Design of $Ti:LiNbO_3$ Three-Waveguide Optical Switch with Center-Waveguide Fed (가운데 도파로 입사된 $Ti:LiNbO_3$ 세 도파로 광스위치의 설계 및 제작)

  • An optical switch composed of identical, equally-spaced $Ti:LiNbO_3$ three-waveguides was designed and fabricated. Patterned Ti was diffused into z-cut $LiNbO_3$ substrates. $SiO_2$ buffer layer was evaporated to reduce the propagation loss of TM mode, and Al electrodes of CPW structure were built on the layer for switching of the guided beam. The optical switching phenomenon was confirmed when a beam of ${\lambda}=1.3{\mu}m$ was launched into the center waveguide and an electric field was applied to detune the three waveguides symmetrically.

Preparations of z-cut LiNbO$_3$ Optical Waveguide for High Refractive Index Change and Properties of Insertion Loss as a Function of Ti Thickness (高 굴절율화된 z-cut LiNbO$_3$ 광도파로 제작 및 Ti 두께에 따른 삽입손실특성)

  • In this paper, we proposed a diffuion model of Ti diffused lithium niobate optical waveguide for fabricating waveguides with high refractive index and compared with conventional one. The achivement of low optical insertion loss between waveguide interface and single mode fibers was discussed as a function of Ti thickness for $\lambda$=1.55$\mu\textrm{m}$ The proposed diffusion method exhibited higher refractive index waveguide than conventional one for $\lambda$=0.6328$\mu\textrm{m}$ We have achieved the total fiber-waveguide-fiber insertion loss as low as 0.5dB/cm in z-cut and 1$\pm$0.5dB/cm in x-cut for both TM and TE mode of Mach-Zehnder interferometric waveguide in the range of Ti thickness 1000-1400$\AA$ for $\lambda$=1.55$\mu\textrm{m}$ From these results, this diffusion model for making a low loss waveguide can be used for low-power-modulators and switches.

  • Deposited film of a transition metal, Ti was diffused into LiNbO3 crystals to form integrated optical waveguides. By suppressing L O out -diffusion, single-mode waveguides could be constructed. Measurements on characteristics were performed by using the prise coupling technique and a He-Ne laser. ( λ = 0.6328 $\mu$m)

  • Fabrication and pakaging method for low delve voltage and 10Gbps Ti diffused waveguide LiNbO$_3$ optical intensity modulator are described. Optical waveguides were prepared by conventionaly electron-beam evaporation and Ti-indiffusion into Z-cut plate LiNbO$_3$. Traveling-wave electrodes were used for obtaining the wideband frequency response and impedance matching. Microwave effective index and characteristic impedance measured by time domain reflectometry and compared with the calculated value by conformal mapping. The characteristics of 10Gbps modulator at the 1550nm wavelength are as follows : perfect modulation voltage Is about 5V, optical insertion loss Is about 5dB, 3-dB bandwidth is 10GHz, and characteristic impedance is about 50$\Omega$.

Electro-optic Electric Field Sensor Utilizing Ti:LiNbO3 Symmetric Mach-Zehnder Interferometers

  • The use of a $Ti:LiNbO_3$ symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometric intensity modulator with a push-pull lumped electrode and a plate-type probe antenna to measure an electric field strength is described. The modulator has a small device size of $46{\times}7{\times}1mm$ and operates at a wavelength of $1.3{\mu}m$. The output characteristic of the interferometer shows the modulation depth of 100% and 75%, and $V_{\pi}$ voltage of 6.6 V, and 6.6 V at the 200 Hz and 1 KHz, respectively. The minimum detectable electric field is ~1.84 V/m, ~3.28 V/m, and ~11.6 V/m, corresponding to a dynamic range of about ~22 dB, ~17 dB, and ~6 dB at frequencies of 500 KHz, 1 MHz and 5 MHz, respectively.

  • An optical switch composed of three-identical, equally-spaced $Ti:LinbO_3$ waveguides and overlaid Al electrodes of CPW structure was designed and fabricated. Patterned Ti was diffused into z-cut $LinbO_3$ substrates at $1025^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours to make a three-waveguide directional coupler. $SiO_2$ buffer layer of $1.2{\mu}m$ was grown by the PECVD to reduce the propagation loss of TM mode, and Al electrodes were built on the layer for switching the guided beam. For an incident beam of ${\lambda}=1.3{\mu}m$, almost perfect optical coupling between two outer waveguides was observed. When an electric field was applied to detune the three waveguides anti-symmetrically, the optical switching phenomenon was successfully confirmed.

  • We demonstrated $\check{S}$olc-type wavelength filters in periodically poled Ti-diffused lithium-niobate channel optical waveguide (Ti:PPLN). A $\check{S}$olc-type transmission spectrum based on the polarization-mode conversion was observed experimentally in PPLN with period 16.6${\mu}m$. A reasonable explanation of such a phenomenon was presented. A polarization-mode converted transmission peak was observed at wavelength 1272.49nm. The FWHM and sidelobe of spectrum are about 0.23nm and 7 dB, respectively.

  • The characteristics of a ferroelectric-domain inverted grating fabricated by applying a high-voltage pulse at room temperature in Ti-diffused channel waveguides in z-cut $LiNbO_3$ (Ti:PPLN) were examined for channel waveguide quasi phase-matched secondharmonic generation devices. The fabrication conditions of uniform periodic domain-inversion were examined. Ti:PPLN with period ${\Lambda}=16.6{\mu}m$ for SHG were fabricated and the performances were measured. A normalized SHG efficiency as high as 473 (%/W) was obtained with 49 mm interaction length.

  • Switching phenomenon of a three-waveguide optical coupler was analyzed by using the coupled mode theory, and the coupling-length of the device was calculated by means of the FDM. CPW traveling-wave electrodes were designed by the CMM and SOR simulation techniques so as to satisfy the conditions of phase-velocity and impedance matching. Traveling-wave modulators were fabricated on a z-cut LiNbO$_3$ substrate. Ti was in-diffused in LiNbO$_3$ to make waveguides and Au electrodes were built on the waveguides by the electroplating technique. Insertion loss and switching voltage of the optical modulator were about 4 ㏈ and 15.6V. Network analyzer was used to obtain S parameters and corresponding RF response. From the measurement, parameters of the traveling-wave electrodes were extracted as such Z$_{c}$=39.2 $\Omega$, Neff=2.48, and a0=0.0665/cm((GHz) (1/2)). The measured optical response R(w) was compared with the theoretically estimated and both responses were shown to agree well. The measurement results revealed that the ㏈ bandwidth turned out to be about 13 GHz.

  • The performance evaluation and fabrication of integrated-optic electric-field sensor utilizing $Ti:LiNbO_3$ asymmetric Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator with a push-pull lumped electrode and a plate-type probe antenna to measure an electric field strength is described. The modulator has a small device size of $46{\times}7{\times}1\;mm$ and operates at a wavelength $1.3{\mu}m$. The devices are simulated based on the BPM software and fabricated utilizing Ti-diffused $LiNbO_3$ channel optical waveguides. The minimum detectable electric field is 1.02 V/m and 6.91 V/m, corresponding to a dynamic range of ~35 dB and ~10 dB at the frequencies of 500 KHz and 5 MHz, respectively.
