Development of Metal Compound Explosives Using KIO4 and TiH2 (KIO4와 TiH2를 이용한 금속복합화약 개발)

  • THPP is a type of metallic complex explosive used in initiators, consisting of TiH2 and KClO4. In this case KClO4 includes ClO4- which is a harmful substance that may cause thyroid dysfunction or tumors. In this study KIO4 is applied to a new type of environmentally friendly explosive as a substitute to the conventional KClO4. Tests were carried out to see if KIO4 can be made a successful replacement for KClO4.

Spinal Epidural Lipomatosis Secondary to Hypothyroidism in a Siberian Husky Dog

  • A 10-year-old neutered male Siberian Husky presented with paraparesis and severe lethargy. On physical examination, the patient was unable to weight-bear and walk and exhibited significant muscle mass loss in both hindlimbs and generalized truncal alopecia with a dull coat of hair. On neurological examination, cranial lumbar vertebral pain, hind limb cross-extensor reflex, delayed hindlimb postural reaction, upper motor neuron bladder dysfunction, and total absence of cutaneous trunci reflex were identified. Computed tomography revealed diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and spondylosis deformans of the cervical and thoracolumbar vertebrae. In addition, a generalized decrease in bone mineral density of the vertebrae was identified. Magnetic resonance imaging showed hyperplasia of the epidural fat compressing the spinal cord in the thoracolumbar region and concurrent mild multiple intervertebral disc herniations. No specific findings were observed in cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Blood analysis of thyroid function revealed decreased total T4 and free T4 levels, and increased TSH levels. The patient was tentatively diagnosed with spinal epidural lipomatosis (SEL) secondary to hypothyroidism. The patient was treated with levothyroxine, firocoxib, and gabapentin. Clinical signs gradually improved, and the patient showed normal ambulation 40 days after treatment initiation. SEL is extremely rare in dogs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of SEL secondary to hypothyroidism that was treated conservatively. Secondary SEL can be sufficiently managed by treating the underlying cause, if possible.

Idiopathic Vestibular Disease in a Beagle Dog: Clinical Findings and Outcome (비글 견에서 발생한 특발성 전정계 질병 증례: 임상적 발견과 결과)

  • A 10-year-old, intact female Beagle dog was presented for examination of acute onset of right-sided head tilt and moderate ataxia. Clinical signs were acutely presented 12 days ago and had been progressively alleviated until the admission day. The dog was bright, alert, and responsive. On neurological examinations, mild head tilt to the right and mild ataxia were noted, thus vestibular disorders were suspected. Central vestibular disease was ruled out based on the clinical signs, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) analysis. Otoscopic examination showed that the tympanic membranes were intact and normal in appearance. On radiographic and MR examinations, abnormalities were not found in the tympanic bulla and the petrous portion of the temporal bone. Hypothyroidism was ruled out by thyroid-stimulation hormone(TSH) stimulation test. Clinical signs were completely disappeared at 2 weeks after discharge without any therapy. Thus, the dog was definitively diagnosed as idiopathic vestibular disease based on the clinical signs, excluding other causes of vestibular dysfunction, and the alleviation of clinical signs with time.

Association between Global Cortical Atrophy, Medial Temporal Atrophy, White Matter Hyperintensities and Cognitive Functions in Korean Alzheimer's Disease Patients (알츠하이머병 환자의 전반적 피질 위축, 내측두엽 위축, 백질 고강도 신호와 인지기능의 연관성)

  • Objectives The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between degenerative changes in brain [i.e., global cortical atrophy (GCA), medial temporal atrophy (MTA), white matter hyperintensities (WMH)] and neurocognitive dysfunction in Korean patients with Alzheimer's disease. Methods A total of 62 elderly subjects diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease were included in this study. The degenerative changes in brain MRI were rated with standardized visual rating scales (GCA or global cortical atrophy, MTA or medial temporal atrophy, and Fazekas scales) and the subjects were divided into two groups according to the degree of degeneration for each scale. Cognitive function was evaluated with Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-K) and several clinical features, including apolipoprotein E ${\varepsilon}4$ status, lipid profile and thyroid hormones, were also examined. Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were performed to analyze the relationship between the degree of cerebral degeneration and neurocognitive functions. Results Demographic and clinical features, except for the age, did not show any significant difference between the two groups divided according to the degree of cerebral degenerative changes. However, higher degree of GCA was shown to be associated with poorer performance in verbal fluency test, word list recall test, and word list recognition test. Higher degree of MTA was shown to be associated with poorer performance in Mini-Mental State Examination in the Korean Version of CERAD Assessment Packet (MMSE-KC), word list recognition test and construction praxis recall test. Higher degree of white matter hyperintensities was shown to be associated with poorer performance in MMSE-KC. Conclusions Our results suggest that severe brain degeneration shown in MRI is associated with significantly poorer performance in neurocognitive tests in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, the degree of GCA, MTA and white matter hyperintensities, represented by scores from different visual rating scales, seems to affect certain neurocognitive domains each, which would provide useful information in clinical settings.

The Parathyroid Gland: An Overall Review of the Hidden Organ for Radiologists (부갑상선: 부갑상선 영상에 익숙하지 않은 영상의학과 의사들을 위한 전반적인 검토)

  • Parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands that regulate calcium metabolism by producing parathyroid hormone (PTH). These are located at the back of the thyroid gland. Typically, four glands comprise the parathyroid glands, although their numbers may vary among individuals. Parathyroid diseases are related to parathyroid gland dysfunction and can be caused by problems with the parathyroid gland itself or abnormal serum calcium levels arising from renal disease. In recent years, as comprehensive health checkups have become more common, abnormal serum calcium levels are often found incidentally in blood tests, after which several additional tests, including a PTH test, ultrasonography (US), technetium-99m sestamibi parathyroid scan, single-photon-emission CT (SPECT)/CT, four-dimensional CT (4D-CT), and PET/CT, are performed for further evaluation. However, the parathyroid gland remains an organ less familiar to radiologists. Therefore, the normal anatomy, pathophysiology, imaging, and clinical findings of the parathyroid gland and its associated diseases are discussed here.
