  • To investigate the flow inside the centrifugal impeller, computer program which can solve Three-dimensional compressible turbulent flow has been developed. The Navier-Stokes equations were chosen as the governing equation for viscous flow while Euler equations for inviscid case. Time marching method was incorporated with the Flux Difference Splitting method suggested by Roe to capture the steep gradients such as a shock. For high order of accuracy, MUSCL approach was adopted while differentiable limiter to ensure TVD property. For turbulence closure, Baldwin- Lomax model was applied due to its simplicity. To demonstrate the capabilities of present program, several validation problems have been solved and compared with experiments and other available data. From the above calculations generally good agreements were obtained. Finally, the developed code was applied to Eckardt's impeller and the performance prediction was carried out. Some important aspects on boundary condition for successful simulation were discussed and the remedy was also introduced.

  • Numerical simulation of air-launched rockets from a helicopter was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic interference between air-launched rocket and helicopter. For this purpose, a three-dimensional inviscid flow solver has been developed based on unstructured meshes. An overset mesh technique was used to describe the relative motion between rocket and rocket launcher. The flow solver was coupled with six degree-of-freedom equation to predict the trajectory of free-flight rockets. For the validation, calculations were made for the impinging jet with inclined plate. The rotor downwash of helicopter was calculated and applied to simulation of air-launched rocket. It is shown that the rotor downwash has non-negligible effect on the air-launched rocket and its plume development.

  • This paper describes the aerodynamic interference characteristics between the ing and the engines in a commercial airplane which is realized by reverse engineering based on the photo measurement. Steady three-dimensional compressible inviscid Euler equation is solved in the unstructured grid system under the cruise condition. The lift and drag forces in the wing with engines increase by 1.49% and 3.9%, respectively compared with the wing without engines.

  • A three-dimensional inviscid flow solver has been developed based on unstructured meshes for the simulation of steady and unsteady flowfields around a generic fighter aircraft and for the investigation of the aerodynamic interference between the external stores and the tail surfaces. The flow solver is based on a vertex-centered finite-volume method and an implicit point Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. To validate the flow solver, calculations were made for a steady flow and the computed results were compared with experimental data. An unsteady time-accurate computation of the generic fighter aircraft with external stores at transonic flight conditions showed that the external stores cause undesirable vibration on the horizontal tail surface due to the mutual interference between their wake and the horizontal tail surface. It was shown that downward deflection of the trailing edge flap significantly reduces the undesirable interference effect.

  • The present study describes a computational work to investigate detailed behaviors of the twin shock waves discharged from the exits of two-parallel ducts. In computations, the Yee-Roe-Davis's TVD scheme was used to solve the unsteady, three-dimensional, inviscid, compressible, Euler equations. The distance between two ducts is varied and the Mach number of the incident shock wave is changed below 2.0. The results obtained show that on the symmetric axis between two-parallel ducts, the maximum pressure achieved by the merge of twin shock waves and its location strongly depend upon the distance between two-parallel ducts and the Mach number of the incident shock wave. It is also found that the twin shock waves discharged from the exits of two-parallel ducts leads to the complicated flow fields, such as Mach stem, spherical waves, and vertical structures.

  • The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by a node-centered finite volume method with unstructured hybrid grids. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm and convective fluxes are obtained by Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with linear reconstruction of the solutions. Euler implicit method with Jacobi matrix solver is used for the time-integration. The viscous terms are discretised in a manner to handle any kind of grids such as tetragedra, prisms, pyramids, hexahedra, or mixed-element grid. Inviscid bump flow is solved to check the accuracy of high order convective flux discretisation. And viscous flows around a circular cylinder and a sphere are studied to show the efficiency and accuracy of the solver.

  • A supersonic inlet at angle of attack has anti-symmetric pressure distribution, and it can make flow instability and structural problem. In this study, numerical analysis of three-dimensional inviscid flow was conducted under various throttle ratio and angle of attack conditions. Throttle ratio was defined as the ratio of the exit area to the smallest cross section area at inlet, and the ratio is controlled from 0 to 2.42. At various angle of attack, the characteristics of steady and unsteady flow around supersonic inlet is observed under different throttling ratios. From these results, pressure recovery curves and pressure history curves were plotted by post processing. Using pressure history data, FFT analysis is also carried out. Through these processes, it shows the tendency of pressure distribution anti-symmetricity and changing dominant frequency as increasing angle of attack.

  • The geometry of a commercial passenger airplane is realized based on a Boeing 747-400 model through the photographic scanning and reverse engineering. The each element consisting of the plane such as fuselage, wing, vertical fin, stabilizer and engines, is individually generated and then the whole body is assembled by the photomodeler. The maximum error in the realized airplane is about 1.4% comparing with the real one. The three-dimensional inviscid steady compressible governing equations are solved in the unstructured tetrahedron grid system, and in a finite volume method using STAR-CD when the airplane flies at the cruise condition. The pressure distribution on the surface and the wing-tip vortices are visualized, and in addition to the aerodynamics coefficients, lift and drag are estimated.

  • The flow and acoustic fields due to a vortex ring interaction with a rigid sphere are simulated numerically. The flow field is regarded as three-dimensional inviscid and incompressible. The vorticity is assumed to be concentrated inside the finite core of vortex filament. The vortex filament curve, described by parabolic blending curve function, is used to effectively solve the modified Biot-Savart equation. The interaction between a vortex ring and a rigid sphere using the parabolic blending curve is calculated. The trajectory of the vortex ring is obtained with several different initial positions between the ring and the sphere. The force variations acting on the sphere are calculated by using the boundary integral method. Finally, we can also obtain the acoustic signals at the far field observation positions from the force variations acting on the rigid surface. We can find that the dipole axis of the directivity patterns are rotated during the interacting phenomena.

  • A three dimensional inviscid parallel flow solver has been developed for the simulation of rotor blades in forward flight. The computational domain is divided into stationary and rotating zones for the more efficient mesh adaptation. The conservative mesh treatment algorithm is used for the convection of flow variables and fluxes across the sliding boundary. A deforming mesh algorithm using modified spring analogy is used for the blade motion. In the present paper, detail descriptions of numerical analysis for forward flight are introduced. Some results are presented for a two bladed AH-1G rotor and compared with experimental data.
