  • Ni-Ti alloy has excellent corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, shape memory effect and superelasticity, so it has been used widely in biomedical fields. But it has difficulty in casting due to its high melting temperature and oxygen affinity at high temperature. Recently it has been attempted to cast Ni-Ti alloy using new casting machine and investment. The purpose of this study was to examine the superelastic behavior of cast shape memory Ni-Ti alloy and to compare the mechanical properties of the cast shape memory alloy with those of commercial alloys for removable partial denture framework. Ni-Ti alloy(Ni 50.25%, Ti 49.75% : atomic ratio) was cast with dental argon-arc pressure casting machine and Type IV gold alloy, Co-Cr alloy, Ni-Cr alloy, pure titanium were cast as reference. Experimental cast Ni-Ti alloy was treated with heat($500{\pm}2^{\circ}C$) in muffle furnace for 1 hour. Transformation temperature range of cast Ni-Ti alloy was measured with differential scanning calorimetry. The superelastic behavior and mechanical properties of cat Ni-Ti alloy were observed and evaluated by three point bending test, ultimate tensile test, Vickers microhardness test and scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Cast Ni-Ti alloy(Ni 50.25%, Ti 49.75% : atomic ratio) was found to have superelastic behavior. 2. Stiffness of cast Ni-Ti alloy was considerably lesser than that of commercial alloys for removable partial denture. 3. Permanent deformation was observed in commercial alloys for removable partial denture framework at three point bending test over proportional limit(1.5mm deflection), but was not nearly observed in cast Ni-Ti alloy. 4. On the mechanical properties of ultimate tensile strength, elongation and Vickers microhardness number, cast Ni-Ti alloy was similiar to Type IV gold alloy, Co-Cr alloy, Ni-Cr alloy and pure titanium. With these results, cast Ni-Ti alloy had superelastic behavior and low stiffness. Therefore, it is suggested that cast Ni-Ti alloy may be applicated to base metal alloy for removable partial denture framework.

  • Research into the replacement of injured systems and tissue in the human body is advancing rapidly. Recently, Ti-Ni shape memory alloys have shown excellent biofunctionality related to their shape memory effect and superelasticity. In this study, the effect of an acid or an alkali treatment on the bioactivity in 49Ti-Ni and 51.5Ti-48.5Ni alloys is investigated in an effort to utilize Ti-Ni alloy as a biomaterial. In addition, the biocompatibility in a SBF solution is assessed through in vitro testing. A porous surface was formed on the surface of both alloys after a chemical treatment. According to the in vitro test, apatite formed on the surfaces of both alloys. The forming rate of apatite in the Ti-rich alloy was faster that in the Ni-rich alloy. The formation of apatite provided proof of the bioactivity of the Ti-Ni alloy. A small quantity of Ni was eluted at the initial stage, whereas Ni was not found for 12 days in the Ti-rich alloy and for 8 days in the Ni-rich alloy. In the case of the treated 51.5Ti-Ni alloy, the shape memory property was worsened but the biocompatibility was improved.

  • In this study, surface analysis of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys with addition of Ti and Mo for dental CAD/CAM use has been researched experimentally. The surface characteristics of the alloys were examined by Vickers hardness test, bonding strength test, surface roughness test, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The shrinkage of the sintered Ni-Cr alloy alloy was slightly larger than that of Ni-Cr-Ti alloy, and larger than Co-Cr alloy. Also, the addition of Mo showed a tendency to decrease shrinkage somewhat. From the result of XRD analysis, NiCr, $Ni_3Cr$ and $Ni_3Ti$ were observed in the sintered Ni-13Cr-xTi and Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys. In addition, ${\sigma}-CrCo$, $Co_2Mo_3$ and $TiCo_2$ were formed in the sintered Co-Cr-xTi and Co-Cr-xMo alloys. Surface hardness of Ti and Mo added alloy was higher than those of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloy. The bond strength between sintered alloy and porcelain was $16.1kgf/mm^2$ for Ni-13Cr alloy, $17.8kgf/mm^2$ for Ni-13Cr-5Ti alloy, and $8.2kgf/mm^2$ for Ni-13Cr-10Ti alloy, respectively.

  • Ni-Ti shape memory alloy for dental nerve treatment devices was prepared by adding Mo to Ni-Ti alloy to improve flexibility and fatigue fracture characteristics and simultaneously increase corrosion resistance. Surface properties of the alloy were evaluated. Microstructure analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy revealed that the amount of needle-like structure increased with increasing Mo content. The shape of the precipitate showed a pattern in which a long needle-like structure gradually disappeared and changed into a small spherical shape. As a result of XRD analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy, R-phase structure appeared as Mo was added. R-phase and B2 structure were mainly observed. As a result of DSC analysis, phase transformation of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy showed a two-step phase change of B2-R-B19' transformation with two exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak. As Mo content increased, R-phase formation temperature gradually decreased. As a result of measuring surface hardness of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy, change in hardness value due to the phase change tended to decrease with increasing Mo content. As a result of the corrosion test, the corrosion potential and pitting potential increased while the current density tended to decrease with increasing Mo content.

  • The anodic polarization behavior of equiatomic TiNi shape memory alloy with pure titanium as a reference material was investigated by means of open circuit potential measurement and potentiodynamic polarization technique. And the structure of passive films on TiNi intermetallic compounds was also conducted using AES and ESCA. While the dissolved Ni(II) ion did not affect the dissolution rate and passivation of TiNi alloy, the dissolved Ti(III) ion was oxidated to Ti(IV) ion on passivated TiNi surface at passivation potential. It has also been found that the Ti(IV) ion increases the steady state potential, and passivates TiNi alloy at a limited concentration of Ti(IV) ion. The analysis by AES showed that passive film of TiNi alloy was composed of titanium oxide and nickel oxide, and the content of titanium was three times higher than that of nickel in outer side of passive film. According to the ESCA analysis, the passive film was composed of $TiO_2$ and NiO. It seems reasonable to suppose that NiO could act as unstabilizer to the oxide film and could be dissolved preferentially. Therefore, nickel oxide contained in the passive film may promote the dissolution of the film, and it could be explained the reason of higher pitting susceptibility of TiNi alloy than pure Ti.

  • Ti-50Ni(at%) and Ti-40Ni-10Cu(at%) alloy powders have been fabricated by ball milling method, and their microstructure and phase transformation behavior were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffractions and transmission electron microscopy. In order to investigate the effect of ball milling conditions on transformation behavior, ball milling speed and time were varied. Ti-50Ni alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed more than 250 rpm were amorphous, while those done with the milling speed of 100rpm were crystalline. In contrast to Ti-50Ni alloy powders, Ti-40Ni-10Cu alloy powders were crystalline, irrespective of ball milling conditions. DSC peaks corresponding to martensitic transformation were almost discernable in alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed more than 250 rpm, while those were seen clearly in alloy powders fabricated with the milling speed of 100 rpm. This was attributed to the fact that a strain energy introduced during ball milling suppressed martensitic transformation.

  • In this study, porcelain bonding strength and mechanical properties of sintered Ni-Cr-Ti alloy for dental prosthodontics have been researched experimentally. Mechanical and morphological characteristics of the alloys were examined by Vickers hardness test, tensile and bonding strength test, surface roughness test, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In the sintered Ni-13Cr-xTi alloys, morphology of sintered alloy showed porous matrix diffused with alloying elements of Cr and Ti, and showed dendritic structure after melting process. From the XRD results, the second phases of NiCr, $Ni_3Cr$, and $Ni_3Ti$ were formed in the case of sintered and melted Ni-13Cr-xTi alloys. The tensile strength and hardness of Ni-13Cr-xTi alloys increased, as Ti content increased. Surface roughness increased, as Ti content increased. The bonding strength between metal and porcelain of Ni-13Cr-5Ti alloy was higher than those of Ni-13Cr and Ni-13Cr-10Ti alloys

  • In this paper, single fiber pull-out test is used to measure the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite with temperature. Fiber and matrix of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite are respectively $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy and epoxy resin. To strengthen the interfacial bonding shear stress, various surface treatments are used. They are the hand-sanded surface treatment, the acid etched surface treatment and the silane coupled surface treatment etc.. The interfacial bonding shear strength of surface treated shape memory alloy fiber is greater than that of surface untreated shape memory alloy fiber by from 10% to 16%. It is assured that the hand-sanded surface treatment and the acid etched surface treatment are the best way to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory composite. The best treatment condition of surface is 10% HNO$_3$ solution in the etching method to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite.

  • TiNi alloys have excellent shape memory properties and corrosion resistance as well as high biocompatibility. This study investigated the effects of copper addition on the phase transitions and electrochemical corrosion behaviors of Ti50Ni50-xCux alloys. TiNi, Ti50Ni47Cu3, Ti50Ni44Cu6, and Ti50Ni41Cu9 alloys were prepared using vacuum arc remelting followed by 4 h homogenization at 950℃. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analyses were conducted. The corrosion behaviors of the alloys were evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization test in Hank's balanced salt solution at a temperature of 36.5 ± 1℃. The TiNi alloy showed phase transitions from the cubic B2 phase to the monoclinic B19' phase when the alloy was thermally cycled. The addition of copper to the TiNi alloy played a major role in stabilizing the orthorhombic B19 phases during the phase transitions of Ti50Ni50-xCux alloys. The shifts in the corrosion potential toward the positive zone and the low corrosion current density were affected by the amount of Cu added. The corrosion resistance of the TiNi alloy increased with increasing copper content.

  • Microstructure and phase transformation of Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders produced by using attrition milling method were studied. Mixed powders of Ti-(50-X)Ni-XCu ($X=0{\sim}20$ at%) in composition range were mechanically alloyed for maximum 20 hours by using SUS 1/4" ball in argon atmosphere. Ball to powder ratio was 50: 1 and impeller speed was 350rpm. Mechanically alloyed with attrition millimg method. powder was heat treated at the temperature up to $850^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in the $10^{-6}$ torr vacuum. Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders have been fabricated by attrition milling method. and then phase transformation behaviours and microstructual properties of the alloy powders were investigated to assist in improving the the high damping capacity of Ti-Ni-Cu shape memory alloy powders. The results obtained are as follows: 1. After heat treating of fully mechanically alloyed powder at $850^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. most of the B2 and B 19' phases was formed and $TiNi_3$ were coexisted. 2. The B 19' martensite were formed in Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders whose Cu-content is less than 5a/o. where as the B19 martensite in those whose Cu-content is more than 10at%. 3. The powders of as-milled Ti-Ni-Cu alloys whose Cu-contents is less than 5at% are amorphous. whereas those of as-milled Ti-Ni-Cu alloys whose Cu-content is more than 10at% are crystalline. This means that Cu addition tends to suppress amorphization of Ti-Ni alloy powders.
