  • This paper reports a novel gas sensing method by using a thermoelectric device, thermopile in this case, with an embedded tin oxide catalyst. By using a thin catalyst film, the response time and recovery time were remarkably improved. The fabricated gas sensor was characterized through detecting NOx gas with various concentrations.

  • The prototype of a tactile sensor with $4\times 4$ taxels using PVDF was fabricated. The electrode patterns of the thin Cu tape are attached to the 28${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness PVDF using conductive adhesive and covering the sensor using polyester film for insulation. The structure of the sensor is flexible and the fabrication procedure is easy relatively. Also the output characteristics of the sensor was nearly linear with 8% deviation. The signals of a contact pressure to the tactile sensor are sensed and processed through A/D converter, DSP system and personal computer. The reasonable performance for the detection of contact shape and force distribution was verified through the experiment.

  • In this paper, a contact-type linear encoder-like capacitive displacement sensor (CLECDS) is proposed. It is based on the linear encoder capacitive displacement sensor that consists of two substrates with a series of conducting grating in identical size and it is used as a contact sensor of which the two substrates assembled faced to each other after coated with thin dielectric film. It was confirmed that the prototype of this sensor has resolution of about 126nm and measuring range of 20 mm in the test.

  • In this work, Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films for NOx gas sensor application were deposited on low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) substrates, by RF magnetron sputtering method. The LTCC substrate is one of promising materials for this application since it has many advantages (e.g., low cost production, high manufacturing yields and easy realizing 3D structure etc.). The LTCC substrates with thickness of 400 pm were fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The structural properties of the fabricated GZO thin films with different thickness are analyzed by X-ray diffraction method (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The GZO gas sensors are tested by gas measurement system under varing operation temperature and show good performance to the NOx gas in sensitivity and response time.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films with a TiN buffer layer have been fabricated on SUS430 substrate by RF reactive magnetron sputtering at room temperature under 25~75% $N_2$ /Ar. The characterization of film properties were performed using surface profiler, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and pressure-voltage measurement system. The deposition rates of AlN films were decreased with increasing the $N_2$ concentration owing to lower mass of nitrogen ions than Ar. The as-deposited AlN films showed crystalline phase, and with increasing the $N_2$ concentration, the peak of AlN(100) plane and the crystallinity became weak. Any change in the preferential orientation of the as-deposited AlN films was not observed within our $N_2$ concentration range. But in the case of 50% $N_2$ /Ar condition, the peak of (002) plane, which is determinant in pressure sensing properties, appeared. XPS depth profiling of AlN/TiN/SUS430 revealed Al/N ratio was close to stoichiometric value (45:47) when deposited under 50% $N_2/Ar$ atmosphere at room temperature. The output signal voltage of AlN sensor showed a linear behavior between 26~85 mV, and the pressure-sensing sensitivity was calculated as 7 mV/MPa.

  • This paper reports the resistance change of conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-films according to the temperature variation. Resistance of conductive CNT thin-films intrinsically has good thermal sensitivity, but shows environmental dependency. In order to reduce environmental effects, we spin-coated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on the conductive CNT thin-films. We observed that conductive CNT thin-films with a PDMS encapsulation layer showed little environmental dependency, but more linear and stable temperature dependencies. If proper encapsulation is provided, conductive CNT thin-films can be used for temperature sensor applications.

  • Alternating magnetic field was used for detection of surface flaws on nonmagnetic and magnetic metallic specimens. The nondestructive sensor probe was composed of the planar coil with inductive magnetic thin film yoke as a sensing component and a single straight typed exciting coil. The planar inductive coil sensor with magnetic yoke was fabricated by sputtering, electroplating, dry etching and photolithography process. The alternative currents with the range of 0.1A to 1.0A (0.7 MHz to 1.8 MHz) were applied to the exciting coil. The specimens were prepared with the slit shaped artificial surface flaws (minimum depth and width; 0.5 mm) on metallic plate (Al; nonmagnetic metal and FeC; magnetic metal). The detected signal for the positions and shapes of surface flaws on specimens were obtained with high sensitivity and high signal to ratio. The measured output signals by the non-contacted scanning on surface of FeC specimen with micron-sized crack were converted to the images of the flaws. And these results were compared with the optical images, respectively.
