The number of engines for fighters has been decided by thrust required and available engines at the time since the beginning of the jet age. However, many factors such as combat effectiveness, survivability, performance, and cost were considered as engine technology has been progressed. From the vietnam war and desert storm, a twin engine fighter was shown slight superiority to a single engine one in an vulnerability, but single engine fighters were a little predominant in susceptibility This paper includes the trade-off study results on the number of engines for the supersonic light attack aircraft with single and twin engines. Twin engine configuration is 8%, 26%, and 13% higher than single engine one in MTOGW, Flyaway Cost, and LCC respectively. Little difference has been found in RM&S, Maneuver and field performance. According to the factors above, single engine fighter is profitable for low class and twin engine one for medium and higher class.

Dual-bell nozzle can overcome the performance losses of the conventional bell-shaped nozzles which induced by off-design operations with either over-expanded or under-expanded exhaust flow and minimize the losses of the specific impulse. In United States, Rocketdyne analyzed thrust characteristics according to the shape of the expansion nozzle and NASA conducted hot firing tests with various altitudes. DLR, which is one of the research institute of the Europe, is carrying out research for the different cases of inflection angle, nozzle length and expansion ratio. MAI of Russia applied the slot nozzle to the expansion region in order to reduce the performance losses. In Asia, both the Japan and the India are researching on the dual-bell nozzle and Mitsubishi cooperation of the Japan registered its patent. In this paper, concepts and performance of dual-bell nozzle, which can compensate altitude, are investigated and trends of current research are summarized. It is necessary for Korea to research on the dual-bell nozzle for lucrative space development.

The propulsion system of space launch vehicle generates thrust by supplying oxidizer and fuel to combustion chamber. KSLV-II 2nd stage engine, currently under development by KARI, is to use liquid oxygen as a oxidizer and JET-A1 as a fuel. The 2nd stage pump-fed engine is mainly composed of combustion chamber, turbo-pump and engine supply system. To develop liquid propulsion engine, the development of combustion chamber must be preceded. For performance validation of the combustion chamber, the designed and manufactured combustion chamber should be tested in combustion chamber test facility(CCTF). The detailed design for the planned CCTF in Naro Space Center was conducted. The fuel supply system modeling using AMESim was performed based on the results of the detailed design, and the fuel supply characteristics was analyzed in this paper.

Critical speed of high thrust liquid rocket engine turbopump is obtained through a rotordynamic analysis and a unloaded turbopump test is peformed for validation of the numerical model. The first critical speed predicted by the numerical analysis is correlated well with the test result for the bearing unloaded rotor condition only considering mass unbalance load. Using the previous rotordynamic model, critical speed variation is estimated as a function of varied bearing stiffness due to pump and turbine radial loads with relative angle difference. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the relative angle difference of pump and turbine radial loads greatly affects the critical speed. However, additional axial load reduces the effect derived from the relative angle difference of radial loads.

A development history of the thrusters used for space-vehicle orbit maneuver/attitude control is reviewed with their performance characteristics. Especially, a scrutiny is made for the current and practical application of TVC/Gimbal/Thrusters to the roll/pitch/yaw-axis control of each stage of launch vehicles. It is well perceived that a precise 3-axis attitude control system (ACS) must be equipped on the final stage of space launch vehicles (SLV) for an attainment of orbit-insertion accuracy. Under the superior reliability as well as moderate performance features, the monopropellant hydrazine thrusters occupy most of the SLV's 3-axis ACS currently operated. Domestic development status of the medium-thrust-level thruster is shortly introduced, finally.
The change of the global performance of a turret-moored FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading) with DP (Dynamic Positioning) control is simulated, analyzed, and compared for two different internal turret location cases; bow and midship. Both collinear and non-collinear 100-yr GOM (Gulf of Mexico) storm environments and three cases (mooring-only, with DP position control, with DP position+heading control) are considered. The horizontal trajectory, 6DOF (degree of freedom) motions, fairlead mooring and riser tension, and fuel consumptions are compared. The PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller based on LQR (linear quadratic regulator) theory and the thrust-allocation algorithm which is based on the penalty optimization theory are implemented in the fully-coupled time-domain hull-mooring-riser-DP simulation program. Both in collinear and non-collinear 100-yr WWC (wind-wave-current) environments, the advantage of mid-ship turret is demonstrated by the significant reduction in heave at the turret location due to the minimal coupling with pitch mode, which is beneficial to mooring and riser design. However, in the non-collinear WWC environment, the mid-turret case exhibits unfavorable weathervaning characteristics, which can be reduced by employing DP position and heading controls as demonstrated in the present case studies. The present study also reveals the plausible cause of the failure of mid-turret Gryphon Alpha FPSO in milder environment than its survival condition.
The $M_W$ 9.0 thrust-fault earthquake has occurred in the Pacific coast of Tohoku, Japan, on March 11, 2011. We present the detection of the great earthquake and analyze T-waves associated with the main event and two other big aftershocks ($M_W$ > 7) recorded in a hydroacoustic array (H11N) in the Pacific Ocean by performing array and spectral analysis to examine characteristics of T-waves generated from the big events. The complex rupture process of the main event directly influences on the shape of the T-waves, and the peak locates on where T-waves excited from fast rupturing process arrive. We compare the two aftershocks with different fault type and show that the fault type and the source depth change shape and spectral contents of T-waves.
This paper presents a method to accommodate failures that affect aircraft dynamical characteristics, especially control surface jams on a large transport aircraft. The approach is to use the slow effectors, such as the stabilators or engines, in the feedforward manner. The simulation results indicate the performance of the RFCS. In some cases of control surface jam, the aircraft cannot recover without using the stabilators. Although the inputs to the slow effectors are determined using the nominal parameters, the effects of parameter change can be compensated by adjusting the control parameters for the fast surfaces. In the case of rudder jam, if the remaining control surfaces and the differential thrust cancel the moments produced by the stuck rudder, using the engine control improves time responses and reduces deflection angles of the control surfaces. If not, however, the aircraft starts a large rolling motion following a yawing motion. In that case, the stabilators should be used to damp the induced rolliig motion, instead of trying to directly cancel the moments caused by the stuck rudder. Unfortunately, the proposed control law for the stabilators does not give such inputs, because it does not take into account the dynamical effects which stuck surfaces have on the aircraft motions. However, we have shown through simulation that the aircraft can be recovered by giving the stabilators the control inputs that counteract the induced rolling moment. Besides, the method has also been shown through simulation to be effective in maintaining control during a situation similar to an actual accident. Finally let us mention a problem with the RFCS. As stated above, we have not established a method to select a trim point which call be reached as easily as possible using the remaining control effectors. In fact, recovery performance considerably depends on the trim states. As pointed out in Ref. 11, finding the best trim point for impaired aircraft will be one of the most difficult questions in RFCS design.

The implementation of gelled propellants systems offers high performance, thrust-control, energy management of propulsion, storability, and high density impulse of solid propulsion. Present study focused on the spray behavior of liquid sheets formed by impinging jets of non-Newtonian liquids which are mixed by Carbopol 941 0.5%wt. The results are then compared with experiments conducted on spray images formed by impinging jets concerning with air-blast effect at center orifice. When gel propellants are injected by doublet impinging jets at low pressure, closed rim pattern shape appeared. As increasing air mass flow rate(decreasing GLR), spray breakup and atomization phenomenon better improved and spray structure instabilities for the effect of air-blast are also increased.
An analytical solution procedure is described to estimate the developed passive lateral earth Pressures behind a vertical rigid retaintng wall rotating about its toe into a mass of cohesionless soil. Various stases of wall rotation, starting from an at-rest state to an initial Passive state to a full Passive state, are considered in the analysis. Condition of failure defined by a modified Mohr-coulomb criterion, together with equilibrium conditions, is used to obtain the necessary equations for the solution. Using methods of stress characteristics and numerical finite difference, a complete solution within and on the boundaries of the entire solution domain is made possible. The variations of the soil shear strength and the wall friction at various depths and stages of wall rotation are also taken into account in the analysis. The results predicted by the developed method of analysis are compared with those obtained from the experimental model tests on loose and dense sand. The comparisons show good agreements at various stages of retaining wall rotation Fin- ally, results of analytical parametric study are presented to demonstrate the effects of wall fric- tion on the resultant thrust and distribution of developed lateral earth pressures.
