Numerical study is presented for the analysis of three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in multiblade centrifugal fan. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - $\epsilon$ turbulence model are transformed to non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. The computational area is divided into three blocks; core, impeller and scroll, which are linked by multi-block method. The flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow, and mathematical formula established from the cascade theory and empirical coefficient are employed to simulate tile flow through the impeller. From comparisons between the computational results and the experimental data, the validity of the mathematical formula for the blade forces was examined and good results were obtained qualitatively. Hence, we can get the flow characteristics of multi-blade centrifugal fan and it will be a corner stone of the development of the multiblade centrifugal fan.

Turbulent flows are numerically simulated in the three dimensional inlet duct for heat recovery steam generator. The present study is aimed to analyze the effect of a variation in turbulent flow pattern by the change of roof angle in the transition duct. The finite volume based Navier-Stokes equations with unstructured grids are solved to make clear the flow dynamic phenomena. Reviews are made on with the data of path lines, velocity vectors, dynamic pressure, residuals for numerical convergence and so on. The k-epsilon, k-omega, Reynolds stress and RNG k-epsilon are used for generation of turbulence. Two types of roof angle are applied with and without the swirl in the duct. Turbulent flow patterns could be investigated for the optimum duct design based on the computational results.

Three-dimensional turbulent incompressible flow through the tip clearance of a linear turbine rotor cascade with high turning angle has been analyzed numerically. As a preliminary study to predict the tip clearance loss realistically, a generalized k-.epsilon. model derived by RNG (renormalized group) method is used for the modeling of Reynolds stresses to account for the strain rate of turbulent flow. The effects of the tip clearance flow on the passage vortex, the total pressure loss are considered qualitatively. The existences of vena contract and tip clearance vortex have been confirmed and it has been shown that as the size of the tip clearance increases, the accumulated flow through the tip clearance and the total pressure loss downstream of the cascade increase.
An experimental research has been carried out for flow control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing aeroelastic mesoflaps. Various shapes and thicknesses of the mesoflap are tested to achieve different deflections of the flap, and ail the results are compared to the solid-wall reference case without flow-control mechanism. Quantitative variation of skin friction has been measured downstream of the interactions using the laser interferometer skin friction meter, and qualitative skin friction distribution has been obtained by observing the interference fringe pattern on the oil-film surface. A strong spanwise variation in the fringe patterns with a narrow region of separation near the centerline is noticed to form behind the shock structure, which phenomenon is presumed partially related to three-dimensional flow structures associated with both the sidewalls and the bottom test surface. The effect of the shape of the cavity is also observed and it is noticed that the shape of the cavity is not negligible.

A cascade wind tunnel test for a turbine nozzle, which was designed for a small turbo jet engine in a previous study, has been conducted to evaluate its aerodynamic performance and losses. The large-scale blades were based on the mid-span profile of the nozzle. Oil film flow structure, and then 3-dimensional velocity components were measured in the flow passage with a 5-hold pressure probe, in addition to turbulent intensities at mid-span of cascade exit using a hot-wire anemometer. From this study, 3-dimensional growth of horseshoe and passage vortices in the downstream direction was clearly understood with near-wall flow phenomena. In addition, secondary flow and losses associated with the blade configuration were obtained in detail.

Computational study has been performed to observe the flow characteristics of combustion chamber for geometrical modification in municipal solid waste incinerator. A series of geometrical modification has been carried out as an attempt to reduce the size of recirculation zone, to obtain uniform flow field in the secondary combustion chamber and to improve the mixing of combustion gas. Two dimensional non-reacting turbulent flow has been studied as the first step to get such goals and the result of design optimization is presented. In addition, three dimensional non-reacting and reacting flow analyses were performed to verify the validity of two dimensional approach.
Three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow fields within the passage of the steam turbine nozzle with/without tip clearance have been simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with SIMPLE scheme. The extended k-e model is applied to modeling the Reynolds stresses. Grids in the computational domain are generated by solving the Poisson's equations to improve the smoothness and orthogonality. Flow losses, secondary flow, velocity profiles, and deviation angles are obtained. The computated results without tip clearance show good agreement with the experimental data.
In this paper, the wake structures behind a square cylinder at the Reynolds number of 22,000 are simulated using the large eddy simulation, and the main features of the wake structure associated with unsteady vortex-shedding are investigated. The Smagorinsky model is used for parametrization of the subgrid scales. The finite element method with isoparametric linear elements is employed in the computations. Unsteady computations are performed using the explicit method with streamline upwind scheme for the advection term. The time integration incorporates a subcycling strategy. No-slip condition is enforced on the wall surface. A comparative study between two-and three-dimensional computations puts a stress on the three-dimensional effects in turbulent flow simulations. Simulated three-dimensional wake structures are compared with numerical and experimental results reported by other researchers. The results include time-averaged, phase-averaged flow fields and numerically visualized vortex-shedding pattern using streaklines. The results show that dynamics of the vortex-shedding phenomenon are numerically well reproduced using the present method of finite element implementation of large eddy simulation.
Fishways are constructed to ensure the fish migration because river-crossing structures such as dams and weirs cut off the stream longitudinal connectivity and influence on aquatic ecosystems. However, the passage efficiency of fishes varies depending on flow characteristics in the fishway and fish species. In this study, three-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out using a RANS model and the volume of fluid method for resolving free surface fluctuations to calculate the turbulent flow in the pool and weir type fishway. The Flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy in the pool of fishway are analyzed according to variation of the upstream water level and the length of pool. The present numerical simulations reasonably well reproduce the stream flow and plunging flow characteristics in the pool. The simulation results show that the stream flow changes to the plunging flow as the length of the pool increases. When the upstream level increases, the stream flow becomes more evident. Key parameters related to the fish migration within the fishway such as the flow velocity and the turbulent kinetic energy are examined to assess the ascending possibility of fishes.

The turbulent buoyancy-driven flow in 2-dimensional enclosed cavities heated from the vertical side is numerically calculated for both cases of a Rayleigh number of 5*10$^{10}$ for air and 2.5*10$^{10}$ for water. Three different turbulence models are considered : standard k-.epsilon. model of Ozoe and low-Reynolds-number model of Lam and Bremhorst, and another low-Reynolds-number model of Davidson. The results indicate that the use of low-Reynolds number models is recommended for the indoor airflow computation, and the results from Davidson model are reasonably close to the reported experimental data. A sensitivity study shows that the amounts of wall-heat transfer and the velocity profiles with the Lam and Bremhorst model largely depend on the choice of the wall function for .epsilon..
