The objective of this paper is to present the element connectivity parameterization (ECP) fur three dimensional problems. In the ECP method, a continuum structure is viewed as discretized finite elements connected by zero-length elastic links whose stiffness values control the degree of inter-element connectivity. The ECP method can effectively avoid the formation of the low-density unstable elements. These elements appear when the standard element density method is used for geometrical nonlinear problems. In this paper, this ECP method developed fur two-dimensional problems is expanded to the design of three-dimensional geometrical nonlinear structures. Among others, the automatic procedure converting standard finite element models to the models suitable for the ECP approach is developed and applied for optimization problems defined on general three-dimensional design domains.
Many analysis methods, including finite element method, have been suggested and used for assessing the integrity of cracked structures. In the paper, in order to analyze arbitrarily shaped three dimensional cracks in an infinite body, the finite element alternating method is extended. The cracks are modeled as a distribution of displacement discontinuities by the displacement discontinuity method and the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. Applied the proposed method to several example problems for planner cracks in finite bodies, the accuracy and efficiency of the method were demonstrated.
The backward tracing scheme of the finite element analysis, which is counted to be unique and useful for process design in metal forming, has been developed and applied successfully in industry to several metal forming processes. Here the backward tracing scheme is implemented for process design of three-dimensional plastic deformation in metal forming, and it is applied to a precision coining process. The contact problem between the die and workpiece has been treated carefully during backward tracing simulation in three-dimensional deformation. The results confirm that the application of the developed program implemented with backward tracing scheme of the rigid plastic finite element leads to a reasonable initial piercing hole configuration. It is concluded that three-dimensional extension of the scheme appears to be successful for industrial applications.

As the structure of the piezoelectric bimorph cantilever becomes increasingly more complicated, a more accurate and efficient analysis of piezoelectric media is needed. In this paper, the piezoelectric transducer is analyzed by using the three-dimensional finite element method. The validity of the three-dimensional finite element routine is confirmed by comparing the experimental result. The resonance characteristics, such as resonance frequency and anti-resonance frequency, of the piezoelectric cantilever are calculated by the experimentally verified three dimensional finite element method. Subsequently, the characteristics, such as mechanical displacement and impedance, are calculated at the resonance frequency. Besides, to design the piezoelectric bimorph cantilever shape that maximizes displacement at the tip, the ES (Evolution Strategy) algorithm is applied. Finally, optimal design for the fan of the piezoelectric cantilever is fulfilled to obtain maximum displacement at the tip. From these results, the application potentiality of the piezoelectric bimorph cantilever fan is identified.
The present work is concerned with three-dimensional finite element analysis of the hollow section extrusion process using a porthole die. For economic computation, mismatching refinement, an efficient domain decomposition method with different mesh density for each subdomain, is implemented. The proposed method improves the computational efficiency significantly, especially fur the three-dimensional analysis of extrusion problems. As a numerical example, extrusion of the underframe part of a railroad vehicle are analyzed. For three-dimensional mesh generation of a complicated shape with hexahedral elements, a modified grid-based approach with the surface element layer is utilized. The analysis results are then successfully reflected on the industrial porthole die design.
Even though the relative importance of length scale of flow system allow us to simplify three dimensional flow problem to one or two dimensional representation, many systems still require three dimensional analysis. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model for analyzing and predicting three dimensional flow features in natural rivers and to offend to model spreading of pollutants and transport of sediments in the future. Firstly, three dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the hydrostatic pressure assumption in generalized curvilinear coordinates were combined with the kinematic free-surface condition. Secondly. to simulate realistic high Reynolds number flow, the model employed the Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme as a weighting function for the finite element method in conjunction with an appropriate turbulence model(Smagorinsky scheme for the horizontal plain and Mellor-Yamada scheme for the vertical direction). Several tests is performed for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. A simple rectangular channel, 5-shaped and U-shaped channel are used for tests and comparisons are made with RMA-10 model. Runs for each case is converged stably without a oscillation and calculated water-surface deformation, longitudinal and transversal velocities, and velocity vector fields are in good agreement with the results of RMA-10 model.
Deformation behavior of pure aluminum during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was simulated using a three-dimensional version of the finite element method in conjunction with a constitutive model based on the dislocation density and cell evolution. The three-dimensional finite element analyses for the prediction of microstructural features, such as the variation of the dislocation density and the cell size with the number of ECAP, are reported. The calculated stress and strain and their distributions are also investigated for the route Bc ECAP processed pure aluminum. The results of finite element analyses are found to be in good agreement with experimental results for the dislocation cell size. Due to the accumulation of strain throughout the workpiece and an overall trend to saturation in cell size, a decrease of the difference in cell size with the number of passes (1~4) was predicted.
A lot of researches have been performed on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) which produces ultra-fine grains. Along with the experiments, the finite element method has been widely employed to investigate the deformation behavior of specimen during ECAP and the effects of process parameters of ECAP. In this paper, pure-Zirconium is considered for ECAP process by using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The results have been compared with those of previous two-dimensional analysis and with the experimental results
As an improvement on the isoparametric element method, the derivation presented in this paper is close to that done by Wang (1990) for the 2-D finite element. We extend this idea to solve 3-D crack problems in this paper. A new displacement modelling is constructed with local solutions of three-dimensional cracks and a quasi-compatible isoparametric element for three-dimensional fracture mechanics analysis is presented. The stress intensity factors can be solved directly by means of the present method without any post-processing. A new method for calculating the stress intensity factors of three-dimensional cracks with complex geometries and loads is obtained. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity of the present method. The accuracy of the results obtained by the proposed element is demonstrated by solving several crack problems. The results illustrate that this method not only saves much calculating time but also increases the accuracy of solutions. Because this quasi-compatible finite element of 3-D cracks contains any singularities and easily meets the requirement of compatibility, it can be easily implemented and incorporated into existing finite element codes.
In this paper, nonsteady state shaped drawing process has been investigated using the three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method. In order to analyze the shaped drawing process, a method to define straight converging die considering straight die part, die radius part and bearing part has been proposed. In addition, the modeling of initial billet and the generation procedure of mesh system have been suggested. The three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element simulation has been performed for a square sectional drawing process and its result has been confirmed in comparison with the existing experimental one. Also, for the same process conditions, the effect of perimeter ratio in the shaped drawing process has been investigated.
