In this paper the stress redistribution around tunnel face was analyzed by using a three-dimensional finite element model. The effects of in-situ stress levels, excavation sequences, stiffness difference between the hard ground and the weak zone on the stress redistributions were considered. Displacement and stress changes at tunnel crown, side wall, and invert were investigated throughout the sequential excavation. To show ground response, percentage of the displacement and stress variations are used as a function of normalized distance that is between the face and monitoring section. Preceding displacements and stress variations were presented to be adopted in the two-dimensional tunnel analysis.
The cold formed light-gauge profiled steel sheeting can offer considerable shear resistance acting in the steel building frame. This paper conducted the full-scale test on the shear behavior of stressed skin diaphragm using profiled sheeting connected by the self-tapping screws. A three-dimensional finite element model that simulates the stressed skin diaphragm was developed. The sheet was modeled using thin element model while the supporting members were simulated using beam elements. Fasteners were represented in the numerical model as equivalent springs. A joint test program was conducted to characterize the properties of these springs and results were reported in this study. Finite element model of the full-scale test was analyzed by use of the ANSYS package, considering nonlinearity caused by the large deflection and slip of fasteners. The experimental data was compared with the results acquired by the EUR formulas and finite element analysis.
This study is to analyze the stress and displacement on the jaws during the bilateral and unilateral clenching task on three dimensional finite element model of the dentated skull. For this study, the computed tomography(G.E.8800 Quick, USA) was used to scan the total length of human skull in the frontal plane at 1.9mm intervals. The CAD data were extracted from the tomograms through digitizer(Summa Sketch III, USA) and then reconstructed by means of the spline method in the CAD program. In this project, a commercial software I-DEAS(Master Series ver-sion 3.0, SDRC Inc, USA) was used for three-dimensional stress analysis on the finite element model. which consists of articular disc, maxilla, mandible, teeth, periodontal ligament and cranium. The results are as follows. ; 1. During the bilateral clenching, each major muscle forces caused high stresses on various areas of skull: masseter muscle on articular disc and teeth ; temporal muscle on mandible and periodontal ligament ; medial pterygoid muscle on the temporomandibular joint. During the unilateral clenching, masseter muscle induced the maximum stress ; medial pterygoid muscle the minimum stress. 2. During the bilateral clenching, higher compressive stresses on articular disc were generated by the masseter muscle and higher deformation occurred on the most front outer sites. And during the unilateral clenching, temporal muscle and medial pterygoid muscle exerted their forces to twist temporomandibular joint area of the balancing side and induced a higher compressive stresses on the front outer sites of articular disc. 3. During the bilateral clenching, the masseter muscle bended the mandible outwardly, and then caused tensile stresses on the lingual surface of mandibular symphysis. And the medial pterygoid muscle caused tensile stresses on the labial surface of mandibular symphysis. 4. When each muscles were simultaneously applied on jaws, a high stress and displacement took place on mandible rather than on the maxilla. Also, a high stress and displacement took place during the unilateral clenching rather than during the bilateral clenching.
Finite element analysis for induction heating process including magnetic and thermal situations is presented. Because magnetic and thermal material properties vary with the temperature, material properties depending on temperature are considered. As the inductor moves, the solution domains corresponding to the inductor change into those of the air and the solution domains corresponding to the air change into those of the inductor. For these reasons, modeling of induction heating process is very difficult with a general purpose commercial programs. In this paper, three dimensional analysis of induction heating process for moving inductor is analyzed using moving coordinate. The skin effect is confirmed inside the steel plate in the electro-magnetic analysis. The distribution of heat generation at the initial state is different from that at the quasi-stationary state. Therefore, material properties depending on temperature must be considered. The calculated results of finite element analysis agree well with the experimental temperature results. This approach is suitable to solve magneto-thermal coupled problems.
Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a non-contact manner, and has been recently applied to the injection molding due to its capability of rapid heating and cooling of mold surface. The present study covers a three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate heating efficiency and structural safety of the induction heating process of an injection mold. To simulate the induction heating process, an integrated simulation method is proposed by effectively connecting an electromagnetic field analysis, a transient heat transfer analysis and a thermal stress analysis. The estimated temperature changes are compared with experimental measurements for various types of induction coil, from which heating efficiency according to the coil shape is discussed. The resulting thermal stress distributions of the mold plate for various types of induction coils are also evaluated and discussed in terms of the structural safety.
In this paper, nonlinear static analysis of three-dimensional cable stayed bridges is performed for the time dependent materials properties such as creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete and relaxation of cable. Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge is selected as an application. The bridge located in Antalya, Turkey, was constructed with balanced cantilever construction method. Total length of the bridge is 202 m. The bridge consists of one $\ddot{e}$ shape steel tower. The tower is at the middle of the bridge span. The construction stages and 3D finite element model of bridge are modeled with SAP2000. Large displacement occurs in these types of bridges so geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis by using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Two different finite element analyses carried out which are evaluated with and without construction stages and results are compared with each other. As a result of these analyses, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge tower and displacement and bending moment for bridge deck are given with detailed. It is seen that construction stage analysis has a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.
Shape memory alloys (SMA) have interesting features which are the superelastic effect (SE), shape memory effect (SME), two-way SME (TWSME), and so on. These are utilized in actuation factor. The thermo-mechanical constitutive equations of SMA proposed by Lagoudas et al. were employed in the present study for simulating SMA truss structures. The constitutive equation includes the necessary internal variables to account for the material transformations and is utilized in the non-linear finite element procedure of three dimensional truss structures that composed SMA bar (wholly or partially). In this study, we observed which element should be actuated to get a desired shape (actuation shape) from computational analysis. To reach this goal, we apply SMA constitutive equation to non-linear finite element formulation. And then, we simulate two-way shape memory effect as well as superelastic effect of various three dimensional truss using SMA.
A terminal pin, which is a part of high-voltage capacitors, has a plate-shaped head section with thickness of 0.8mm. The current manufacturing process, in which the head section is welded on the body part, has given wide deviations of part qualities such as geometrical accuracy, mechanical strength and electrical stability. In this study, a cold forging process sequence was designed in order to produce the terminal pin as one piece. The plate-shaped head section requires an upsetting in the lateral direction of a cylindrical billet, which is followed by a blanking process. The deformed geometry of the lateral upsetting, however, could not be predicted precisely by intuition since metal flows of an axial and a lateral direction of the cylindrical billet would occur simultaneously. Therefore, in this study, three dimensional finite element analyses were applied to the lateral upsetting process in order to determine a proper diameter and height of the cylindrical billet. Once the geometry of the initial billet was determined, intermediate forging processes were designed by applying cold forging guidelines and the designed process sequence was verified by two dimensional finite element analysis. In addition, cold forging tryouts were conducted by using a die set, which was manufactured based on the designed process and finally we found that the part qualities were improved by the proposed cold forging process.
The reinforced concrete slab is one of main structure members in the construction industry sector. However, most of researches regarding to RC slabs have been focused on two-dimensional Mindlin-type plate element on the basis of laminated plate theory since three-dimensional solid element has a lot of difficulties in finite element formulation and costs in CPU time. In reality, the RC slabs are subjected to dynamic loads like a heavy traffic vehicle load, and thus should insure the safety from the static load as well as dynamic load. Once we can estimate the dynamic behaviour of RC slabs exactly, it will be very helpful for design of it. In this study, the 20-node solid element has been used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of RC slabs with clamped edges. The elasto-visco plastic model for material non-linearity and the smeared crack model have been adopted in the finite element formulation. The applicability of the proposed finite element has been tested for dynamic behaviour of RC slabs with respect to characteristics of concrete materials in terms of cracking stress, crushing strain, fracture energy and Poisson's ratio. The effect on dynamic behaviour is dependent on not crushing strain but cracking stress, fracture energy and Poisson's ratio. In addition to this, it is shown the damping phenomenon of RC slabs has been identified from the numerical results by using Rayleigh damping.
An analytical method to predict the flexural behavior of composite girder is presented in which the early-age properties of concrete are specified including maturing of elastic modulus, creep and shrinkage. The time dependent constitutive relation accounting for the early-age concrete properties is derived in an incremental format by expanding the total form of stress-strain relation by the first order Taylor series with respect to the reference time. The sectional analysis calculates the axial and curvature strains based on the force and moment equilibriums. The deflection curve of the box girder approximated by the quadratic polynomial function is calculated by applying to the proper boundary conditions in the consecutive segments. Numerical applications are made for the 3-span double composite steel box girders which is a composite bridge girder filled with concrete at the bottom of the steel box in the negative moment region. The one dimensional finite element analysis results are compared with those of the three dimensional finite element analysis and the analytical method based on the sectional analysis. Close agreement is observed among the three methods.
