  • In this study, the wave profiles and kinematics of highly nonlinear waves at various water depths were calculated using a 2D fully nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT). The NWT was developed based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM) with the potential theory and the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) time marching scheme by 4th-order Runge-Kutta time integration. The spatial variation of intermediate-depth waves along the direction of wave propagation was caused by the unintended generation of 2nd-order free waves, which were originally investigated both theoretically and experimentally by Goda (1998). These free waves were induced by the mismatch between the linear motion of wave maker and nonlinear displacement of water particles adjacent to the maker. When the 2nd-order wave maker motion was applied, the spatial modulation of the waves caused by the free waves was not observed. The respective magnitudes of the nonlinear wave components for various water depths were compared. It was found that the high-order wave components greatly increase as the water depth decreases. The wave kinematics at various locations were calculated and compared with the linear and the Stokes 2nd-order theories.

  • In this study, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis system has been developed in order to evaluate the turbine cascade performance with blade structural deformation effect. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling independent two computational domains. To consider the deformed position of rotor airfoil, dynamic moving grid method is applied. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models are solved to predict unsteady fluid dynamic loads. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method with high artificial damping is used to compute the fluid-structure interaction problem. Cascade performance evaluations for different elastic axis positions are presented and compared each other. It is importantly shown that the predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of blade can show some deviations compared to the data generally computed from rigid blade configurations and the position of elastic axis also tend to give sensitive effect.

  • Bragg reflection of nonlinear waves is simulated by a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The developed NWT was based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM) with potential theory and the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) time marching scheme with Runge-Kutta 4th-order time integration. A spatial variation of wave elevations and their Fourier amplitudes of each component are compared to investigate the effect of sea bottom ripples and their relative heights. The incident waves over an undulated sea bottom are partially reflected and changed to partial standing waves due to Bragg reflection. The present results are verified with linear calculations and experimental data. It is found that the 1st-order wave component is mainly affected by Bragg reflection and its spatial modulation is significant in front of the bottom ripples.

  • The flow field around a high-speed train including cross-wind effects has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the inertial frame using the iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives, 3th-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms and 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme for the viscous terms. The Marker-and-Cell concept was applied to efficiently solve continuity equation, which is differenced with 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A C-H type of elliptic grid system is generated around a high-speed train including ground. The Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model was implemented to simulate the turbulent flows. To validate the present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at constant yaw angle of $45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ has been simulated. The simulation shows 3-D vortex generation in the lee corner. The flow separation is also observed around the rear of the train. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

  • The flow field around a three dimensional minivan-like body has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives, and third/second-order scheme for the spatial derivatives. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. A H-H type of multi-block grid system is generated around a three dimensional minivan-like body. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the flows around the Ahmed body with 12.5° of slant angle are simulated. A good agreement with other numerical results is achived. After code validation, the flows around a mimivan-like body are simulated. The simulation shows three dimensional vortex-pair just behind body. The flow separation is also observed on the rear of the body. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agreed with physical flow phenomena.

  • The smoke filling process for the atrium space containing a fire source is simulated using two types of deterministic fire model : Zone model and Field model. The zone model used is the CFAST(version 1.6) model developed at the Building and Fire Research Laboratories, NIST in the USA. The field model is a self-developed frie field model based on Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) theories. This article is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution in atrium space which is cubic in shape. For solving the liked set of velocity and pressure equation, the PISO algorithm, which strengthened the velocity-pressure coupling, was used. Since PISO algorithm is a time-marching procedure, computing time si very fast. A computational procedure for predicting velocity and temperature distribution in fire-induced flow is based on the solution, in finite volume method and non-staggered grid system, of 3-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, species and so forth. The fire model i.e Zone model and Field model predicted similar results for clear heights and the smoke layer temperature.

  • In this study, nonlinear aeroelastic characteristics of an supersonic missile wing with strong shock interferences are investigated. The missile wing model has a freeplay structural nonlinearity at its pitch axis. To practically consider the effects of freeplay structural nonlinearity, the fictitious mass method is applied to structural vibration analysis based on finite element method. Nonlinear aerodynamic flows with unsteady shock waves are also considered in supersonic flow regions. To solve the nonlinear aeroelastic governing equations including the freeplay effect, a modal-based coupled time-marching technique based on the fictitious mass method is used in the time-domain. Various aeroelastic computations have been performed for the nonlinear wing structure model. Linear and nonlinear aeroelastic analyses have been conducted and compared with each other in supersonic flow regions. Typical nonlinear limit cycle oscillations and phase plots are presented to show the complex vibration phenomena with simultaneous fluid-structure nonlinearities.

  • This paper proposes an approach for staged finite element modeling with coupled seepage and stress analysis. The stage modeling is based on the predefined inter-relationship between the base model and the unit stage models. A unit stage constitutes a complete finite element model, of which the geometries and attributes are subject to changes from stage to stage. The seepage analysis precedes the mechanical stress analysis at every stage. Division of the wet and dry zone and the pore pressures are evaluated from the seepage analysis and used in determining input data for the stress analysis. The results of the stress analysis may also be associated with the pore water pressures. For consolidation analysis, the pore pressure and the displacement variables are mixed in a coupled matrix equation. The time marching solution produces the dissipation of excess pore pressure and variation of stresses with passage of time. For undrained analysis, the excess pore pressures are computed from the stress increment due to loading applied in the unit stage and are used in revising the hydraulic head. The solution results of a unit stage are inherited and accumulated to the subsequent stages through the relationship of the base model and the individual unit stages. Implementation of the proposed approach is outlined on the basis of the core procedures, and numerical examples are presented for demonstration of its application.
