimum distance. The performance criterias to evaluate these DP algorithms are memory requirement, speed of implementation, and recognition accuracy.

  • Due to the recent development of graphics hardware, real-time rendering of complex scenes is still a challenging task. As results of researches on image based rendering, the rendering schemes based on post-rendering 3D warping have been proposed. In general, these methods produce good rendering results. However, they are not appropriate for real-time rendering since it is not easy to accelerate the time-consuming algorithms within graphics subsystem. As an attempt to resolve this problem of the post-rendering 3D warping technique, we present a new real-time scheme based on projective texture. In our method, two reference images obtained by rendering complicated objects at two consecutive points of time are used. Rendering images of high quality for intermediate points of time are obtained by projecting the reference images onto a simplified object, and then blending the resulting images. Our technique will be effectively used in developing real-time graphics applications such as 3D games and virtual reality software and so on.
