  • The recent occurrence of consecutive large earthquakes in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula has brought significant attention to the prevention of earthquake damage in Korea. This article aims to explore a technology-based approach for earthquake drills using state-of-the-art visual intelligence and virtual reality technologies. The technical process consists of several stages, including acquisition of image information in living spaces using a camera, recognition of objects from the acquired image information, extraction of three dimensional geometric information, simulation of virtual earthquakes using dynamic modelling techniques such as the discrete element method, and realization of the simulated earthquake in a virtual reality environment. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the individual processes at each stage of the technical process, a survey on the current status of related technologies, and discussion of the technical challenges in its execution.

  • This paper presents an attempt to develop a visual programming language-based 3D virtual reality authoring tool intended to compose virtual interior space. The rapid development of digital technology and the wide spread of the Intenet have expanded the different uses of virtual reality in a number of applications ranging from interior design to building maintenance. In particular, the construction of cyber spaces based on existing interior spaces is becoming increasingly important. Current research, however, remains at the level of converting 3D models into virtual reality models, despite practitioners' needs for structural space models. Moreover, commercial tools to build virtual reality space have the disadvantage of targeting people who have professional knowledge of computer programs and computer graphics. Accordingly, the 3D virtual reality authoring tool developed in this research - called the VESL system - enables virtual and structural space to be easily composed using intuitive and interactive visual interfaces, which are based on visual programming techniques. The VESL system also provides an XML based semantic description of interior space, to be used to describe interior space information. We anticipate that the virtual reality spaces composed by this system will be of considerable use in the fields of architecture and interior design. Further research issues identified at the end of the research include developing a converter/filter for transforming Internet virtual reality standard language, or VRML, and evaluating the application of the system for practical use.

  • In this paper, we propose a technique to estimate the coordinates of feature points existing on a 2D planar object in the three dimensional space. The proposed method detects multiple 3D features from the image, and excludes those which are not located on the plane. The proposed technique estimates the planar homography between the planar object in the 3D space and the camera image plane, and computes back-projection error of each feature point on the planar object. Then any feature points which have large error is considered as off-plane points and are excluded from the feature estimation phase. The proposed method is archived on the basis of the planar homography without any additional sensors or optimization algorithms. In the expretiments, it was confirmed that the speed of the proposed method is more than 40 frames per second. In addition, compared to the RGB-D camera, there was no significant difference in processing speed, and it was verified that the frame rate was unaffected even in the situation that the number of detected feature points continuously increased.

  • The rapid growth of aerial survey and remote sensing technology has enabled the rapid acquisition of very large amounts of geographic data, which should be analyzed using real-time visualization technology. The level of detail(LOD) algorithm is one of the most important elements for realizing real-time visualization. We chose the triangulated irregular network (TIN) method to generate normalized digital elevation model(DEM) data. First, we generated TIN data using contour lines obtained from a two-dimensional(2D) digital map and created a 2D grid array fitting the size of the area. Then, we generated normalized DEM data by calculating the intersection points between the TIN data and the points on the 2D grid array. We used constrained Delaunay triangulation(CDT) and ray-triangle intersection algorithms to calculate the intersection points between the TIN data and the points on the 2D grid array in each step. In addition, we simulated a three-dimensional(3D) terrain model based on normalized DEM data with real-time visualization using a Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 program in the DirectX API library and a quad-tree LOD algorithm.

  • It is one of the most important issues to determine a target brain image that gives a common coordinate system for a constructing population-based brain atlas. The purpose of this study is to provide a simple and reliable procedure that determines the target brain image among the group based on the inherent structural information of three-dimensional magnetic resonance (MR) images. It uses only 11 lines defined automatically as a feature vector representing structural variations based on the Talairach coordinate system. Average characteristic vector of the group and the difference vectors of each one from the average vector were obtained. Finally, the individual data that had the minimum difference vector was determined as the target. We determined the target brain image by both our algorithm and conventional visual inspection for 20 healthy young volunteers. Eighteen fiducial points were marked independently for each data to evaluate the similarity. Target brain image obtained by our algorithm showed the best result, and the visual inspection determined the second one. We concluded that our method could be used to determine an appropriate target brain image in constructing brain atlases such as disease-specific ones.

  • In this paper, we design and implement E-COIRS enabling users to query with concepts and image features used for further refining the concepts. For example, E-COIRS supports the query "retrieve images containing black home appliance to north of reception set. "The query includes two types of concepts: IS-A and composite. "home appliance"is an IS-A concept, and "reception set" is a composite concept. For evaluating such a query. E-COIRS includes three important components: a visual image indexer, thesauri and a query processor. Each pair of objects in an mage captured by the visual image indexer is converted into a triple. The triple consists of the two object identifiers (oids) and their spatial relationship. All the features of an object is referenced by its old. A composite concept is detected by the triple thesaurus and IS-A concept is recolonized by the fuzzy term thesaurus. The query processor obtains an image set by matching each triple in a user with an inverted file and CS-Tree. To support efficient storage use and fast retrieval on high-dimensional feature vectors, E-COIRS uses Cell-based Signature tree(CS-Tree). E-COIRS is a more advanced content-based image retrieval system than other systems which support only concepts or image features.

  • Metastatic bone cancer, the cancer which occurred in the various organs and progressively spread to bone, is one of the complications in cancer patients. This cancer is divided into the osteoblast and osteolytic metastasis. Although Computer Tomography(CT) could be an useful tool in diagnosis of bone metastasis, lesions are often missed by the visual inspection and it makes clinicians difficult to detect metastasis earlier. Therefore, in this study, we construct a three-dimensional(3D) volume rendering data from tomography images of the chest CT, and apply a 3D based image processing algorithm to them for detection bone metastasis lesions. Then we perform a three-dimensional visualization of the detected lesions. From our test using 10 clinical cases, we confirmed 94.1% of average sensitivity for osteoblast, and 90.0% of average sensitivity, respectively. Consequently, our findings showed a promising possibility and potential usefulness in diagnosis of metastastic bone cancer.

  • Relative entropy is a divergence measure between two probability density functions of a random variable. Assuming that the random variable has only two alphabets, the relative entropy becomes a cross-entropy error function that can accelerate training convergence of multi-layer perceptron neural networks. Also, the n-th order extension of cross-entropy (nCE) error function exhibits an improved performance in viewpoints of learning convergence and generalization capability. In this paper, we derive a new divergence measure between two probability density functions from the nCE error function. And the new divergence measure is compared with the relative entropy through the use of three-dimensional plots.
