  • Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful tool for analyzing a broad range of materials and provides localized information about the microstructure. However, the analysis results are strongly influenced by the quality of the thin foil specimen. Sample preparation for TEM analysis requires considerable skill, especially when the area of interest is small or the material of interest is difficult to thin because of its high hardness and its mechanical instability when thinned. This article selectively reviews recent advances in TEM sample preparation techniques using a tripod polisher. In particular, it introduces two typical types (fl at type and wedge type) of TEM sample preparation and the benefits and drawbacks of each method; finally, a method of making better samples for TEM analysis is suggested.

  • In the manufacturing process of joining of aluminum alloy and polymer, the strength of the metal-polymer joining is greatly influenced by the nanostructure of the oxide film. In this study, we investigated the dependence of joining strength on the thickness, structure, pore formation and surface roughness of the formed film. After the two-step anodization process, the surface oxide layer became thinner and rougher resulting in higher joining strength with the polymer. More specifically, after the two-step anodization, the surface roughness, Ra increased from 2.3 to 3.2 ㎛ with pore of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure, and the thickness of the oxide film was thinned from 350 to 250 nm. Accordingly, the joining strength of the aluminum alloy with polymer increased from 23 to 30 MPa.

  • The feedwater heaters are Critical components in a nuclear power plant. As the operation years of heaters go by, the maintenance costs required for continuous operation increase. When the carbon steel components in nuclear make contact with running fluid, the wall thinning caused by FAC (flow accelerated corrosion) can be generated. Local wall thinning is inevitable at the area around wet steam entrance to be attacked due to the long term operation. Sometimes the shell with thinned wall is eventually ruptured. To identify the relationship between the local wall thinning and fluid behavior of the feedwater heater, the practical data of a plant, which were based on ultrasonic thickness measurement tests, were analyzed and CFD(Computed Fluid Dynamics) analyses were performed.

  • A novel Si via structure is suggested and fabricated for 3D MEMS package using the doped silicon as an interconnection material. Oxide isolations which define Si via are formed simultaneously when fabricating the MEMS structure by using DRIE and oxidation. Silicon Direct Bonding Multi-stacking process is used for stacked package, which consists of a substrate, MEMS structure layer and a cover layer. The bonded wafers are thinned by lapping and polishing. A via with the size of $20{\mu}m$ is fabricated and the electrical and mechanical characteristics of via are under testing.

  • Monotonic four-point bending tests were conducted on straight pipe specimens, 102 mm in diameter with local wall thinning, in order to investigate the effects of the depth, shape, and location of wall thinning on the deformation and failure behavior of pipes. The local wall thinning simulated natural erosion/corrosion metal loss. The deformation and fracture behavior of the straight pipes with local wall thinning was compared with that of non wall-thinning pipes. The failure modes were classifiedas local buckling, ovalization, or crack initiation, depending on the depth, shape, and location of the local wall thinning. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were carried out using the finite element method. The deformation and failure behavior, simulated by finite element analyses, coincided with the experimental results.

  • A recognition algorithm for Hangul is developed by structural analysis to Hangul in this theses. Four major procedures are proposed : preprocessing, type classification, separation of consonant and vowel, recognition. In the preprocessing procedure, the thinning algorithm proposed by CHEN & HSU is applied. In the type classification procedure, thinned Hangul image is classified into one of six formal types. In the separation of consonant and vowel procedure, starting from branch-points which are existed in a vowel, character elements are separated by means of tracing branch-point pixel by pixel and comparison with proposed templates. In the same time, the vowels are recognized. In the recognition procedure, consonants are extracted from the separated Hangul character and recognized by modified Crossing method. Recognized characters are converted into KS-5601-1989 codes. The experiments show that correct recognition rate is about 80%-90% and recognition speed is about 2-3 character persecond in three types of different input data on computer with 80386 microprocessor.

  • This paper proposes a method to recognize vowels and consonants in a handwritten Hangul text, in which the sizes of chracters and the spaces between characters are not uniform. In this method, all characters in the thinned image of a handwritten Hangul text are transformed into strokes, and the attributes which represent the relations between strokes are extracted from these strokes, and the attributes which represent the relations between strokes are extracted from these strokes. The vowels and consonants are recognized by applying attributed grammars to the strokes and attributes.

  • In this paper, we represent the restoration and feature extraction of fingerprint image. The purpose of restoration of fingerprint image are to com pensate distortion which is affected by noise and to preserve various features of fingerprint image. To extracte the central point of fingerprint, we used sample matrix, and restore fingerprint, we used direction in formation of thinned image and the gray scale of the original images.

  • Ultra-high energy cosmic rays(UHECRs) refer cosmic rays with energy above 1018eV. UHECR experiments have employed air shower simulations to quantify the properties of cosmic rays. Using COSMOS and CORSIKA, we have produced a library of over 15000 thinned extensive air shower(EAS) simulations with the primary energies ranging from 1018.5eV to 1020eV and the zenith angle of primary cosmic ray particles from 0 to 45 for proton and iron primaries. We have compared the results from CORSIKA and COSMOS. The comparison has shown perceptible differences in the ground distributions, longitudinal distributions, Calorimetric energy, and Xmax distributions. We have also measured the detector response evaluated using GEANT4 simulations. Here, we discuss S(800), i.e. the signal at a distance of 800 m from the shower core, as the primary energy estimator and present the lateral distribution function(LDF) with S(800).

  • In the present study, three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed to investigate the effects of internal wall thinning defect on the failure pressure of elbow in the piping system and to develop the failure pressure evaluation model. From the results of finite element analysis, the failure pressure was derived by employing local stress criteria, and the effects of thinning location, bend radius, and defect geometry on the failure pressure of internally wall thinned elbow were investigated. Also, based on these investigations and previous model developed to estimate the failure pressure of elbow with an external pitting defect, the failure pressure evaluation model to be applicable to the elbow containing an internal thinning defect was proposed and compared with the results of finite element analysis. The failure pressure calculated by the model agreed well with the results of finite element analysis.
