The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth, open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality in February, 1995. The HANARO is composed af inlet plenum, grid plate, core channel with flow tubes and chimney. The reactor core channel is located at about twelve meters (12 m) depth of the reactor pool and cooled by the upward flow that the coolant enters the lower inlet of the plenum, rises up through the grid plate and the core channel and comes out from the outlet of chimney. A fission moly guide tube is extended from the reactor core to the top of the reactor chimney for easily loading a fission moly target under the reactor normal operation. But active coolant through the core can be quickly raised up to the top of the chimney through the guide tube by jet flow. This paper describes an analytical analysis that is the study of the flow behavior through the guide tube under reactor normal operation and unloading the target. As results, it was conformed through the analysis results that the flow rate, reduced to about fourteen kilogram per second (14 kg/s) from the original flow rate of sixteen point three kilogram per second (16.3 kg/s) did not show the guide tube jet.
Cross flow fan system is widely used for various applications, especially for the air-moving device of heaters, air-conditioners, and air-curtains. Although there are efforts for the optimization of cross-flow fan flow path with different methods of approach, it is still being investigated by many researchers through experimentally and/or theoretically, because the flow pattern of the cross flow fan is not stereotyped. This paper presents some results from numerical experiments for the optimization of the flow path through a cross-flow fan to be applied to indoor wall-mounted room heater. Two dimensional analysis has been applied to a specific fan system including inlet and diffuser outlet. Flow characteristics art presented and discussed for two different flow path at three different operating conditions represented by rotational speed(800, 1,000, 1,200 rpm) of the In. According to the simulated results for the specific fan system under consideration, it could be found that the flow pattern resembles each other at different rotational speed (to say from 800 rpm to 1,200 rpm) for a fixed flow path, while the secondary flows mostly absorbs the speed effects. By changing the flow path significant increase in volume flow rate is estimated upto 2.65 at the same rotational speed. According to the present experience, fan flow path design can be performed more efficiently by incorporating this type of numerical experiments combined with the model tests.

Simple design methods were developed to control the coolant flow rates through cylinder head gasket holes. Applying the concept of flow through an obstruction the ratio of intake to exhaust side flow rates could be easily controlled while maintaining the flow rates per cylinder of the original model. Flow distribution in the coolant passage of the original model was calculated by CFD and the flow rates at the gasket holes were modified based on the calculation results. The calculated flow rated of the modified gasket holes were reasonably close to target values. For more accurate control of the flow rate distribution, a design method with iterative CFD calculations was also suggested. The final size of gasket holes for the target flow rates were obtained just after a few optimization iterations. These methods can be very useful for the optimization of heat transfer characteristics in engine cylinder head and block.

Flow control of flow field is essential to design efficient elements relating to fluid machineries. In this study, flow characteristics of rectangular prism with center gap through-flow at different aspect ratio was investigated to flow control. It was used a FLUENT 6.3 version to study flow field. It was found that the through-flow disturbs the development of vertical velocity component and decreased the vortex size and critical value of a rapid change in pressure coefficient distribution.

This study is on the performance of the perforated tube muffler when it operates as an exhaust silencer with through-flow, steady or pulsating. Theoretical estimation of the insertion loss was made by means of transfer matrix and by using the impedance equation for the perforated tube obtained for the case of low-speed steady through-flow. Experiment was performed for the measurement of the insertion loss at two flow conditions. The one is a steady flow from the exhaust pipe of an idling diesel engine. The effect of the through-flow velocity and steadiness on the muffler performance was obtained. By comparing the theoretical prediction with the experimental result, the validity of the impedance equation in the theoretical model was discussed. It has been found that steadiness as well as magnitude of the through-flow has a significant effect on the performance of the perforated tube muffler. Especially, the self-noise due to the pulsating flow in the engine exhaust system must be taken into account for the prediction of the muffler performance.

A numerical model of refrigerant flow through a capillary tube is developed, which considers the effects of underpressure for vaporization, kinetic energy, and roughness of capillary tube. The numerical model is based on homogeneous flow assumptions for the two-phase flow region. A characteristic chart of HFC refrigerants flow through capillary tubes and correction factor chart of geometry and relative roughness of capillary tube to select a proper capillary for refrigerating machines using alternative refrigerants is presented by this numerical model.

Measurements of local blowing ratio and ammonia-diazo flow visualizations have been conducted for a shower-head film cooling on a first-stage turbine stator. In this study, six rows of normal holes are drilled symmetrically on the semicircular leading edge of a simulated blunt body. The measurements show that for an average blowing ratio based on freestream velocity, M, of 0.5, local average mass flow rate through the first two rows of the holes is less than those through the second and third two rows of the holes, and the fraction of mass flow rate through the first two rows to total mass flow rate has a tendency to increase with the increment of M. The flow visualizations reveal that the injection through the first two row results in inferior film coverage even In the case of M = 0.5, meanwhile the row of holes situated at farther downstream location provides higher film-cooling performances for all tested M. This is because film-cooling effectiveness depends on local mainflow velocity at the hole location as well as the mass flow rate through each row.
Flow visualization of a droplet passing through a straight channel and a diverging channel has been carried out using micro-PIV. Diverging channel is frequently used in lab-on-a-chip and microfluidic devices, where flow pattern inside the droplet passing is quite different from that through a straight channel. In the present study, we visualized the droplet flow in three different regions. The first region is where the droplet has a wide contact area with the channel wall, the second region is characterized with a narrow contact area and the third region is where droplet is detached from the channel wall. Visualization results show that the internal flow inside the droplet passing through the straight channel moves in the opposite direction to the droplet velocity in the near wall exhibiting complex flow patterns. But in the diverging channel the internal flow inside the droplet moves in the same direction as the droplet velocity due to the shear induced by oil phase flow exhibiting rather simple flow pattern.
Hemodialysis is essential for patients with end stage renal failure. It is important to improve the patency rate and to minimize occurrence of the stenosis. Also, the blood flow to the artificial kidney can affect the blood flow characteristics through arteriovenous graft. Thus, the delivered dose are important factors for analyzing hemodynamic characteristics during hemodialysis access. In this study, the numerical analysis was performed for the effect of the delivered dose during hemodialysis access on the blood flow through the graft. As a result, The adverse pressure gradient occurred in case of a larger delivered dose through a catheter than standard dose and the flow instability increased. Also the circulation flow appeared largely at anastomotic site of the vein when the delivered dose was exceeded about half blood flow of inlet blood flow.
Results from an experimental study of flow distribution in a close-coupled catalytic converter(CCC) are presented. The experiments were carried out with a flow measurement system specially designed for this study under steady and transient flow conditions. A pitot tube was a tool for measuring flow distribution at the exit of the first monolith. The flow distribution of the CCC was also measured by LDV system and flow visualization. Results from numerical analysis are also presented. Experimental results showed that the flow uniformity index decreases as flow Reynolds number increases. In steady flow conditions, the flow through each exhaust pipe made some flow concentrations on a specific region of the CCC inlet. The transient test results showed that the flow through each exhaust pipe in the engine firing order, interacted with each other to ensure that the flow distribution was uniform. The results of numerical analysis were qualitatively accepted with experimental results. They supported and helped explain the flow in the entry region of CCC.
