  • Tilt sensor is required to control the attitude of the biped robot when it walks on an uneven terrain. Vision sensor, which is used for recognizing human or detecting obstacles, can be used as a tilt angle sensor by comparing current image and reference image. However, vision sensor alone has a lot of technological limitations to control biped robot such as low sampling frequency and estimation time delay. In order to verify limitations of vision sensor, experimental setup of an inverted pendulum, which represents pitch motion of the walking or running robot, is used and it is proved that only vision sensor cannot control an inverted pendulum mainly because of the time delay. In this paper, to overcome limitations of vision sensor, Kalman filter for the multi-rate sensor fusion algorithm is applied with low-quality gyro sensor. It solves limitations of the vision sensor as well as eliminates drift of gyro sensor. Through the experiment of an inverted pendulum control, it is found that the tilt estimation performance of fusion sensor is greatly improved enough to control the attitude of an inverted pendulum.

  • A new dynamic balancing algorithm has been proposed to minimize the number of sensors necessary for the horizontal balancing of the mobile inverted pendulum while maintaining the same level of the commercial performance. The inverted pendulum technique is getting attention and there have been many researches on the Segway since the US inventor Dean Kamen commercialized. One of the major problems of the Segway is that many sensors are required for the control of the Segway, which results in the high price. In this research, a single gyro and a tilt sensor are fused to obtain the absolute tilt information, which is applied for the control of the mobile inverted pendulum. A dynamic balancing technique has been developed and applied for a robust control system against disturbances. The intelligent handling and stable curving of the Segway as a next generation mobile tool are verified with a human loading.

  • Due to un-balancing weight allocation on the wheelchair the existing wheelchair system are faced with the risk of flipping or falling when a wheelchair goes up to a hill. In to order to be safer during riding the wheelchair, in this paper, we proposed a real-time new solution using the integrated Gyro Sensor and Tilt Sensor for controlling the balance. Because the typical property of wheelchair is for the special user who meets the difficulty in moving on foot the maintain the balance of wheel-chair systems have become important and helpful. In our method, we calculate the seat angle using information from Tilt Sensor. However, due to the law of inertia when a wheelchair is moving there is a deviation in the output value of Tilt Sensor. Therefore, we have to optimize the value of the angle by utilizing the acceleration that is the output of the Gyro Sensor. We took the advantages by using the combination of Gyro and Tilt sensors. Moreover, we also solved the consumption issue of the whole system. Through various experimentations with usage of ZigBee sensor module, the power consumption for the balancing system is reduced significantly.

  • In this paper, we propose a system for controlling the seat of the electric wheelchair depending on the slope of the terrain in real time by using the ATmega smart control based on the board. Smart control board includes a gyro sensor, an acceleration sensor and Tilt sensor, when the electric wheelchairs pass slope of the terrain, they use three sensors to identify terrain configuration in real time. We also applied the Complementary Filter in the gyro sensor and acceleration sensor, so the electric wheelchairs know the exact terrain by solving the interference during the movement. Based on this, the noise power wheelchair due to the movement will be reduced, the seat continues reliably movement without being vibration. In this paper, providing an application on the smart phone platform for the convenience of users who are not familiar with how to use electric wheelchairs, they can easily control wheelchairs. Control platform of the smart phone is able to monitor the electric wheelchair in real-time, with regard to pressure prevention, help the slope of the seat to be arbitrarily controlled.

  • In this paper, the automatic control system of the stroller brake was designed and manufactured to reduce the safety accident of the stroller. The ultrasonic sensors are used to determine whether the handle of the driver's hand is touching or not, and the gyro sensor is designed to detect the current tilt of the baby carriage. If the next driver's hand is not recognized and the tilt exceeds a certain angle, the servo motor is activated and the hydraulic brake is operated to prevent the accident on the downhill road. Finally, in this paper, a smart phone-based application was developed to make the remote control of the brake possible.

  • It is essential to find oscillating angles and periods in a seaway when designing and manufacturing stabilizers. It is difficult to find oscillating angles and periods in high speed turning and they vary with ship speed and wave heading angles, therefore, proper algorithm to measure oscillating periods in a seaway. In the present study, three kinds of algorithms are developed to measure oscillating angles periods in a seaway. Dual axis tilt sensor of low price is used to measure oscillating angles, and the effect of lateral accelerations on tilt sensor have been reduced by the fusion algorithm using the gyro sensor signals. Analog and digital filters are applied to minimize the noise of the signals. Three kinds of algorithms, zero crossing, peak to peak and moving zero crossing algorithm, are developed to measure oscillating periods in a seaway. It is found that the moving zero algorithm showed the best results in the sea trials.

  • In this paper, a new coarse alignment algorithm is proposed for roughly determining the initial attitude of the vehicle. The algorithm, referred as two-step coarse alignment algorithm, computes roll and pitch angle of the vehicle using accelerometer outputs, and then determines yaw angle with gyro outputs. With the geometric relation between sensor outputs and attitude angles, the algorithm error is analytically derived and compared with the previous coarse alignment algorithm that computes a transformation matrix using accelerometer md gyro outputs simultaneously. The simulation is also performed by varying the sensor errors. The results show that the proposed two-step coarse alignment algorithm has better performance for east tilt angle.

  • This paper presents the development and control of a two wheeled car-like mobile robot using balancing mechanism whose heading control is done by turning the handle. The mobile inverted pendulum is a combined system of a mobile robot and an inverted pendulum system. A sensor fusion technique of low cost sensors such as a gyro sensor and a tilt sensor to measure the balancing angle of the inverted pendulum robot system accurately is implemented. Experimental studies of the trajectory following control task has been conducted by command of steering wheel while balancing.
