  • In the finite element analysis of metal forming Processes using general Lagrangian formulation, element nodes in the mesh move and elements are distorted as the material is deformed. The excessive degeneracy of mesh interrupts finite element analysis and thus increases the error of plastic deformation energy, In this study, a remeshing scheme using so-called mesh compression method is proposed to effectively analyze the flash which is generated usually in hot forging processes. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, several examples are tested in two-dimensional and three-dimensional problems.

  • A two dimensional model of linearly elastic soil spring used for the settlement analysis of the flexible mat foundation is suggested in this study. The spring constants of the soils underneath the foundation were modeled assuming uniformly vertical load applied onto the foundation. The soil spring constants were back calculated using the three-dimensional finite element analysis with Midas GTS NX program. Variation of the soil spring constants was modeled as a two-dimensional polynomial function in terms of the normalized spatial distances between the center of foundation and the analytical points. The Lysmer's analog spring for soils underneath the rigid foundation was adopted and calibrated for the flexible foundation. For validations, the newly proposed soil spring model was incorporated into a two dimensional finite difference analysis for a square mat foundation at the surface of an elastic half-space consisting of soft clays. Comparative study was made for elastic soils where the shear wave velocity is 120~180 m/s and the Poisson's ratio varies at 0.3~0.5. The resulting foundation settlements from the two dimensional finite difference analysis with the proposed soil springs were found in good agreement with those obtained directly from three dimensional finite element analyses. Details of the applications and limitations of the modified Lysmer's analog springs were discussed in this study.

  • In this paper, we apply a three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method to simulate an unsteady-state roll forming process. A typical roll forming process is investigated from the standpoint of computer simulation and its realistic analysis model is proposed. The material is considered as bulk material and discretized into hexahedral finite elements. The presented approach is applied to simulating the roll forming process of straight stringer used for aircraft structure.

  • Three dimensional numerical model based on the finite element method(FEM) were developed to predict the mechanical behavior of hip implants. The purpose of this study is to investigate the stress distribution of two types of cementless total hip replacement femoral component -a straight stem and a curved stem, and to compare their effect on the stress shielding between two types by three dimensional finite element method. The authors analyzed von Mises stress in the cortex & stem and compared the stress between the straight and the curved stem. In comparison of stresses between two different design of femoral stem, there was 25% more decrease of stress in straight stem than curved stem in the medial cortex at proximal region. The straight stem had consistently much lower stresses than the curved stem throughout the whole medial cortex with maximum 70% reduction of stress. However, there was little change in stress between nature and 2 implanted femur throughout the lateral cortex. Stress of femoral stem was much higher in the straight stem than the curved stem up to 60%. The straight stem had more chance of stress shielding and a risk of fatigue fracture of the stem compared with the curved stem in noncement hip arthroplasty. In design of femoral stem still we have to consider to develop design to distribute more even stress on the proximal medial cortex.

  • In the present study, a three-dimensional least square/level set based two-phase flow code was developed for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems using finite element discretization. The present method can be utilized for the analysis of a free surface flow problem in a complex geometry due to the feature of FEM. Since the finite element method is employed for the spatial discretization of governing equations, an unstructured mesh can be naturally adopted for the level set simulation of a free surface flow without an additional load for the code development except that solution methods of the hyperbolic type redistancing and advection equations of the level set function should be devised in order to give a bounded solution on the unstructured mesh. From the numerical experiments of the present study, it is shown that the proposed method is both robust and accurate for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of three different oblique mechanical loading to occlusal surfaces of posterior implant partial dentures on the stress distributions in surrounding bone, using 3-dimensional finite element method. A 3-dimensional finite element model of a posterior implant partial dentures composed of three unit implants, simplified 3 gold alloy crown and supporting bone was developed according to the design of AVANA self tapping implant for this study. Three kinds of surface distributed oblique loads(300 N) are applied to following occlusal surfaces in the three crowns; 1) All occlusal surfaces in the three crown(load of 300 N was shared to three crown), 2) Occlusal surface of centered crown (load of 300 N was applied to a centered crown), 3) Occlusal surface of proximal crown(load of 300 N was applied to a distal proximal crown). In the results, 141 MPa of maximum von Mises stress was calculated at third loading condition and 98 MPa of minimum von Mises stress was calculated at first loading condition. From the results, location and type of occlusive loading conditions are important for the safety of supporting bone.

  • In this paper, a good quality mesh generation for the finite element method is investigated for artificial hip joint simulations. In general, bad meshes with a large aspect ratio or mixed elements can give rise to excessively long computational running times and extremely high errors. Typically, hexahedral elements outperform tetrahedral elements during three-dimensional contact analysis using the finite element method. Therefore, it is essential to mesh biologic structures with hexahedral elements. Four meshing schemes for the finite element analysis of an artificial hip joint are presented and compared: (1) tetrahedral elements, (2) wedge and hexahedral elements, (3) open cubic box hexahedral elements, and (4) proposed hexahedral elements. The proposed meshing scheme is to partition a part before seeding so that we have a high quality three-dimensional mesh which consists of only hexahedral elements. The von Mises stress distributions were obtained and analyzed. We also performed mesh refinement convergence tests for all four cases.

  • In this work, rapid prototyping and three-dimensional finite element analysis are simultaneously applied to the die design of metal forming processes. Rapid prototyping is a new prototyping technology which produces three-dimensional part models directly from CAD data and has been extensively applied to various manufacturing processes. There are many types of rapid prototyping systems due to their building principles and materials. In this work, Stereolithography Apparatus(SLA), which is the most widely used rapidprototyping system, is introduced to manufacture the die set. For general preparation of STL file, which is the standard input file of rapid prototyping system, mesh data which are used in describing the die surface in finite element analysis are translated so that rapid prototyping and finite element analysis are dffectively connected. A die set for spider forging and a clover punch for deep drawing section are manufactured effciently using SLA prototypes, and metal forming experiments are carried out using them. Comparing the result of experiments with that of analyses, the processes can be predicted and designed successfully.

  • Preflex beam is a method of construction to hold the Pre-compressive stresses over the concrete pier by the Preflexion load. During the fabrication of the girder, welding causes the welding residual stresses. The welding residual stresses must be relieved to generate the accurate compressive pre-stresses that is designed. On this study, to find out the thermal distribution characteristics on the girder by welding, both the three-dimensional finite element analysis and the two-dimensional finite element analysis in a quasi-steady state is carried out. After comparing with each result between the three-dimensional analysis and the two-dimensional analysis, finite element analysis is carried out against the actual girder and analyze welding thermal distribution characteristic over the preflex beam and obtain the input data for the analysis of the welding residual stresses.
