In this paper are presented a concept of a new supersonic air inlet, which is designated a Multi-Row Disk (MRD) inlet, aiming at performance improvement under off-design conditions, and results of wind tunnel tests examined performance characteristics of the MRD inlet. The MRD inlet is frequently called ‘a skeleton inlet’ because of its appearance. The performance of a conventional axisymmetric inlet with a solid center body (spike) deteriorates under off-design Mach number conditions. It is due to the fact that total pressure recovery (TPR) governed by the throat area of inlet and mass capture ratio (MCR) governed by an incidence position of an oblique shock from the spike tip into the cowl can not be controlled independently in such air inlet. The MRD inlet has the spike that is composed of a tip cone and several disks arranged downstream of it, based on the experimental fact that several deep cavities on a conical surface have little negative effect on the boundary layer growth. The overall spike length of the MRD inlet is adjustable to the given flight speed by changing space between disks so that a spillage flow can be controlled independently from controlling the throat area. It could be made clear from the result of wind tunnel tests that the MRD inlet improves TPR by 10% compared with a conventional inlet with a solid spike under off-design conditions.
Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and the results are compared to the existing experimental data. Steady two-dimensional flow in a collapsible channel with initial tension is also simulated and the results are compared with numerical solutions from the literature. Computational results show that as cross-sectional area decreases with the reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches the maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near the unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicating the flow limitation or choking (flow speed equals wave speed) in one-dimensional studies. for further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. The flow limitation or choking consist of the main reasons of waterfall effect which occurs in the airways, capillaries of lung, and other veins. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is 2, the area throat is located near the downstream end. As this ratio is increased to 3, the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube.

Ejectors, having no moving, lubricating and leaking parats, are widely used as marine pumps because of its high working confidence. For instance, uses in ships are stripping in crude oil tank, bilge discharge in engine room, ballast water pumping on are carrier, and brine discharge from fresh water generator. And it is also used as cooling water recirculating pump in boiling water type nuclear reactor and deep-well pump. It is not easy to determine the optimal dimension for designing each ejector agreed with its suggested performance condition, because complicated calculations must be repeated to obtain the maximum efficiency affected by flowrate ratio, head ratio, area ratio and so on. Therefore, it is considered that the CAD (Computer-Aided Design) for ejector is a powerful method for design according to the individual design condition. In this paper, a computer program for water ejector design is developed based on the previous paper on theoretical analysis and experimental results for water ejector. And from the theoretical approach, an equation for the working limit and an equation for determing the shape of throat are obtained. The validity of the present computer program is sufficiently confirmed through the comparison of the computed results with the main dimension of the previous manufactured water ejector. This program will be easily developed as the CAD for various kinds of ejectors, including steam ejector.

This paper presents flow regime maps of two-dimensional, planar diffusers with constant-area ducts at very low Reynolds numbers. They are obtained from numerical calculations using the commercial CFD program CFD-ACE+. The Reynolds numbers considered are 63, 105, and 210. For each Reynolds number, a wide range of geometric parameters of dimensionless diffuser length, which is a ratio of diffuser length to throat width, $1 and divergence half angle $1^{\circ}<\phi<50^{\circ}$ are selected to obtain steady-state solutions. These maps can be served as a guideline to designers for very low Reynolds number diffuser flows.

Ejector system can induce the secondary flow or affect the secondary chamber pressure by both shear stress and pressure drop which are generated in the primary jet boundary. Ejectors are widely used in a range of applications such as a turbine-based combined-cycle propulsion system and a high altitude test facility for rocket engine, pressure recovery system, desalination plant and ejector ramjet etc. The primary interest of this study is to set up an design procedure on the configuration and operating condition of multi-ejector for the various high altitude simulation.
The steady non-reacted compressible flow field in a symmetric micro-thruster, which is used for the accurate attitude control of a satellite, is analyzed varying the nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) to investigate the plume characteristics. The nozzle throat diameter is 0.06 inch and the area ratio is 56. The recirculation region is found just behind the normal shock at the several NPRs due to the locally adverse pressure gradient along the nozzle centerline when the environmental pressure is atmospheric. This phenomenon, the cause of flow loss, is similar to the flow behind a blunt body. As NPR increases the location of Mach disk, characteristics of the normal shock, moves downstream and its strength increases. The Mach number distribution appears in a wave-type patter after the normal shock because oblique shocks are reflected on the shock boundaries especially when NPRs are very high.

Experimental and theoretical investigation on the sonic and subsonic ejectors with a converging-diverging diffuser was carried out. Numerical simulation was adopted for an optimal geometry design and satisfying the required performance. Also, some ejectors with a various of nozzle throat and mixing chamber diameter were manufactured precisely and tested for the comparison with the calculation results.

The flow characteristics in the thruster should be analyzed considering its geometry and the pressure ratio to estimate its performance and etc. This paper suggests the computational result of an axisymmetric real nozzle for the altitude control of a satellite to find out the application limit that the assumption of continuum mechanics holds. The steady non-reacted compressible flow field in the unstructured grid system is computed and analyzed with varying the environmental pressure (or the degree of vacuum) under the fixed pressure ratio in a real thruster of which the area ratio of exit to throat is 56. The assumption of the continuum mechanics is not approved when the environmental pressure is reduced less than $10^{-3}$ atm.

Compound choking frequently occurs at a minimum area of the flow passage, where two or more streams which have different stagnation properties are merged. This phenomenon is especially important in that the flow choking may not be given by Mach number, M=1 at the nozzle throat. In order to obtain a detailed understanding of the flow characteristics involved in the compound flow choking, the two-dimensional, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are solved using a fully implicit finite volume method and the predicted solutions are compared with the results of the one-dimensional theoretical analysis. Stagnation pressure and temperature of each stream are changed to investigate the effects on the compound choking. The results show that stagnation pressures of each stream affect Mach number and static pressure distributions downstream of the exit of the convergent nozzle. However, the flow characteristics of the compound choking are not significantly dependent on the total temperature ratio.
The three-dimensional numerical study of a water jet pump was carried out to investigate the relationship between performance and the geometric variables of nozzle space, area ratio, and throat length. Because of the complex geometry, the multiblock technique was adopted for numerical analysis and a special treatment for transferring data from each of the block interfaces was implemented in order to maintain the conserved properties. To validate the present code, flow passing through a square duct with a 90-deg bend was computed, our results show good accordance with other experimental and computational results. The numerical simulation was done with the flow of the water jet pump having a 180-deg bend in order to calculate the performance at different operating conditions. The performance of the water jet pump can be improved by study of parameters which clarify the relations between the geometric variables and the flow characteristics of vortex strength and location.
