  • The effects of Ag addition to Zr-based hydrogen storage alloys ($Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$, $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$ and $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Fe_{0.1}$) on the electrode properties were examined. Ag-free and Ag-added Ze-based alloys were prepared by arc melting, crushed mechanically, and subjected to the electrochemical measurement. In $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy, 0.08 wt% Ag addition to the alloy improved the activation rate. Also Ag addition improved both activation property and discharge capacity in $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$. For these Ag-added alloys, discharge capacities with the change of charge-discharge current density(10mA, 15mA and 30mA) are almost constant. Showing very high rate capability, discharge capacity of $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Fe_{0.1}$ alloy increased by Ag addition to the alloy. When the amount of Ag addition in $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy increased too much, the electrode properties became worse. Unveiling mechanism of effect of Ag addition is now progressing in our laboratory.

  • The activation temperatures and hydrogen sorption rates of $Ti_{80-X}Zr_{20}V_X$ alloys were evaluated at room temperature. The alloy powders were prepared by arc melting and then hydride-dehydride(HDH) process. The alloy powders were apt to activate by increase of vanadium in Ti-Zr-V alloys. The easy activation was explained in terms of surface oxygen content which decreased with increase of vanadium on Ti-Zr-V alloys.

  • To develop high capacity hydrogen storage alloys for secondary Ni/MH batteries, electrochemical charge/discharge characteristics of $Zr_{1-x}Ti_xMn_{1-y}V_yNi_{1-z}M_z$ (M=Al,Co,Fe) alloys were investigated, in which $0.2{\leq}x{\leq}0.6$, $0.2{\leq}y{\leq}0.8$, $0.2{\leq}z{\leq}0.4$. With increasing Ti content(x) and/or decreasing V content(y), lattice constants and maximum theoretical capacities of the alloys were decreased and equilibrium pressure of hydrogen absorption were increased. Electrochemical discharge capacities were increased with increasing Ti content(x). Especially, the alloys of x= 0.4~0.6 showed better charge/discharge efficiencies than those of x<0.4. Discharge capacities of $Zr_{0.4}Ti_{0.6}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}$, $Zr_{0.4}Ti_{0.6}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.8}Al_{0.2}$ and $Zr_{0.5}Ti_{0.5}Mn_{0.4}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.6}Co_{0.4}$ were 385, 328 and 333mAh/g, respectively. These alloys were fully activated within five charge/discharge cycles and had a good charge and discharge rate capabilities and temperature characteristics.

  • For biomedical applications, Ti-X%Zr-Y%Nb-0.2%Pd(X:10$\sim$20, Y:2$\sim$8) alloys not containing harmful Al and V were newly designed, and the effect of alloy composition and heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. From the results, it was shown that the mechanical properties were enhanced with the addition of Zr or Nb. The effect of heat treating on room temperature strength was investigated by aging treatment after solution treatment. The mechanical properties of Ti-20%Zr-4%Nb-0.2%Pd alloy aged at 400$^{\circ}C$ for 10hrs was found to be superior to those of the pure Ti and Ti-6%Al-4%V ELI alloy.

  • The mechanical properties of Ti-Al intermetallic compounds which contain Mn, Zr, or Cr as the third element have been evaluated by means of hardness and compression tests. Microstructures have also been examined using an optical microscope. The cast structures of Ti-Al alloys are coarsened and the lamellar volume fraction is increased by the additions of Mn or V, but the cast structures are refined by the addition of Zr. Hardness tests of room temperature and compression tests at $600^{\circ}C$ showed that the mechanical properties of Ti-Al alloys were mainly dependent on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase, grain size and solid solution hardening. However according to the compression test at $1000^{\circ}C$, the yield strength of Ti-Al alloys decreased with an increase in Mn or Cr content, but increased with an increase in the Zr content.

  • Alloys of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al(wt%) were oxidized in air between 700 and $900^{\circ}C$. It was found that the oxidation resistance is much better than that of either commercially available pure Ti-6Al-4V(wt%) alloys. The oxide scales were primarily composed of thick Ti-ox-ides which were formed by the inward diffusion of oxygen from the atmosphere. At higher temperatures a thin $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ layer was formed on Ti-oxides owing to the outward diffusion of Al from the base alloys. Molybdenum, the noblest metal among the alloy components, was predominantly present behind the oxide-substrate interface. Zirconium, an oxygen active metal, was present at both the oxide layer and the substrate.

  • For the long term storage safety study of the metallic spent fuel, U-Nb, U-Ti, U-Ni, U-Zr, and U-Hf simulated metallic uranium alloys, known as corrosion resistant alloys, were fabricated and oxidized in oxygen gas at $200^{\circ}C~300^{\circ}C$. Simulated metallic uranium alloys were more corrosion resistant than pure uranium metal, and corrosion resistance increases Nb, Ni, Ti in that order. The oxidation rates of uranium alloys determined and activation energy was calculated for each alloy. The matrix microstructure of the test specimens were analyzed using OM, SEM, and EPMA. It was concluded that Nb was the best acceptable alloying elements for reducing corrosion of uranium meta] considered to suitable as candidate.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop new V-free Ti alloys which have good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Although pure Ti has an excellent biocompatibility and corrosion resistance in body, it is inferior to Ti alloys in mechanical properties, and Ti-6Al-4V which has good mechanical properties was known to be cytotoxic due to the alloying element V. New Ti based alloys which do not contain the toxic metallic components were developed by the alloy design technique. Their corrosion and mechanical characteristics were compared with pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V in this study. The results showed that Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd-1In and Ti-5AI-4Zr-2.5Mo exhibit good mechanical oroperties and an excellent corrosion resistance in 0.9% NaCl solution.

  • The new Cu-Zr-Ti-Ni-Pd amorphous alloy system has been introduced and manufactured using melt-spinning and Cu-mold die casting methods. Amorphous formability, the supercooled liquid region before crystallization and mechanical properties of the alloys were examined. The reduced glass transition temperature(Trg = Tg/Tm) and the supercooled liquid region(${\Delta}$Tx = Tx-Tg) of $Cu_{49}Zr_{30}Ti_{10}Ni_5Pb_6$ alloy were 0.620 and 57 K respectively. $Cu_{49}Zr_{30}Ti_{10}Ni_5Pb_6$ amorphous alloy was produced in the rod shape with 2mm diameter using the Cu-mold die casting. The hardness value of the amorphous bulk alloy was 432 DPN.
