This paper presents the effect of tunneling on bridge pile foundation being operated using three-dimensional numerical modeling. Also the parametric study on the depth of tunnel of which the diameter was 10 m was carried out in order to evaluate the behaviors of pile foundation due to the tunnel excavation. This paper expresses the changes of vertical and horizontal displacement, movement of soil and stress of the pile. Based on the results obtained from the numerical analysis some insights into the changes of pile foundation behaviors due to variations of tunneling location were mentioned and discussed.
The pipelines are apt to erosion or corrosion because of the high-speed flow of water and steam with high temperatures or high pressures. This study was carried out a finite element analysis (FEA) and an experimental for the fracture behavior of T-joint pipes with local wall thinning under internal pressure. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion and corrosion of the metal. The configurations of the eroded area included an eroded ratio of d/t=0.80~0.963 and an eroded length of l=25 mm, 50 mm, and 102 mm. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analyses were also carried out using FEA, which accurately simulates failure behaviors. In regards to the relationship between pressure and eroded, the criterion that indicates what can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained from FEA. The FEA results were in relatively good agreement with that of the experiment.
Thermal stress-induced failure in the free edge region of various thin carbon/epoxy composite laminates(1mm thick) has been investigated using the three-dimensional finite-element stress analysis, ultrasonic C-scan and microscopic observations. High thermal in-plane and interlaminar stresses were predicted in the interior layer near the free edge boundaries of the laminates. In the interior lamina, not in the skin lamina, of the thin laminates with lay-up of $[0_2/90_2]_s,\;[45_2/-45_0]_s,\;[0_2/60_2]_s$ treated by liquid $N_2$ immersion, many transverse matrix cracks took place due to thermal stress concentration, which agreed qualitatively with the above predictions.

Particles reinforced MMCs have many advantages over monolithic metals including a higher specific modulus, higher specific strength, better properties at elevated temperatures and better wear resistance. SiC$_p$/A16061 composites have good results in its mechanical properties. This work investigates SiC$_p$/A16061 composites in the microscopic view and compares the analytical results with the experimental ones. The discrepancy of the material properties between the reinforced particle, SiC$_p$, and the matrix material, A16061 appears to be so significant. Especially the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of A16061 is 5 times larger than that of SiC$_p$. Thermal residual stress in MMCs is induced at high temperatures. The shape of particle is various but the theoretical model is not able to consider the nonuniform shape. Particle distribution is not homogeneous in experimental specimen. However, it is assumed to be homogeneous in simulation model. The shapes of particles are assumed to be not only perfect global but hexahedral shapes. The types of particle distribution are two - simple cubic array(SC array) and face-centered cubic array(FCC array).

In this study, nonlinear crash analyses have been conducted for the skid landing gear of a helicopter. The realistic landing gear model of the commercial helicopter (SB427) is considered. Three-dimensional dynamic finite element model with variable thickness and material plastic behavior is constructed and LS-DYNA(Ver.970) is used to conduct nonlinear transient crash analyses for different impact conditions. Characteristics of nonlinear transient responses due to the ground crash are investigated for typical structural design criteria of a skid landing gear system. In addition, comparison results for maximum crash deformations of the skid landing gear are presented and the important effect of ground friction for numerical accuracy is described.

In current research, it was attempted a preliminary design and evaluation of non-uniform ultra high-strength concrete (UHSC) truss members. UHSC used here has the compressive strength of 180 MPa, the tensile strength of 8 to 20 MPa, and the tensile strain after cracks up to 2%. By the three-dimensional finite element stress analysis as well as strut-tie approach on concrete solid beams, the non-uniform truss shape of UHSC truss was designed with the architectural esthetic concept. In a series of examples, to compare with conventional concrete members, the proposed UHSC truss members have advantages in capabilities of the slender design with minimum weight with high performances under transverse loadings as well as the aesthetically non-uniform design for spatial structures.

Air-cored superconducting synchronous generator(ASSG) is characterized by an air-cored machine with its rotor iron and stator iron teeth removed. For this reason, in the case of the shape optimum design of ASSG, other design variables different from an iron-cored machine should be considered, which will lead to substantial improvement on the performance. The major design variables that are considered by using Three-dimensional Finite element Method(3D FEM) in this paper are : 1) field coil width, 2) axial length of magnetic shield, and 3) armature winding method. End-ring of armature winding is considered in the calculation of EMF. When it comes to field coil width, as field coil width enlarges, its effective field increases but the maximum field on the superconductor decreases. this determines the critical current density. this study presents an effective field coil width, axial length of magnetic shield, and armature winding method, and also the analysis is verified by the experimental results.

The softening behaviors of concrete have been the object of numerous experimental and numerical studies, because the load carrying capacity of cracked concrete structure is not zero. Numerical studies are devoted to the investigation of three-dimensional softening behaviors of concrete on the basis of a viscoplastic theory, which may be able to represent the effects of plasticity and also of rheology. In order to properly describe material behaviors corresponding to different stress levels, two surfaces in stress space are adopted; one is a yield surface, and the other is a failure or bounding surface. When a stress path reaches the failure surface, it is considered that the softening behaviors are initiated as micro-cracks coalesce and are simulated by assuming that the actual strain increments in the post-peak region are less than the equivalent viscoplastic strain increment. The experimental studies and the finite element analyses have been carried out under the displacement control. Numerically simulated results indicate that the model is able to predict the essential characteristics of concrete behaviors such as the non-linearity, stiffness degradation, different behaviors in tension and compression, and specially dilatation under uniaxial compression.

This paper presents a study on the nonlinear behavior of an innovative bridge girder made from concrete-filled and tied tubular steel arch (CFTA) under static loading. Manufacturing of the CFTA girder may have defects which may highly affect the symmetry and performance of the structure. A simple method is proposed by using stiffness extracted from static test data to detect manufacturing defects of the CFTA girder. A three-dimensional finite element model was used in the numerical analysis in order to verify the method. The proposed method was experimentally validated through static tests of the CFTA girder. The application of the proposed method showed that it is effective in identifying invisible manufacturing defects of the CFTA girder, especially for mass production of a standard type in the factory.
The magnitude and distribution of tunnel deformation were widely discussed topics in tunnel engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element program was used for the analysis of various horseshoe-shaped opening expressway tunnels under different geologies. Two rock material models - Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown were executed in the process of analyses; and the results show that the magnitude and distribution of tunnel deformation were close by these two models. The tunnel deformation behaviors were relevant to many factors such as cross-sections and geological conditions; but the geology was the major factor to the normalized longitudinal deformation profile (LDP). If the time-dependent factors were neglected, the maximum displacements were located at the distance of 3 to 4 tunnel diameters behind the excavation face. The ratios of displacement at the excavation face to the maximum displacement were around 1/3 to 1/2. In general, the weaker the rock mass, the larger the ratio. The displacements in front of the excavation face were decreased with the increasement of distance. At the distance of 1.0 to 1.5 tunnel diameter, the displacements were reduced to one-tenth of the maximum displacement.
