Quantitative Investigation of Grain Growth in Carbide Added(Mo$_2$C, ZrC and WC) to TiC-Ni Matrix Cermets

  • The growth of solid particles in TiC-XC-2vo1.% and TiC-XC-30vo1.% Ni alloys, (where X=Zr, W or Mo) was fitted to the equation of the form $d^3$-${do}^3$=Kt during the liquid phase sintering at 1,673K. Also, the grain growth behavior decreased markedly with the addition of ${MO}_2$C or WC and increased with the addition of zrC. The contiguity was greater in the alloys with a smaller growth rate constant and especially, decreased by increasing the Ni content in the TiC-${MO}_2$C-Ni alloy. In addition, the effect of the addition of carbide on the grain growth of 2 vo1.% Ni alloys was found to be similar to that of 30vo1.% Ni alloys. Consequently, the grain growth mechanism cannot be explained by the usual solution / reprecipitation process, but can be explained in terms of a new growth velocity equation, which includes the effects of contiguous carbide grain boundaries in restricting the overall grain growth, as well as the area of the solid / liquid interface in the alloy.

Physical properties of $PbZrO_3-PbTiO_3-Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ thin films by sol-gel method (Sol-gel법에 의한 $PbZrO_3-PbTiO_3-Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$박막의 물리적 특성)

  • PbTiO$_{3}$-PbZrO$_{3}$-Pb(Ni$_{1}$3/Nb$_{2}$3/O$_{3}$) (PZT-PNN) thin films were prepared from corresponding metal organics partially stabilized with diethanolamine by the sol-gel spin coating method. Each mol ratio of PT:PZ:PNN solutions were #1(50:40:10), #2(50:30:20), #3(45:35:20), #4(40:40:20), #5(40:50:10), #6(35:45:20) and #7(30:50:20) respectively. The spin-coated PZT-PNN films were heat-treated at 350.deg. C for decomposition of residual organics, and were sintered from 450.deg. C to 750.deg. C for crystallization. The substrates, such as Pt and Pt/TiN/Ti/TiN/Si were used for the spin coating of PZT PNN films. The perovskite phase was observed in the PZT-PNN films heat-treated at 500.deg. C. The crystalline of the PZT-PNN films was optimized at the sintering of 700.deg. C. By the result of AES analysis, It is confirmed that the films of TiN/Ti/TiN was a good diffusion barrier and that co-diffusion into the each films was not observed.

  • Dielectric properties at microwave frequencies of ($Zr_{0.65}$, $Sn_{0.35}$) $Ti_{1.04}$ $O_{4.04}$ ceramics with additives, NiO as an agent to improve dielectric properties and $B_{2}$ $O_{3}$ as a firing agent were investigated. When 0.5 - 1.5 wt% of NiO is add, the grain growth is inhibited and the shape of the grain is uniformed, Dielectric constant(Fr) and bulk density are increased with raising amount of NiO at sintering temperature of 1330 - 1360.deg. C, but the temperature coefficient of resonant frquency(.epsilon.$_{r}$) decreased gradually as the NiO content increased. The value of Qx $f_{o}$ was increased as the amount of NiO was increased in the range of 0.5 to 1.0 wt% and the Qx $f_{o}$, was decreased slightly with raising sintering temperature. With NiO of 1.0 wt% and at sintering temperature of 1360.deg. C, this ceramics was found to have excellent microwave properties of .epsilon.$_{r}$=37.8, Qx $f_{o}$ = 48.600 and .tau.$_{f}$ = 7 ppm/.deg. C.C.. C.. C.C.. C.. C.

Phase Transformation of Ti-Ni-Zr Icosahedral Phase and Fabrication of Porous Ti and W Compacts using Electro-Discharge Sintering (전기방전소결을 이용한 Ti-Ni-Zr 준 결정상의 상변화 연구와 Ti, W 다공체 제작)

  • Electro-Discharge Sintering (EDS) employs a high-voltage/high-current-density pulse of electrical energy, discharged from a capacitor bank, to instantaneously consolidate powders. In the present study, a single pulse of 0.57-1.1 kJ/0.45 g-atomized spherical $Ti_{52}Zr_{28}Ni_{20}$ powders in size range of 10~30 and $30\sim50{\mu}m$ consisting of ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) and icosahedral phases were applied to examine the structural evolution of icosahedral phase during EDS. Structural investigation reveals that high electrical input energy facilitates complete decomposition of icosahedral phase into C14 laves and ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) phases. Moreover, critical input energy inducing decomposition of the icosahedral phase during EDS depends on the size of the powder. Porous Ti and W compacts have been fabricated by EDS using rectangular and spherical powders upon various input energy at a constant capacitance of $450{\mu}F$ in order to verify influence of powder shape on microstructure of porous compacts. Besides, generated heat (${\Delta}H$) during EDS, which is measured by an oscilloscope, is closely correlated with powder size.

  • Effects of MnO2 addition on themicrostructure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Rhombohedral, Tetragonal and Morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) in Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3-PbZrO3 system were investigated and respectively the amount of MnO2 addition was 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0wt%. In the tetragonal region, compared with the Rhombohedral and Morpotropic phase boundary, Mechanical quality factor(Qm), Curie temperature(Tc) and Dissipation factor were promoted by addition of MnO2. According to the results of the microstructure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties, the solid solution range of MnO2 addition in this system was 0.2-0.5wt%.

  • The dielectric and piezoelectric properties with compositions in Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3-PbZrO3-(PNN-PT-PZ)solid solution ceramics were investigated. In this study, the compsition ranges were 30 PNN 45mole%, 20 PT 50mole% and 50 PZ5mole%. As PT fraction were increased the grain size was increased and the fired density was decreased, but the changes of PNN fraction had no effect on the grain size. The Curie temperature was increased when PT and PNN fraction were increased. The displacement was increased but had a great hysteresis loss when PT fraction was increased. In morphotropic phase boundary, the maximum piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling factor were indicated. Morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) was 34 PT 36mole% in chang of compositions.

  • In order to, simultaneously, synthesize and control the size of microstructure of amorphous/crystalline composites, a repeated extrusion process was performed using the gas atomized $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ metallic glass powders and the crystalline brasses. The size of microstructure in the resultant composites was varied depending on the pass of extrusion as well as on the area reduction ratio. The microstructure could be estimated using an equation of $r_n=r_{n-1}/R^{1/2}$, where R is reduction ratio and $r_n$ is the resultant radius of the extruded bar after n pass. Theory of microstructural refinement as well as the relationship between the resultant microstructures and mechanical properties was discussed.

  • Effect of PbO addition on sintering and piezoelectric properties at 0.45Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.40PbTiO3-0.15PbZrO3 composition which is tetragonal phase was investigated. In this composition, Porosity and dielectric constant were increased with excess PbO addition, but Kp and d31 was not changed. These variation of physical properties could be interpreted as composition change of solid grains from tetragonal to MPB region due to amount of PbO-rich liquid changing.

  • The effects of NiO addition on the microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of ($Zr_{08}Sn_{02}$)$TiO_4$ (ZST) were investigated. With the NiO addition, a higher density of ZST ceramics than 95% of the theoretical values has been obtained in the sintering temperature range of 1400 to 150$0^{\circ}C$. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) analysis of sintered specimen shows the presence of second phase at grain boundaries, which is considered to be $NiTiO_3$. Dielectric constant of the specimen is found to increase linearly with density. Q-values and TC$_r$ decrease with increasing NiO content. The variation of dielectric properties with NiO content is discussed in terms of the second phase. The ZST ceramics with 0.25 wt% NiO showed ${\varepsilon}_{\gamma}$=38, Q=7000 at GHz and TC$\gamma$=-0.5 ppm/$^{\circ}C$, comparable with the values obtained by the previous investigations.
