When applying superconducting wire to power machines, an investigation needs to be carried out on the characteristics of wire phase changes in connection with the insulating layer. This study examined trends in the increase of the wire's resistance and the characteristics of its recovery from quenching by a current-applied cycle at temperatures of 90 K, 180 K, and 250 K. The procedure was conducted based on the thickness and presence (or absence) of the insulating wire layers. To achieve this, YBCO thin-film wires with the same critical temperatures were prepared with copper and stainless steel stabilizing layers. At levels (-one, three, and five-), with superior performance, polyimide pressure-sensitive adhesive tape was attached to the wires at a very low temperature. The eight prepared test samples were wound around the linear frames. The wire's voltage and current created from the phase change characteristics were measured at the wire's prescribed temperature, using the four-point probe method. The wire's resistance and recovery characteristics were examined for each cycle at temperatures of 90 K, 180 K, and 250 K.
In home appliances, electric energy is optimally controlled by using power electronics technology, creating a comfortable environment in terms of energy saving, low sound generation, and reduced time consumption. Usually simplicity and robustness make the three phase induction motor attractive for use in domestic appliance, including washing machines. Two main fpes of domestic washing machine have evolved. We focus on the front loading machine favored in Europe, which has a horizontal drum axis. With the advent of electronic control, universal motor, with a phase controller operating directly from the ac source, has become popular in washing machine. The efficiency improvement in home appliances is very important for customers. Induction motor efficiency can be improved by means of loss reduction, which can be realized by motor selection and design, improvement of the waveforms supplied by power inverter, utilizing a suitable control method. So this paper describes the architecture and feature of washing machine fed induction motor drive under minimizing losses vector control.
The prediction of protein secondary structure has been an important bioinformatics tool that is an essential component of the template-based protein tertiary structure prediction process. It has been known that the predicted secondary structure information improves both the fold recognition performance and the alignment accuracy. In this paper, we describe several novel ideas that may improve the prediction accuracy. The main idea is motivated by an observation that the protein's structural information, especially when it is combined with the evolutionary information, significantly improves the accuracy of the predicted tertiary structure. From the non-redundant set of protein structures, we derive the 'potential' parameters for the protein secondary structure prediction that contains the structural information of proteins, by following the procedure similar to the way to derive the directional information table of GOR method. Those potential parameters are combined with the frequency matrices obtained by running PSI-BLAST to construct the feature vectors that are used to train the support vector machines (SVM) to build the secondary structure classifiers. Moreover, the problem of huge model file size, which is one of the known shortcomings of SVM, is partially overcome by reducing the size of training data by filtering out the redundancy not only at the protein level but also at the feature vector level. A preliminary result measured by the average three-state prediction accuracy is encouraging.
Shipbuilding process is composed of hull construction, in which the structural body of a ship is formed, and outfitting, in which all the non-structural parts such as pipes, derricks, engines, machinery, electrical cable, etc. are manufactured, added and assembled. Hull construction can be classified into parts fabrication, block assembly and hull erection. Among them, the parts fabrication is the first manufacturing stage that produces components or zones needed for block assembly and hull construction. More specifically, the parts fabrication is performed through machining processes including marking, cutting, pressing, and/or forming. When material is entering into the parts fabrication stage, it is important for achieving the total efficiency of production to select one of production division, so-called 'bay,' as well as machine tools on which the part is fabricated. In this paper, given production quantities of parts in the fabrication stage, the problem is to optimally select machine tools and production division, such that the total flow-time is minimized as well as the workload among machines is balanced. Specifically, three mathematical models for flow-time minimization, load balance, and simultaneously considering both objectives, and a numerical example are analyzed and presented.
For the numerical computation of three-dimensional compressible flow field within a blade row in a centrifugal compressor, a quasi 3-dimensional solver which combines a reversible B-B flow and an irreversible H-S flow using finite element methods was developed. In a reversible B-B flow, the governing coordinates are modified in order to be applied to any type of turbomachinery, and two kinds of stream functions are introduced in order to make the Kutta condition exactly satisfied. In an irreversible H-S flow, the changes of entropy in the irreversible governing equations are determined not by empirical source but by the theoretical treatment of dissipation forces. The dissipation forces are obtained from the distribution of shear stresses in the flow passage which are given from the wall shear stresses using the exponential functions. A more accurate quasi-3-dimensional solver is established where the effect of body forces is involved in the non-axisymmetric H-S flow. Some numerical results obtained from authors' previous studies for axial flow machines assure that the present method is able to predict well as long as the flow is subsonic and not under strong viscous effect.
The electromagnetic parameters of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) such as the open load permanent magnet flux, d axis reactance $X_d$, and q axis reactance $X_q$, are most essential to the performance analysis and optimization design of the motor. Based on the numerical analysis of the 3D electromagnetic field, the three electromagnetic parameters of permanent magnet synchronous motors with U form interior rotor structures are calculated by FEA. The rules of the leakage coefficient and reactance parameters changing with the air gap length, permanent magnet magnetism length, and isolation magnetic bridge dimensions in the rotor are given. The calculated values agree well with the measured values. The FEA results are integrated with the self compiled electromagnetic design program to optimize the prototype motor. The tested performances of the prototype motor prove that the method is suitable for the optimization of motor structure.
Taking three types of bridge bearings with diameter being 100 mm as examples, the theoretical analysis, the experimental research as well as the numerical simulation of these bearings is conducted. Since the normal compression and shear machines cannot be applied to the small-size bearings, an improved equipment to test the properties of these bearings is proposed and fabricated. Besides, the simulation of the bearings is conducted based on the explicit finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, and some parameters of the bearings are modified in the finite element model to reduce the computation cost effectively. Results show that all the research methods are capable of revealing the fundamental properties of the small-size bearings, and a combined use of these methods can better catch both the integral properties and the inner detailed mechanical behaviors of the bearings.
From a viewpoint of human factors, automated highway systems(AHS) can be defined as one of the newly developing human-machine systems that consist of humans(drivers and operators), machines(vehicles and facilities), and environments(roads and roadside environments). AHS will require a changed vehicle control process and driver-vehicle interface(DVI) comparing with conventional driving. This study introduces a fixed-based AHS simulator and provides questionnaire-based human factors evaluation results after three kinds of automated driving speed experiences in terms of road configuration, operation policies, information devices, and overall AHS use. In the simulator, the "shared space-at-grade" concept-based road configuration was virtually implemented on a portion of the Kyungbu highway in Korea, and heads-up display(HUD), AHS information display, and variable message signs(VMS) were installed for appropriate AHS DVI implementation. As the results, the subjects expressed positive opinions on the implemented road configuration, operation policies, and the overall use of AHS. The results of this study would be helpful in developing the road configuration and DVI design guideline as the basic human factors research for the future implementation of AHS.

IRRI Engineering Division has developed a well drilling rig attachment that matched power tiller or hand tractor. It was designed in response to the growing demand for ground water utilization for small-scale irrigation, especially in drought-sticken and rained farms in Asian countries. The power tiller-driven rig can drill 30 meters of 100mm well in an unconsolidated formation in one day and can be rapidly converted from rotary to jetting or to the percussion method of drilling to suit different soil and rock formation. In addition, the power tiller can be quickly installed or removed from the rig frame and can be used for transporting the rig to other sites. The rig can be dismantled into smaller sub-assemblies for carrying by hand into less accessible areas. One manufacturer in Central luzon Philippines has started to produce the rig for well drillers in Central Luzon. The Department of Agriculture in the Philippines have procured thirty three(33) units of these machines f r their Shallow Tubewell program.
