  • Multi-temporal satellite imagery can be changed into a transform image that emphasizes the changed area only through the application of various change detection techniques. From the transform image, an automated change detection model calculates the optimal threshold value for classifying the changed and unchanged areas. However, the model can cause undesirable results when the histogram of the transform image is unbalanced. This is because the model uses a single threshold value in which the sign is either positive or negative and its value is constant (e.g. -1, 1), regardless of the imbalance between changed pixels. This paper proposes an advanced method that can improve accuracy by applying separate threshold values according to the increased or decreased range of the changed pixels. It applies multiple threshold values based on the cumulative producer's and user's accuracies in the automated binary change detection model, and the analyst can automatically extract more accurate optimal threshold values. Multi-temporal IKONOS satellite imagery for the Daejeon area was used to test the proposed method. A total of 16 transformation results were applied to the two study sites, and optimal threshold values were determined using accuracy assessment curves. The experiment showed that the accuracy of most transform images is improved by applying multiple threshold values. The proposed method is expected to be used in various study fields, such as detection of illegal urban building, detection of the damaged area in a disaster, etc.

  • Purpose: This study estimates the threshold values of institutional quality through investigating the non-linear effect of six sub-indices of Worldwide Governance Indicators on FDI inflows in 34 developing countries in Asia and Eastern Europe over the period from 2000-2017. Research Design, data and methodology: GMM EGLS is employed which does not include the lagged value of the dependent variable as an independent variable. As a proxy for the institutional quality, either one of the six sub-indices of WGI from World Bank or the composite index obtained through a principal component analysis is used in a separate model. Results: An improvement in institutional quality, when the quality stays below a certain threshold level, does not increase FDI inflows, and only when the quality is above the threshold, it can positively influence FDI inflows. The threshold values of political stability and absence of violence, government effectiveness, and rule of law are relatively higher than those of the other dimensions of WGI. Conclusion: Institutional quality of the developing economies of Asia and Eastern Europe has a non-linear effect on FDI inflows. The target countries need to upgrade their institutional quality above the threshold in order to attract more FDIs.

  • This paper presents a method for detecting scene changes in video sequences, in which the $chi^{2}$-test is modified by imposing weights according to NTSC standard. To automatically determine threshold values for scene change detection, the proposed method utilizes the frame differences that are obtained by the weighted $chi^{2}$-test. In the first step, the mean and the standard deviation of the difference values are calculated, and then, we subtract the mean difference value from each difference value. In the next step, the same process is performed on the remained difference values, mean-subtracted frame differences, until the stopping criterion is satisfied. Finally, the threshold value for scene change detection is determined by the proposed automatic threshold estimation algorithm. The proposed method is tested on various video sources and, in the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method is reliably estimates the thresholds and detects scene changes.

  • In this paper, the embedded zero-tree wavelet image compression method using multi- threshold is proposed, which can reduce the scanning and symbol redundancy of the existing embedded zero-tree wavelet (EZW) method and enable more efficient coding. In the proposed scheme, a multi-threshold is constructed with the maximum absolute values from each subband decomposed by the wavelet transforms of the input image data. The multi-threshold values are compared with the threshold value T$_1$ in each pass in Successive Approximation Quantization (SAQ) to select the significant subbands, which are only used for the subsequent coding processes, therefore, can reduce the coding redundancy in the existing EZW. By the experimental results, it is verified that the proposed multi-threshold EZW method shows superior performances to the existing EZW method.

  • This paper presents a novel automated threshold-decision algorithm that uses the mean and standard-deviation values obtained from the difference values of consecutive frames. At first, the calculation of difference values is obtained by the weighted ${\chi}^2$-test algorithm which was modified by joining color histogram to ${\chi}^2$-test algorithm. The weighted ${\chi}^2$-test algorithm can subdivide the difference values by imposing weights according to NTSC standard. In the first step, the proposed automatic threshold-decision algorithm calculates the mean and standard-deviation value from the total difference values, and then subtracts the mean value from the each difference values. In the next step, the same process is performed on the remained difference values, and lastly, the threshold is detected from the mean when the standard deviation has a maximum value. The proposed method is tested on various video sources and, in the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method efficiently estimates the thresholds and reliably detects scene changes.

  • Since SPOT4 satellite contained VEGETATION 1 sensor launched, the noise in VEGETATION data was occasionally arisen a difficulty for the data traitement. Blind line noise types were studied in VEGETATION-l short wave infrared channel(SWIR). In order to provide a precis product, the procedure for removing this noise is strongly recommended. In the case that the blind values are clearly distinguished from contamination-free values a simple threshold method was applied, while a changeable threshold method was used for the blind value mixed with contamination-free values. New algorithm presented in this study is consists of two method for each type of SWIR blind. After removing blind line, there were again some residual pixels of blind, because the threshold is not determinated sufficiently low. Lower threshold could remove the blind line as well as the contamination-free pixels. Nevertheless, the results showed a good qualitative improvement as compared with other algorithm.

  • This paper reviews and develops several statistical models for extreme values, based on threshold methodology. Extreme values of a time series are modeled in terms of tails which are defined as truncated forms of original variables, and Markov property is imposed on the tails. Tails of the generalized extreme value distribution and a multivariate extreme value distributively, of the tails of the series. These models are then applied to real ozone data series collected in the Chicago area. A major concern is given to detecting any possible trend in the extreme values.

  • The topography is recognized as an important factor in determining the streamflow response of watershed to precipitation. In watershed analysis, stream networks are very important parameters. Each DEM grid size and flowaccumulation threshold value of drainage accumulation matrix have influence on stream networks extracted by using grid DEM. Therefore, stream networks extracted from DEM varies with each DEM grid size and flowaccumulation threshold value. Generally, small threshold values will generate more detailed stream network with higher drainage density High threshold values will generate coarser stream networks. In this paper, total stream length in the study area was used to calculate the flowaccumulation threshold value by each DEM grid size. Stream network was derived by each DEM grid size, which is applied flowaccumulation threshold value. Regression equation was derived by correlation between flowaccumulation threshold value and each DEM grid size.

  • Purpose: This study extends previous empirical work on the threshold effects of institutions on the relationship between infrastructure and economic growth. It does so by using three sub-indices of institutions as the threshold variable in place of aggregate index. This is with a view to determining the roles of the sub-indices in the nexus between infrastructure and economic growth. Research design, data and methodology: The analysis is based on a dynamic panel threshold regression model using a panel data set comprising 41 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa over the sample period of 1996-2015. Data are obtained from Ogbaro (2019). Results: The study finds that infrastructure exerts significant positive effects on economic growth below and above the threshold values of the three sub-indices, with higher effects above the threshold values. Results also show that on average, the Sub-Saharan African countries are not able to satisfy any of the threshold conditions, which accounts for their poor growth experience. Conclusion: The study concludes that countries with weak institutions do not benefit maximally from infrastructure development policies. The paper, therefore, recommends that countries in Sub-Saharan Africa need to focus on improving their institutional patterns if they are to reap the optimum benefits from their infrastructure development efforts.

  • In construction of breadth-frist tree, the communication complexity can be reduced by efficent synchronization schemes based on several threshold values, We determine several new threshold values by considering the graph density represented as lognm, where n and m are the number of nodes and links., repectively. When thesethreshold values are used in the synchroization method for constructing distrbuted bradth-first search tree, we can obtain a more efficient algorithm in sparse graphs, and also, this algorithm has vthe same performance for communication complexity in dense graphs.
