  • This study was conducted to measure tea surface colors using the visible bands ($400{\sim}700$ nm) with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The surface colors of 117 tea products were measured with a colorimeter. The $a^*/b^*$ (CIE color scale) or a/b (Hunter color scale) ratios in different tea products accounted for about 99.7% of the variation in fermentation degree (FD), indicating that the $a^*/b^*$ (a/b) ratio is a very useful trait for assessing fermentation degree. Also tea powders were scanned in the visible bands used with NIRS. Calibration equations for surface colors and fermentation degree were developed using the regression method of modified partial least-squares (MPLS) with internal cross validation. The equations had low SECV (standard errors of cross-validation), and high $R^2$ (coefficient of determination in calibration) values with $0.779{\sim}0.999$, indicating that the whole bands ($400{\sim}2500\;nm$) with NIRS could be used to rapidly measure traits related to surface color, fermentation degree and other chemical components in tea products with high precision and ease at a time.

  • Atrial fibrillation(AF). chronic or paroxysmal is the most frequent arrhythmia in human subjects Duration of P wave in signal-averaged electrocardiography(SAECG) reflects intra-atrial conduction time and therefore. could be used as an electrophysiological marker for atrial conduction chance at the earthy stave. So we apply the analysis method using SAECG to diagnose Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation(PAF) . Subjects Participated for the study consisted of two groups: a control group(n=34) of normal healthy volunteers and a group of AF Patients(n=38) with a documented history of PAF but no other history of cardiac disease. We evaluated the effect of several filtering and determination methods to find the starting and ending feints of the P wavy on its duration. To increase the measurement reliability of P wave duration. the automatic detection method was proposed. Also. to increase the detection rate for PAF risk, the decision threshold value was optimized using receiver operation characteristics(ROC) curve. Results showed that the highest statistical difference (p〈0.001) of the P wane duration between controls and subjects was obtained at the Processing condition, using absolute threshold vague(8.75 $\mu N$) , a least mean square(LMS) high pass filter and 30 Hz cutoff frequency. The most outstanding difference(sensitivity 88 % specificity 64.4 %) between controls and subjects was obtained at the decision threshold value of 112 ms.

  • Compostable household wastes(mainly food wastes), after waste papers and cardboard being removed, were daily fed into small bins and mixed thoroughly while the air was supplied into the bin. Three small bins were employed: in case I, only recycled compost was composted, after being once fed at the beginning of composting, in case II, compostable household wastes(less than 50 mm) torn roughly by the hands with recycled compost, and in case III, compostable household wastes(less than 2 mm) ground by a kitchen mixer for vegetables with recycled compost. The straight-line was maintained between the wet or the dry residual mass of composting mixture versus composting time date(the coefficient of determination $R^2{\geq}0.98$ for the wet and $R^2{\geq}0.90$ for the dry). The decomposition rate of each composted material was estimated during composting. The total weight reduction rate after 30 days was 67.86% and 66.14% for case II and III, respectively. For case II, the daily weight reduction 6.82% and the daily decomposition rate 8.81% with the composting mixture, but the daily weight reduction rate was 56.43% and the daily decomposition rate 19.26% with only compostable household wastes. For case III, the daily reduction rate was 6.93% and the daily decomposition rate 7.70% with the composting mixture, but the daily weight reduction rate was 53.30% and the daily decomposition rate 22.95% with only compostable household wastes. The physicochemical characteristics of composting mixture did not show much difference between case II and III as was expected.

  • This study was undertaken to find the optimum condition for the Maillard browning reaction of tagatose and glycine model solution by applying the response surface methodology. Independent variables were pH (3, 5, 7), temperature (70, 85, $100^{\circ}C$), and time (60, 180, 300 min), while the dependent variables were absorbance, yellowness, color difference, and organoleptic score. The quadratic models with the cross-product proved to be suitable, due to the high coefficients of determination and the lack of fit results. Since all the dependent variables had saddle points, the optimal points were determined through ridge analysis. For absorbance, yellowness, and color difference, the optimal points were the lowest values; in contrast, the optimal point of organoleptic score was the highest value.

  • Because the estimated cost at early stage has great influence on decisions of project owner, the importance of early cost estimation is increasing. However, it depends on experience and knowledge of the estimator mainly due to shortage of information. Those tendency developed into case-based reasoning(CBR) method which solves new problems by adapting previous solution to similar past problems. The performance of CBR model is affected by attribute weight, so that its accurate determination is necessary. Previous research utilizes mathematical method or subjective judgement of estimator. In order to improve the problem of previous research, this suggests CBR schematic cost estimation method using genetic algorithm to determine attribute weight. The cost model employs nearest neighbor retrieval for selecting past case. And it estimates the cost of new cases based on cost information of extracted cases. As the result of validation for 17 testing cases, 3.57% of error rate is calculated. This rate is superior to accuracy rate proposed by AACE and the method to determine attribute weight using multiple regression analysis and feature counting. The CBR cost estimation method improve the accuracy by introducing genetic algorithm for attribute weight. Moreover, this makes user understand the problem-solving process easier than other artificial intelligence method, and find solution within short time through case retrieval algorithm.

  • In this study, we developed the trial product on 3D magnetic inversion tentatively named 'KMag3D'. Also, we briefly introduced its own function and graphic user interface on which especially focused through the development in the form of user manual. KMag3D is consisted of two fundamental frame for the 3D magnetic inversion. First, algebraic reconstruction technique was selected as a 3D inversion algorithm instead of least square method conventionally used in various magnetic inversion. By comparison, it was turned out that algebraic reconstruction algorithm was more effective and economic than that of least squares in aspect of both computation time and memory. Second, for the effective determination of the 3D initial and a-priori information model required in the execution of our algorithm, we proposed the practical technique based on the assemblage of 2D forward modeling and inversion results for individual user-selected 2D profiles. And in succession, initial and a-priori information model were constructed by appropriate interpolation along the strke direction. From this, we concluded that our technique is both suitable and very practical for the application of 3D magentic inversion problem.

  • The gas-phase S_N2$ reactions can be classified into neutral bimolecular, solvated, and ionic reactions; the neutral bimolecular reaction proceeds via retention mechanism whereas the ionic reaction produces inversion products. In the reaction of solvated nucleophile with one solvent molecule, a six-center transition state (TS) is formed and the two processes i.e., retention and inversion, are found to compete with a favored path depending on the electronic effect of the nucleophile and substituents in the substrate and on the steric requirement. In the ionic reaction, the difference in the energy barrier between the two processes reduces to a small value when the substrate methyl group is made bulky, leaving ability of the leaving group is improved and at the same time the negative charge of the nucleophile is dispersed. When the reaction center atom in the $S_N2$ reaction is changed to a larger sized second row elements, the activation barrier decreases since the steric crowding in the penta-coordinated TS is relieved. However within the same row, the barrier was found to increase as the atomic size decreased. For the boron, B, the barrier height was the least since in addition to the relatively large atomic size compared to C and N, it forms tetra-coordinated TS so that the steric crowding becomes nearly negligible.

  • This work is undertaken to determine alcohol homologues so-called fusel oil that may be present in the Korean folk sojues (distilled liquor) made from grains and to describe sample preparation and analytical method by GC-FID-MS. Solid phase extraction method for sample preparation by using porous styrene divinyl benzene polymer (Porapak Q) was compared with steam distillation and solvent extraction method. Retention behaviors of homologous series of alcohols were also studied. Log values of retention time, molecular weight, boiling point, and capacity factor of alcohols showed linear correlations to the carbon number of an alcohol, to the oven temperature, and to the dielectric constant. Components such as methyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol, isopentyl alcohol, and phenethyl alcohol have been identified. The more amount of isopentyl alcohol than other alcohols are contained in the Korean folk sojues, while that of n-propyl alcohol are contained in Chinese kaoliangchiew. Degree of similarity or dissimilarity and classification of the individual samples were discussed using multivariate statistical analysis(principal components analysis) based on GC data.

  • Quaternary basaltic rocks occur as volcanic plateau and/or river cliff in the watershed area of Hantan River in Jeongok, central Korea. We measured $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ ages for the basaltic rocks from Jeongok area using the multi-collector noble gas mass spectrometer and laser heating device introduced for the first time in Korea. The basaltic rocks from the river cliff in Eundae-ri area show the systematic change in $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ ages from $0.54{\pm}0.07Ma$ through $0.48{\pm}0.01Ma$ to $0.12{\pm}0.01Ma$ toward the top. The other sample from Jeongok-ri area yields the age of $0.43{\pm}0.04Ma$. This results suggest that there might be a episodic volcanic eruption between 0.12-0.54 Ma in Jeongok area.

  • To establish the protocol of a standardized exercise test for evaluating exercise intolerance and degree of fitness in Thoroughbred racehorses, we examined serum lactate concentrations related to exercise intensities using the high speed treadmill. Twelve clinically healthy Thoroughbred racehorses with or without previous training or racing history were assigned to two gorups, fit and unfit group, respectively. The protocol used for the standardized exercise test was consisted of two stages : stage of warm-up and that of acceleration. During the warm-up, the horses exercised 5 min at 1.8m/s and 3 min 3.4m/s without inclination. At the acceleration stage, exercise test was performed at 10% slope and the speed was increased from the initial 5m/s to the maximal speed which each tested horse could keep up with. The speed was increased with incremental steps of 1 m/s every minute. During the last 15 sec of each step, blood samples were collected for serum lactate determination. $V_{max}$(maximal treadmill speed which tested horses could keep up with) of the fit group ($10.93{\pm}0.33m/s$, mean${\pm}$SE, n = 6) was higher than that of the unfit group ($9.52{\pm}0.23m/s$, mean${\pm}$SE, n = 6). Serum lactate concentrations increased exponentially according to exercise intensities. $V_{La4}$(speed producing a serum lactate concentration of 4mmol/l) of the fit group, $6.45{\pm}0.26m/s$, was higher than that of the unfit group, $5.45{\pm}0.23m/s$. $La_{peak}$(peak plasma lactate concentration during the exercise test) was lower in the fit group ($20.34{\pm}1.62mmol/l$ at 1 min after maximal intensity exercise) than in the unfit group ($24.78{\pm}1.09mmol/l$ at 2 min after maximal exercise step). $t_{50%}$(time required for the recovery of lactate concentration to be one-half of $La_{peak}$ after maximal exercise) of the unfit group and the fit group were 40.0 and 18.0 min, respectively. Therefore, the protocol of the incremental standardized exercise test utilized in this study seems to be reliable for the assessment of fitness and exercise intolerance for the Thoroughbred racehorses.
