  • An experimental analysis using three-dimensional Laser Doppler Velocimetry(LDV) measurement and computational analysis using the Reynolds stress model in FLUENT are conducted to give a clear understanding of the effect of blade loading on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan operating at the maximum efficiency condition ($\Phi$=0.25) and two off-design conditions ($\Phi$=0.21 and 0.30). As the blade loading increases, the onset position of the rolling-up of tip leakage flow moves upstream and the trajectory of tip leakage vortex center is more inclined toward the circumferential direction. Because the casing boundary layer becomes thicker and the mixing between the through-flow and the leakage jet with the different flow direction is enforced, the streamwise vorticity decays more fast with the blade loading increasing. A distinct tip leakage vortex is observed downstream of the blade trailing edge at $\Phi$=0.30, but it is not observed at $\Phi$=0.21 and 0.25.

  • In this paper, a numerical analysis was performed to investigate the effect of the pitch angle of a helical nozzle on the performance characteristics of a vortex tube. Three-dimensional numerical simulation has been performed with standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model by using FLUENT 13.0. The effect of the pitch angle of helical nozzle was described in term of ${\beta}$. A CFD analysis was performed on ${\beta}=0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$. In order to realize the influence of ${\beta}$ on performances of the vortex tube. Computation results were expressed by the ${\beta}-{\Delta}T_{h,c}$ graph and radial profiles of axial velocity and swirl velocity. The results showed that ${\beta}$ which improves energy separation capacity of vortex tube was $5^{\circ}$ at ${\alpha}=0.33$, 0.5 and $10^{\circ}$ at ${\alpha}=0.33$. Besides, It was confirmed that the results were closely related to axial velocity and swirl velocity.

  • This paper aims at investigating the effect of crumb rubber size and content on compressive behaviors of concrete under axial compression. Concrete specimens are designed and produced by replacing natural aggregate with crumb rubber content of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and three different sized crumb rubbers (No. 20, No. 40, No. 80 crumb rubber). And the failure mode, compressive strength, elastic modulus, stress-strain curves, peak strain and ultimate strain are experimentally studied. Based on the test results, formulas have been presented to determine the compressive strength, elastic modulus, the relationship between prism compressive strength and cube compressive strength, stress-strain curves and peak strain of crumb rubber concrete (CRC). It is found that the proposed formulas agree well with the test result on the whole, which may be used to practical applications.

  • This paper describes the flow measurements inside the blade passage of an axial flow fan by using a rotating hot-wire probe sensor from a relative flame of reference fixed to the rotor blades. The validity of fan rotor designed by a streamline curvature equation was performed by the measurement of the three-dimensional flow upstream and downstream of the fan rotor using a 5-hole pitot tube. The vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed by the measurements of a relative velocity and its fluctuation on quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. Larger vortical flow, which results in higher blockage in the main flow, is formed according to decrease a flow rate. The vortical flow spreads out to the 30 percent span from the rotor tip at near stall condition. In the design operating condition, the tip leakage vortex is moved downstream while the center of the vortex keeps constant in the spanwise direction. Detailed characteristics of a velocity fluctuation with relation to the vortex were also analyzed.

  • Ceramic honeycomb structures have performed successfully as catalyst supports for meeting hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrous emissions standards for gasoline-powered vehicles. Three-way catalyst converter has to withstand high temperature and thermal stress due to pressure fluctuations and vibrations. Thermal stress constitutes a major portion of the total stress which the ceramic catalyst support experiences in service. In this study, temperature distribution was measured at ceramic catalyst supports. Thermal durability was evaluated by power series dynamic fatigue damage model. Radial temperature gradient was higher than axial temperature gradient. Thermal stresses depended on direction of elastic modulus. Axial stresses are higher than tangential stresses. Tangential and axial stresses remained below thermal fatigue threshold in all engine operation ranges.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the unsteady flow phenomena such as leakage flow and rotating stall which have influences on the performance and stability of an axial flow fan. For this study, unsteady pressure were measured using high frequency pressure transducers mounted on the easing wall of rotor passage and analyzed by Double Phase-Locked Averaging Technique. As the flow rate was reduced to near stall point, the pressure difference between the pressure and the suction side of the blade was increased especially new the leading edge and the lowest pressure zone of suction side was gradually developed. From the result of unsteady pressure field on the casing wall, one period of rotating stall was divided into three zones and the flow characteristics on each zone were described in detail.

  • An interactive mode of grid generation system has been developed for a Navier-Stokes design procedure of axial flow compressors. The present grid generator adopts the multiblock H-grid structure, which simplifies the creation of computational grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the manipulation of multiple grid blocks for multirow flow fields. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The system consists of four separated modules, which are linked together with a common graphical user interface. The system input is made of the results of the preliminary design. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the two-or three-dimensional flow simulation inside the blade passage. Application to the blade design of the LP compressor was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities. This customized system are coupled strongly with the design procedure of the turbomachinery cascades using the Navier-Stokes technique.

  • CFD analyses of the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the impeller and diffuser of an axial flow pump including suction and discharge parts are presented and compared with experimental data. The purpose of the current study is to validate the CFD method for the performance analysis of the main coolant pump for SMART and to investigate the effect of suction and discharge shapes on the pump performance. To generate a performance curve, not only the design point but also the off-design points were computed. The results were compared with available experimental data in terms of head generated. At the design point, the analysis accurately predicts the experimental head value. In the range of the higher flow rates, the results are also in very good agreement with the experimental data, in magnitude but also in terms of slope of variation. For lower flow rates, the results shows that the analysis considering the suction and discharge well describe the typical S-shape performance curve of the axial pump.

  • Although several artificial disc designs have been developed for the treatment of discogenic low back pain, biomechanical change with its implantation was rarely studied. To evaluate the effect of artificial disc implantation on the biomechanics of functional spinal unit, nonlinear three-dimensional finite element model of L4-L5 was developed with 1-mm CT scan data. Two models implanted with artificial discs, SB $Charit\acute{e}$ or Prodisc, via anterior approach were also developed. The implanted model predictions were compared with that of intact model. Angular motion of vertebral body, force on spinal ligaments and facet joint, and the stress distribution of vertebral endplate for flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation with a compressive preload of 400 N were compared. The implanted model showed increased flexion-extension range of motion and increased force in the vertically oriented ligaments, such as ligamentum flavum, supraspinous ligament and interspinous ligament. The increase of facet contact force on extension were greater in implanted models. The incresed stress distribution on vertebral endplate for implanted cases indicated that additinal bone growth around vertebral body and this is matched well with clinical observation. With axial rotation moment, relatively less axial rotation were observed in SB $Charit\acute{e}$ model than in ProDisc model.
