  • A new three-dimensional thin shell element for the structure containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is proposed. A finite element formulation for the static response of the shell with piezoelectric sensor/actuator is derived. The assumed strain formulation and the bubble function improves the performance of the shell element. The verification through the calculation of the static response for the piezoelectic bimorph beam shows that the results agree with those from the theoretical analysis very well.

  • In this paper free linear vibration of lattice composite conical shells will be investigated. Lattice composite conical shell consists of composite helical ribs and thin outer skin. A smeared method is employed to obtain the variable coefficients of stiffness of conical shell. The ribs are modeled as a beam and in addition to the axial loads, endure shear loads and bending moments. Therefore, theoretical formulations are based on first-order shear deformation theory of shell. For verification of the obtained results, comparison is made with those available in open literature. Also, using FEM software the 3D finite element model of composite lattice conical shell is built and analyzed. Comparing results of analytical and numerical analyses show a good agreement between them. Some special cases as variation of geometric parameters of lattice part, effect of the boundary conditions and influence of the circumferential wave numbers on the natural frequencies of the conical shell are studied. It is concluded, when mass and the geometrical ratio of the composite lattice conical shell do not change, increment the semi vertex angle of cone leads to increase the natural frequencies. Moreover for shell thicknesses greater than a specific value, the presence of the lattice structure has not significant effect on the natural frequencies. The obtained results have novelty and can be used for further and future researches.

  • We have performed the high resolution computer simulation with 1D spherical hydrodynamic code in order to study the dynamical evolution of supernova ejecta interacting with a pre-existing fast wind structure. The fast wind structure has been calculated with $M_{in}=3{\times}10^{-6}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ and ${\upsilon}_{in}=1000km/sec$, which velocity is higher than the critical velocity relating to the initial radiative cooling. The fast wind becomes initially adiabatic. After a shell formation time of ${\sim}4000yrs$, the wind becomes radiative cooling at the shell zone, forming a thin dense radiative shell and an adiabatic wind bubble afterward. When supernova explodes in the wind center at 20,000yrs after the wind evolves, the supernova ejecta, which has a dense distribution of ${\rho}{\propto}r^{-n}$(here we have n = 9), interacts initially with, the understood wind zone, producing forward and reverse shocks. The reverse shock heats the supernova ejecta and its temperature increases. In this study, as the mass of the supernova ejecta is larger than that of the wind shell ($M_{ej}=5M_{\odot}$, $M_{sw}=2M_{\odot}$), we can conform two shell structures: an outer shell by the supernova ejecta and a secondarily shocked wind shell by it. The secondarily shocked wind shell should accelerates in this case to be R-T unstable, consequently producing the knots.

  • The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural rotational coupling between shell and plate is simulated using the rotational artificial spring. For the translational coupling, the continuity conditions for the displacements of shell and plate are used. For the uncoupled annular plate, the transverse motion is considered and the in-plane motions are not. And the additional transverse and in-plane motions of the coupled annular plate by shell deformation are considered in analysis. Theoretical formulations are based on Love's thin shell theory. The frequency equation of the combined shell with an annular plate is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. The effect of inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position and thickness of annular plate on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. To demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method, the finite element analysis is performed.

  • Pressure loads caused by gas, water and wind are the most important load cases in structural analysis. Often the pressure loads are approximated by constant directional loads since it is difficult to evaluate the exact value. However, the pressure load is defined as a displacement dependent one and it is necessary to consider the follower effects of the load in analysis procedure. In this study, the large deformation analysis considering geometrical nonlinearity for shell structures under pressure loads is presented. Finite element by using a three-node flat triangular shell element is formulated and the follower effects of the pressure load are included in the formulation. Some of results are presented for cantilevered beam under uniform external pressure and thin circular ring under non-uniform external pressure. The present results are in good agreement with the results available in existing literature and commercial software ABAQUS.

  • Formulation of an 8 nodes assumed strain shell element is presented for the analysis of shells. The stiffness matrix based on the Mindlin-Reissner theory is analytically integrated through the thickness. The element is free of membrane and shear locking behavior by using the assumed strain method such that the element performs very well in modeling of thin shell structures. The material is assumed to be isotropic and laminated composite. The element has six degrees of freedom per node and can model the stiffened plates and shells. A great number of numerical testing carried out for the validation of present 8 node shell element are in good agreement with references.

  • Finite element model based on the Naghdi's shell theory in the general tensor-based form is formulated in the present study. Partial mixed variational functional for assumed strain is formulated in order to avoid the severe locking troubles known as transverse shear and membrane locking. The proposed assumed strain element in general tensor Naghdi's shell model provides very accurate solutions for thin shells in benchmark problems. In additions, linear elastic constitutive equations are given in the general curvilinear coordinate system including anisotropic layered structures. Thus laminated composited shell structures are easily analyzed in the present formulation.

  • A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies of hyperboloidal shells free at the top edge and clamped at the bottom edge like a hyperboloidal cooling tower by the Ritz method based upon the circular cylindrical coordinate system instead of related 3-D shell coordinates which are normal and tangent to the shell midsurface. The Legendre polynomials are used as admissible displacements. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated. Natural frequencies from the present 3-D analysis are also compared with those of straight beams with circular cross section, complete (not truncated) conical shells, and circular cylindrical shells as special cases of hyperboloidal shells from the classical beam theory, 2-D thin shell theory, and other 3-D methods.
