  • The magnetosphere is often perturbed by impulsive input such as interplanetary shocks and solar wind discontinuities. We study how these initial perturbations are propagating within the magnetosphere over various latitude regions by adopting a three-dimensional numerical dipole model. We examine the wave propagation on a meridional plane in a time-dependent manner and compare the numerical results with multi-satellite and ground observations. The dipole model is used to represent the plasmasphere and magnetosphere with a realistic Alfven speed profile. It is found that the effects of refraction, which result from magnetic field curvature and inhomogeneous Alfven speed, are' found to become important near the plasmapause. Our results show that, when the disturbances are assumed at the subsolar point of the dayside magnetosphere, the travel time becomes smaller to the polar ionosphere compared to the equatorial ionosphere.

  • The unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of an aerofoil gradually accelerating or decelerating at subsonic speeds are investigated through two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes simulations. An acceleration factor is defined to provide various acceleration or deceleration characters of the time-dependent flow over the aerofoil. The results show that an increase in the absolute value of the non-dimensional acceleration factor leads to a lesser change in the location and range of flow featues such as shockwave and boundary layer separation in a specific time range. Generally, the gradual speed-up and speed-down of the subsonic aerofoil results in different aerodynamic characteristics whose changes are more significant at angles of attack.

  • Mixers are used in various industrial fields where it is necessary to intimately mix two reactants in a short period of time. However, despite their widespread use, complex unsteady flow characteristics of industrial mixers are not systematic investigated. The present study aimed to clarify unsteady flow characteristics induced by various impellers in a tank. Impellers are pitched blade turbine and neo-hydrofoil turbine types. A high speed CCD camera and an Ar-Ion laser for illumination were adopted to clarify the time-dependent flow characteristics of the mixers. The rotating speed of impellers increased from 6Hz to 60Hz by 6Hz. The maximum velocity around PBT impeller is higher than the hydrofoil type impeller. These two types of turbine shows that typical flow characteristics of axial turbine and suitable for mixing high -viscosity materials.

  • PSC box bridges by MSS construction method in high-speed railway may not be cast in place at one step. Web and bottom flange(U member) in the cross section are cast in place at first, then top flange will be cast in place later with some time lag. In this section, stress distributions of U member and top flange are different with those in generally complete cast in place cross section. In the composite section composed of two different aged members, the redistribution of stresses takes place. This results from time-dependent strain characteristics of concrete and the effects of forces applied at the various stages. For comparison in the present paper, two models, one with the composite cross section and the other with generally complete cast in place cross section, are analyzed. The longitudinal stress differences of two models on considering construction stages are compared. As the analysis results show the considerable differences in the stresses of cross section between two models, the composition of cross section is considered for rational design of PSC box girder bridge.

  • This paper proposes a new position sensorless drive for brushless DC (BLDC) motors. Typical sensorless control methods such as the scheme with the back-EMF detection method show high performance only at a high speed range because the magnitude of the back-EMF is dependent upon the rotor speed. This paper presents a new solution that estimates the rotor position by using an unknown input observer over a full speed range. In the proposed method, a trapezoidal back-EMF is modelled as an unknown input and the proposed unknown input observer estimating a line-to-line back-EMF in real time makes it possible to detect the rotor position. In particular, this observer has high performance at a low speed range in that the information of a rotor position is calculated independently of the rotor speed without an additional circuit or complicated operation process. Simulations and experiments have been carried out for the verification of the proposed control scheme.

  • A two-layer incompressible time-accurate Euler solver is applied to analyze flow fields around a submerged body moving at a critical speed near a pycnocline. Discontinuities in the dependent variables across the material interface are captured without any dissipation or oscillation using the ghost fluid method on an unstructured grid. It is shown that the material interlace has significant effects on forces acting on a submerged body moving near a pycnocline regardless of the small difference in densities of two layers. Contrary to the shallow water waves, a submerged body can reach a critical speed at very low Froude number due to the small difference in the densities of the two layers.

  • Driving performance is characterized by many things such as driver's experience period, age, ability of information processing and reaction time of control devices and so forth. However, each factor of driving performance is needed to help and screen a poor driver for safe driving. In this paper, driving performance was estimated by reaction of manipulating brake, accelerator, steering wheel and speed. Subjects were grouped by experience of accident and age. Combinations of every group were analysed. For all the dependent variables, only steering wheel and speed were shown to have significant difference, which could be regarded as visual information of speed and direction were the important factors to drive safely. Especially for tile elderly, it is needed to enhance their ability of visual information processing that is to be decreased with aging. Therefore driving simulator to train and screen the poor driver should be studied.

  • The 3-dimensional unsteady compressible flows around the high speed train have been simulated for the train entering a tunnel and for passing another train. The simulation method employs the implicit approximation-factorization finite difference algorithm for the inviscid Euler equations in general curvilinear coordinates. A moving grid scheme is applied in order to resolve the train movement relative to the tunnel and the other train. The velo-city and pressure fields and pressure drag are calculated to study the effects of tunnel and the other train. The side directional force which is time dependent is also computed for the passing train. Pressure distribution shows that the compression wave is generated in front of the train noise just after the tunnel entrance and proceeds along the inside of tunnel.

  • In training a deep learning model, it is crucial to tune various hyperparameters and gain speed and accuracy. While hyperparameters that mathematically induce convergence impact training speed, system parameters that affect host-to-device transfer are also crucial. Therefore, it is important to properly tune and select parameters that influence the data loader as a system parameter in overall time acceleration. We propose an automated framework called Num Worker Tuner (NWT) to address this problem. This method finds the appropriate number of multi-processing subprocesses through the search space and accelerates the learning through the number of subprocesses. Furthermore, this method allows memory efficiency and speed-up by tuning the system-dependent parameter, the number of multi-process spawns.

  • Ultraprecision cutting of steels with geometrically defined single crystal diamond tools is handicapped by excessive tool wear. This paper presents a new approach to suppress the wear of single crystal diamond tool in cutting of steels. In general, it is said that the wear of diamond tool is caused by chemically reactive wear under high temperature and high pressure conditions. In order to suppress such chemical reactions, the time of contact between the diamond tool and the steel work in cutting was controlled by employing the intermittent cutting method such as fly-cutting. Series of intermittent cutting experiments have been carried out to control the tool-work contact time by changing one cycle of cutting length and cutting speed. The experimental results were shown that the tool wear was much dependent on the contact time regardless of the cutting speed, and that the wear was much suppressed by reducing the tool-work contact time. It is expected that the steels can be successfully cut with a single crystal diamond tool by controlling the contact time.
