Effect of a fall cut on dry matter yield, nutritive value, and stand persistence of alfalfa

  • Information is lacking about the effect of date of a fall cut of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) on dry matter yield (DMY), forage nutritive value, and stands persistence. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of timing of a fall cut on DMY, forage nutritive value and stand persistence of three alfalfa varieties: low-lignin Hi-Gest 360, Roundup Ready Tonica, and conventional Gunner in Northeastern Kansas in the United States. The field study was carried out by splitting plot in randomized complete block design with four replications. The harvesting data of different maturity stages were collected in each year from 2015 to 2018. Three cuts were harvested based on the stage of maturity, and the last (fourth) cut was done on September 15, September 30, October 15, and October 30 of each year. The persistence of the alfalfa stands was determined each fall after the last cut, and each spring after the first cut, by counting the number of live plants in a randomly placed quadrat in each plot. Alfalfa cut on September 15 and September 30 had a higher stand persistence compared to alfalfa cut on October 15 and October 30. The DMY of the first cut in 2016 was significantly higher in roundup ready than the low-lignin alfalfa variety. In the second cut, DMY was significantly higher in conventional alfalfa than the roundup ready. There were no significant differences in DMY between alfalfa varieties in the rest of seasonal cuttings in 2016 and 2017 and annual total yield in both years. In general, low lignin alfalfa variety had higher crude protein and relative feed value and lower acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber contents than those in roundup ready and conventional alfalfa varieties. On average, nutritive value of alfalfa was generally affected by last cutting dates in 2017. Based on 3-year data the last cutting of alfalfa in the fall could be done by September 30-October 15 without harmful effect on DMY.

The Effects of Analyzing Mapping Errors in Concept Learning on the Three States of Matter with Analogy (비유를 사용한 물질의 세 가지 생태 개념 학습에서 대응 오류 분석 활동의 효과)

  • This study investigated the effects of analyzing mapping errors on conceptual understanding, mapping understanding and perceptions of the instructions in learning chemistry concept with analogy. Seventh graders (N=121) at two middle schools were assigned to the comparison and the treatment groups, and were taught about 'states of matter and arrangement of molecules.' The students in the comparison group were taught in the Teaching-With-Analogy (TWA) model, while those in the treatment group Were taught in the instructional model that changed 'mapping similarity' and 'indicating difference' of the TWA model into 'analyzing mapping errors.' Analysis of the results revealed that the scores of the conception test and the mapping test for the treatment group were significantly higher than those far the comparison group regardless of field dependence-independence. It was also found that most students in the two groups positively perceived the instructions with analogy, but the students in the treatment group had difficulties in analyzing mapping errors, Educational implications are discussed.

Effects of Strain Rate and Water Saturation on the Tensile Strength of Rocks (변형률 속도 및 수분포화가 암석의 인장강도에 미치는 영향)

  • Hopkinson's effect tests were carried out for various strain rates on three different types of rock in both saturated and dry states in order to examine the effects of strain rate and water saturation on tensile strength. The tensile strength increased with the increase of the strain rate not only in dry state but also in saturated state. It was also especially recognizable that the dynamic tensile strength of rock in the dry state was proportional to approximately a one-third multiple of strain rate no matter what the type of rock. It was found that water saturation decreased tensile strength in the dry state of sandstone and tuff, both with high porosity, but no significant difference could be recognized between the dry and the saturated states of granite, which has a low porosity of 0.49%.

Analysis of Level of Science Learning Concepts Presented in Life and Matter Fields of the 7th Grade Science Textbooks (7학년 과학 교과 생명 및 물질 영역의 과학 학습 개념의 수준 분석)

  • This study is to investigate the level of science learning concepts presented in life and matter fields of the 7th science textbooks. 6 units were analysed; 'the structure of living things', 'digestion and circulation' and 'respiration and excretion' of life field, and 'three states of matter', 'molecular motion', 'a change of state and the energy' of matter field. The gross number of concepts was 305 in life field, and 73 in matter field of the 7th science textbooks. Among publishing companies, the number of concepts was a little difference. Much more concepts in life field were presented than those in matter field. Percentages of the number of concrete and formal concepts were 58% and 42% in life, and 14% and 86% in matter field. The ratio of the number of concrete versus formal concepts was different between life and matter field. Thus, it is implied that science learning concepts are presented considering cognitive level of learner, and unit and content are constructed on the basis of properties of science fields in developing science curriculum and textbooks.

The Effects of Reciprocal Peer Questioning Strategy in Concept Learning on the Three States of Matter and Motion of Molecules (물질의 세 가지 상태 및 분자의 운동에 대한 개념 학습에서 상호동료 질문생성 전략의 효과)

  • In this study, the effects of reciprocal peer questioning (RPQ) strategy upon students' concept learning were investigated. Ninety-two seventh graders at a co-ed middle school were assigned to control, reciprocal peer tutoring (RPT), and RPQ groups. The students were taught about 'three states of matter' and 'motion of molecules' for 12 class hours. Regardless of students' prior science achievement level, the RPQ group showed the highest scores among the three groups in the test of conceptual understanding, and the RPT group performed better than the control group. For high-level students, the scores of the RPQ group were significantly higher than those of the other groups in the test of the concept application, and those of the RPT group were higher than those of the control group. For low-level students, the scores of the RPT and RPQ groups in the concept application test were significantly higher than those of the control group, while those of the RPT and RPQ groups were not significantly different. These results indicated that verbal interaction by reciprocal tutoring helped students to understand chemical concept learning, and that using self-generated questions was more effective. Therefore, RPQ strategy is suggested to become one of the useful instructional methods to facilitate verbal interaction and concept learning in middle school science instructions.

  • The study of two-dimensional electron systems with extraordinarily low levels of disorder was, for a long time, the exclusive privilege of the epitaxial thin film research community. However, the successful isolation of graphene by mechanical exfoliation has truly disrupted this field. Furthermore, the assembly of heterostructures consisting of several layers of different 2D materials in arbitrary order by exploiting van der Waals forces has been a game-changer in the field of low-dimensional physics. This technique can be generalized to the large class of strictly 2D materials and offers unprecedented parameters to play with in order to tune electronic and other properties. It has led to a paradigm shift in the field of 2D condensed matter physics with bright prospects. In this review article, we discuss three device fabrication techniques towards high mobility devices: suspended structures, dry transfer, and pick-up transfer methods. We also address state-of-the-art device structures, which are fabricated by the van der Waals pick-up transfer method. Finally, we briefly introduce correlated ground states in the fractional quantum Hall regime.

Information Communication Ethical Study on the Protection of Digital Copyrights and Alternatives: Focusing on the Secondary School Students

  • In the past, the judicial circles in the Republic of Korea (ROK) were generous to the online copyright violations of computer software compared to other academic areas or offline violation. However, they started to reconsider such a practice since the FTA talks with some advanced countries began so that new laws had to be established, especially after the first round of negotiations with United States of America (USA) in 2006 during which they changed their views on the matter. Now it became possible to penalize digital copyright violations through lawsuits, and from March 1st, 2017, the court is expected to abolish the nonsuit system for teenagers. Thus, this paper has reviewed the ethical aspects involved in digital copyright protection and examined the possible alternatives, dividing them into three broad groups, before proposing a digital copyright protection curriculum for secondary education.

  • The present study examined the inquiry type, process, and context of activities presented in the matter field of the 7th grade science textbook based on the 7th curriculum. It was to investigate for educational suggestions in instruction and development of science textbook. Three units of ‘three states of matter', ‘motion of molecule', ‘the state change and energy' were analyzed. The result indicated that the types, processes and skills, and context of inquiry were not balanced, and learners should be educated with complementary inquiry activities. It is proposed that the inquiry activities presented in science textbooks be examined, and the framework to evaluate inquiry activities be reflected on the standard of science textbook authorization for development of the science textbook to accord with aims and objectives of curriculum.

Mediated Public Diplomacy and the Contest Over International Agenda-Building in the Gulf Diplomatic Crisis

  • Drawing on the theories of mediated public diplomacy, intermedia agenda-building, and homophily, this study aims to compare the effectiveness of the public diplomacy efforts made by the Saudi and Qatari governments during the Gulf diplomatic crisis. The study examines the respective international agenda-building influence of the state-sponsored media from the two competing Gulf states on the regional and international media's coverage of the crisis. Results show that, compared to Saudisponsored Al Arabiya, Qatari-sponsored Al Jazeera was more effective in shaping the agendas of the regional and international media. Whereas Al Arabiya has a weak first-level agenda-building influence and a moderate-to-strong influence at the second and the third levels, Al Jazeera demonstrates a strong agenda-building influence on the foreign media outlets at all of the three levels. We also analyze the impact of political proximity and the language of the media content (English or Arabic) on the agenda-building relationships. Still, the results suggest that, compared to Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera was more successful in shaping the agendas of the regional and international news media-no matter where they are based in the allied or the opposing countries. Also, we observe a higher level of consistency between Arabic- and English-language content in Al Jazeera.

Quality Classification and Its Application Based on Certification Standards of Kentucky Bluegrass(Poa pratensis L.) Seed (켄터키 블루그래스(Poa pratensis L.) 종자의 보증 기준에 따른 품질 분류와 적용)

  • The purpose of seed certification is to preserve the genetic purity and identity of seed varieties. This study is to provide information concerning seed certification procedures and certification standards of Kentucky bluegrass especially used in golf courses. We analyzed data from the seed certification standards of three states (Washington, Idaho and Oregon) in U.S.A. The certification processes both field inspection and laboratory requirement satisfying the minimum seed quality standards. The seed harvesting field must be propagated with the specified class of seeds and requires an adequate isolated distance from other crops. Moreover, the field should be clean and free from the objectionable weeds. The seed analysis tests include a germination rate, a percentage of pure seed, contents of other crop seed, weed seed, and inert matter. The certification standards of the certified seed and the sod quality seed showed general similarity in all three states. The certification standards of the sod quality seed should have less than 0.02% of maximum weed seed. The certified seed should have less than 0.3% of maximum weed seeds. Those certification standards of seed quality should guaranty the quality of turfgrass establishment of golf course.
