  • The main object of this study was to understand the body image and body management behavior associated with desiring a thinner and more muscular body. The present study examined whether the drives for thinness and muscularity occur concurrently for both male and female college students, and whether there are gender differences. Moreover, the effects of objectified body consciousness on drive for thinness and drive for muscularity were investigated. A self-administered survey was conducted and a total of 390 data were used for data analysis. Participants included 197 male college students and 193 female students. Results indicated that male students reported significantly lower drive for thinness and higher drive for muscularity than female students. However, the drives for thinness and muscularity were significantly correlated for both male and female college students, and they reported discrepancies between their BMI and self-perceived weight and muscle mass. Findings supported the significant effects of objected body consciousness on the drives for thinness and muscularity for both male and females. Sub-dimensions of objectified body consciousness had differential effects on drive for thinness and muscularity. Specifically, body surveillance and body shame significantly influenced male and female students' drive for thinness, while their control belief did not have significant effects on their drive for thinness. Additionally, body shame emerged as significant unique predictor of drive for muscularity. In terms of gender comparisons, while the effect of body shame was the strongest for the males, the effect of surveillance was as strong as that of body shame for the females.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify effects of thinness promoting message from TV media on college women's appearance distortion. The subjects were 408 college women and survey was done from Aug 10 to 30. 2009. Most college women wanted their height to be taller and weight to be lighter than their actual height and weight, and preferred slimmer figures. Over half of college women enjoyed fashion related TV programs more than diet or plastic surgery related TV programs. College women were classified into 3 groups of TV heavy watcher, TV medium watcher, and TV light watcher according to TV watching time. TV heavy watchers wanted their figures to be slimmer and weight to be lighter than other groups, and were affected by thinness promoting message from TV media more. TV heavy watchers of thinness promoting message related programs showed a tendency of distorting their body more and tried to agree with those TV programs more. Especially, college women agreed with plastic surgery related TV programs more than fashion or diet related TV programs. TV media producers should keep in mind those side-effects and try to show more universal and diverse figures to TV watchers.

  • An experimental investigation has been carried out on the use of an environmentally sustainable material, bamboo, in the construction of precast concrete structural wall panels. The strength and behaviour of three prototype bamboo reinforced concrete wall panel specimens under two-way in-plane action was studied. The specimens with varying aspect ratio and thinness ratio were tested to fail under a uniformly distributed in-plane load applied at an eccentricity of t/6. The aspect ratio of the specimens considered includes 1.667, 1.818 and 2 and the thinness ratio includes 12.5, 13.75 and 15. The influence of aspect ratio and thinness ratio of bamboo reinforced concrete wall panels, on its strength and behaviour was discussed. Varnished and sand blasted bamboo splints of 20 mm width and thickness varying from 8 to 15 mm were used as reinforcement in concrete. Based on the study, an empirical equation was developed considering the geometrical parameters of bamboo reinforced concrete wall panels for predicting its ultimate strength under two way in-plane action.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of body image, body dissatisfaction, and drive for slimness, as mediated by self-esteem and depression, on eating disorder behavior according to gender The subjects of this study were 243 male and 323 female university students from Chungbuk National university in Cheonju. On the basis of previous literature, the theoretical model was specified and estimated for the adequacy of statistical fit for male and female students separately. The proposed theoretical model was supported by the data and fitted adequately. As expected, body image, body dissatisfaction, and desire for thinness had a direct effect on self-esteem for female students. However, whereas body image and body dissatisfaction directly influenced on male students' self-esteem, while desire for gaining weight had no direct effect. Eating disorder behavior in female students was predicted by body dissatisfaction, body image, and self-esteem. For male students, desire for gaining weight and self-esteem strongly predicted eating disorder behavior. The results indicate that the influence of body image, body dissatisfaction, and desire for thinness on eating disorder behavior can be mediated not by depression but by self-esteem.

  • In this paper, a fast thinning method for fingerprint image by separating end and bifurcation region is proposed. To detect feature points in automatic fingerprint identification system, thinning of fingerprint is essential. The end and bifurcation regions in ridge line are separated by means of run-length coding, and parallel thinning method is applied to the separated regions. The rest parts except the end and bifurcation regions are processed by connecting center points of each run. The performance of the proposed method has been evaluated by CPU processing time and thinness measurement. By the experimental results, the proposed method is fast and has high thinness value.

  • The recent craze for so-called skinny jeans is illustrative of the restraint of the body through dress. This phenomenon is noteworthy when considering the internalization of the corset in contemporary fashion. Grown out of the garments of soundly practical use, blue jeans have led the stream of fashion for about 150 years and now they serve as the new corset idealizing the female body in the form of skinny jeans. This study intends to examine the idealization of the body in contemporary fashion and focus on skinny jeans as an externalized corset. The struggle with corsets continues in that the real body is overwhelmed by fashion items. In the aspect of idealizing the body by constraining the body parts, skinny jeans externalize the control of the body as contemporary corsets. This study conducts literature research and content analysis as the method of investigation and focuses on women's fashion from the 20th century. Exerting a harmful influence on health (as corsets have done) the body in skinny jeans is regarded as a modifiable entity. The thinness of the body achieved by skinny jeans suggests the controlling power over the body. Moreover, this gives access to the power presented by the contemporary ideal of thinness. Skinny jeans are modern day glass slippers.
