A method of analysis of the steady-state performance of induction motor with supply voltage controlled by cyclically-triggered inline thyristors is presented. Phase-variable model and asymmetrical components are not used in this analysis. Instead, Fast Fourier Transform technique and the method of multiple reference frames are employed to obtain the constant-speed performance of I.M. easily.

This paper aims to compare the performance of three phase induction motor drives using Five Leg Inverter (FLI) and Three Leg Inverter (TLI) configurations. An Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) method using a TLI is well established and incorporated for high performance speed drives in various industries. The FLI dual motor drive system on the other hand shows good workability in the independent control of two induction motor drives simultaneously. In this experiment, the IFOC method is utilized for both drive systems, and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) is used to generate pulses for both inverters. For the FLI, the Double Zero Sequence (DZS) Injection technique is used to generate the modulation signal. The complete experiment setup is done by using a DSpace 1103 controller board. The individual motor performances are analyzed using similar schemes, equipment setups and controller parameter values. The results show similar speed performance response capability between the single motor operation using a TLI system and the two motor operation using a FLI system based on the variable speed range either in forward or reverse operation. They also show similar load rejection abilities. However, the single motor with a TLI has a better power quality aspect such as ripple current and total harmonics distortion (THD).
This paper describes the various characteristics of voltage sags which can affect the functions of three-phase induction motors that are mostly used in the power distribution systems. These assorted characteristics include motor speed losses, voltage recovery, motor reacceleration, and transient characteristics. An experimental study on the induction motor behaviors was also carried out to confirm these impacts. In addition sequential voltage sags with short durations were considered and investigated. The results show that the occurrence of the second voltage sag after the first one may affects the induction motor adversely.

This paper presents a novel approach based on the loci of instantaneous symmetrical components called "Wing Shape" which requires the measurement of three input stator currents and voltages to diagnose interturn insulation faults in three phase induction motors operating under different loading conditions. In this methodology, the effect of unbalanced supply conditions, constructional imbalances and measurement errors are also investigated. The sizes of the wings determine the loading on the motor and the travel of the wings while their areas determine the degree of severity of the faults. This approach is also applied to detect open circuit faults or single phasing conditions in induction motors. In order to validate this method, experimental results are presented for a 5 hp squirrel cage induction motor. The proposed technique helps improve the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the motor system and industrial plant. It also allows maintenance to be performed in a more efficient manner, since the course of action can be determined based on the type and severity of the fault.

In this paper conventional technique will be described, which can be used for the measuring various parameters of induction motor. This is followed by presenting some other, alternative, techniques. The two tests are described which are suitable to obtain the electrical parameters of symmetrical 1hp three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor. These are the blocked rotor test and no load test. By the application of these, it is possible to determine the parameters which are presented in the steady-state equivalent-circuit of determining an induction motor. One conventional method of determining the inertia of an induction motors is obtained by performing retardation tests. The angular rotor speed of the motor is monitored, following its disconnection from the stator supply. Since the inertia torque J dw/dt contains the inertia coefficient J and the friction and windage torque Bw contains the coefficient B, then J and B can be determined by performing retardation tests.

While the matrix converter has many advantages that include bi-directional power flow, a size reduction, a long lifetime, and sinusoidal input currents, it is vulnerable to the input voltage disturbances, because it directly exchanges the input voltage to the output voltage. So, in this paper, a critical evaluation of the effect of various abnormal voltage conditions like unbalanced power supply, balanced non-sinusoidal power supply, input voltage sags and short time blackout of power supply on matrix converter fed induction motor drives is presented. The operation under various abnormal conditions has been analyzed. For this, a 230V, 250VA three phase to three phase matrix converter (MC) fed induction motor drive prototype is implemented using DSP based controller and tests have been carried out to evaluate and improve the stability of system under typical abnormal conditions. Digital storage oscilloscope & power quality analyzer are used for experimental observations.
A method which improves the efficiency of induction motor by controlling the input voltage by the three phase AC voltage controller is studied at the sides of theory and practice. At first, the principle of decreasing the input power and improving the efficiency by adjusting the amplitude of the input voltage according to the load rate is shown. Secondarily, the mathematical model of the three phase AC voltage controller-induction motor system is drived to translate the dynamic characteristics. The validity of the dynamic model is verified by simulation. The new driving method is also proposed, which regulates the rated speed's driving by the speed estimation from the firing angle and the magnitude reverse induced-voltage information. As a result, the digital control system is constructed. Expermintal results show desirable characteristics of proposed system.
This paper presents a multi-objective optimization approach to design rotor slot geometry of three-phase squirrel cage induction machine to achieve NEMA design D torque-speed (T-S) characteristics with high efficiency. The multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) algorithm combined with the adaptive response surface method and Latin hypercube sampling strategy is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal designs. In order to demonstrate the validity of the suggested optimal algorithm, an application to rotor slot design of three-phase induction motor is presented.
