  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of contralateral hip adduction (CHA) on thickness of lumbar stabilizers during hip abduction in side-lying. Twenty healthy subjects without back pain were recruited for this study. The thickness of transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO) and quadratus lumborum (QL) were measured by ultrasonography. Pelvic lateral tilting motion was measured using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Measurements were performed at rest position (RP), $35^{\circ}$preferred hip abduction (PHA) and $35^{\circ}$abduction with $10^{\circ}$contralateral hip adduction (CHA) in side-lying at the end of expiration. During the measurements, subjects were asked to maintain steady trunk alignment without hand support. Thickness of TrA and IO was significantly greater in CHA than in PHA and RP conditions. There was no significant difference in thickness of TrA and IO between PHA and RP conditions. Medio-lateral (M-L) thickness of QL was not significant between PHA and CHA conditions. Anterio-posterior (A-P) thickness of QL in PHA and CHA significantly decreased compared to RP condition. Angle of pelvic lateral tilting was significantly decreased in CHA compared to PHA condition. In conclusion, CHA can be recommended for increasing trunk stability without compensatory pelvic motion during hip abduction exercise in side-lying.

  • The main purpose of this work is to investigate the effects of the wall thickness, the ultrasonic frequency, and the acoustic impedance of wall material on the liquid-film thickness measurement by an ultrasonic pulse echo method. A series of liquid-film thickness measurements in a horizontal air-water stratified system was performed employing a plate-type and a tube-type test sections. Measurements were repeated changing (1) the wall thickness of the test section and (2) the transducer frequency. Also, in an effort to improve the accuracy of the measurement and to exam me the effect of acoustic impedance of wall material on the measurement by an ultrasonic technique, two different stand-off rods, one made of stainless steel and the other polyacrylate, were used in the liquid-film thickness measurement. These experimental results are discussed and compared with the actual film thicknesses.

  • Subcutaneous fat thickness of 74 young male was measured at six sites(biceps, triceps, subscapula, suprailiac, abdomen, thigh). The present study compared caliper with ultrasound measurements for the estimation of body fat. Caliper measurements subcutaneous at six sites had higher coefficient variation than did the ultrasound measures. Caliper measurements subcutaneous at six sites had higher ratio (caliper/ultrasound) than did the ultrasound measures. Compared to other body sites, the correlations between caliper and ultrasound measurements were high for the subscapula(r=0.7327), abdomen(r=0.7355) and thigh (r=0.7207) sites. the correlations between caliper and ultrasound measurements were high for the suprailiac(r=0.6616) site by lean group. the correlations between caliper and ultrasound measurements were high for the abdomen(r=0.7636) site by normal group. The correlations between caliper and ultrasound measurements were high for the subscapula (r=0.8959) and abdomen(r=0.8237) sites by obese group. Ultrasound measurement of biceps(r=-0.4459), abdomen9r=-0.4469), thigh(r=-0.4348) had the highest correlation with body density. Caliper measurement of triceps(r=-0.4017), subscapula(r=-0.4454), abdomen(r=-0.4293) had the highest correlation with body density. Ultasound measurements subcutaneous fat at lean group, obese group had higher coefficients of correlation with body density than did the caliper measurement. Caliper measurements subcutaneous fat at normal group had higher coefficients of correlation with body density than did the ultrasound measures. Ultrasound showed to be superior to the caliper technique in measuring subcutaneous fat of obese persons.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability of muscle thickness (MT) measurements of the abductor hallucis (AbdH) in subjects with hallux valgus (HV), using ultrasonography performed at different inward pressures of approximately 0.5 kg, 1.0 kg, 1.5 kg, and 2.0 kg, with no pressure control. Methods: Thirty-two subjects with HV were recruited. The thicknesses of both sides of the AbdH were measured randomly by two different examiners for assessment of the intra- and inter-rater reliability. The measurement values were analyzed using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). ICC (2,1) was used to determine the inter-rater reliability of MT measurements of the AbdH, while ICC (3,1) was used to assess the intra-rater reliability. Results: The results showed higher ICC values for intra-rater reliability compared to inter-rater reliability, and the value for inter-rater reliability with no pressure control (ICC=0.74 [95%CI=0.53-0.87]) was smaller compared to pressures of 0.5 kg, 1.0 kg, 1.5 kg, and 2.0 kg. Other inward pressures for intra- and inter-rater reliability also showed excellent values (ICC=0.86-0.96). Conclusion: The findings showed that maintaining consistent inward pressure is essential for reliable results in measurement of the MT of the AbdH by different examiners in a clinical setting.

  • The clear sky radiative forcings of aerosols were evaluated over East Asia. We first investigated optical characteristics of aerosol using sky radiation measurements. An algorithm of Nakajima et al. (1996) is used for retrieving aerosol parameters such as optical thickness, ${\AA}$ngstr$\"{O}$m exponent, single scattering albedo, and size distribution from sky-radiation measurements, which then can be used for examining spatial and temporal variations of aerosol. Obtaining aerosol radiative forcing at TOA and surface, a radiative transfer model is used with inputs of obtained aerosol parameters and GMS-5 satellite-based cloud optical properties. Results show that there is a good agreement of simulated downwelling radiative flux at the surface with observation within 10 W m$^{-2}$ rms errors under the clear sky condition. However, a relatively large difference up to 40 W m$^{-2}$ rms error is found under the cloudy sky condition. The computed aerosol radiative forcing at the surface shows downward flux changes ranging from -100 to -170 W m$^{-2}$ per unit aerosol optical thickness at 0.7 $\mu$m. The different values of aerosol radiative forcing among the stations is mainly due to the differences in single scattering albedo ($\omega$$_{0.7}$) and asymmetric parameter (g$_1$) related to the geographical and seasonal variations.

  • Maternal body weight, skinfold thickness and circumference measurements were examined in 23 lactating women and 10 nonlactating women longitudinally from 1 week to 12 weeks postpartum. The dietary intakes of Korean lactating and nonlactating women were measured by 24-hour recall method and effects of maternal energy intake on body weight change were analyzed by Pearson correlation. The mean daily energy intake of breast-feeding(BF, n=12), combination of breast and formula-feeding (CF, n=11), and formula-feeding (FF, n=10) mothers were 1941kcal, 187kcal and 1727kcal, respectively. A significant decrease in weight was observed at all group. Weight losses at 12 weeks of postpartum in BF, CF and FF motheres were 3.18kg, 3.91kg and 5.15kg respectively. Weight losses increased as calorie intake decreased (${\gamma}$2=0.3803, p<0.05). The skinfold thickness and circumferences on all regions were decreased significantly except triceps and upper arm circumferences. However, there were no significant differences between lactating and nonlactating women. Anthropometric measurements decreased at the trunk but not at the limbs. Weight change was significantly correlated with changes of the scores for proximal circumference (${\gamma}$2=0.4999, p<0.05). There results suggest that lactation does not promete weight loss in well-nourished women and that the Korean RDA for energy in lactation may be too high.

  • The aim of this study was to provide the basic 2-dimensional statistics requisite in the siting system and design of gloves. The 64 static measurements were selected to provide information about hands. Participants in the study were 824 adults, aged between 18 and 64. Subjects were divided into four age groups: 18 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, and 50 to 64, and separated according to sex. Statistical tests such as Descriptive Analysis, and Anova were conducted to analyze the data and ascertain the differences among the ages. The disparities between sex groups were compared by T-test. In addition, correlation among the 57 measurements was analyzed and the results were compared to the data from Japanese and other studies. The results indicated that all the measurements were significantly larger in the male group. There were significant differences among age groups for most hand circumferences, breadths and thickness items. As the age increased, the hand circumferences, breadths and thickness items became wider and thicker. In addition, as the age increased, the mean measurement value of the length items decreased, so that it became shorter. Hand length was highly correlated with finger length, palm length and height. Maximum hand circumference II was highly correlated with hand circumferences, hand breadth and weight.

  • Cutaneous electrogastrography is the measurement of electrical activity of the stomach on the abdominal surface. The validity of cutaneous electrogastrography is dependent upon the quality of the recording technique. The locations of electrodes are an important issue. We examined the influences of the inter-electrode distance of bipolar leads on electrogastrography measurements. The sensitivity distributions of EGG leads were calculated based on a 2D body fat model and evaluated according to the region of interest sensitivity ratio (ROISR). We simulated the ROISR of the inter-electrode distance in relation to various body fat thicknesses. The distance between the electrodes was proportional to the distance between the ROI and the surface of the abdomen. The results imply that inter-electrode distance can be applied in electrogastrography according to human body fat thickness.

  • A fully automatic image analysis method was applied to obtain detailed data on morphological parameters of a glucoamylase fermentation broth with Aspergillus niger No. PFST-38. a mutant strain for glucoamylase hyperproducer. In the initial stage of fermentation. there was an increase in hyphal length. whereas at the end of the fermentation a decrease in hyphal length and increase in hyphal thickness were observed. The percentage of clumps declined with dilution and the influence of shear stress upon hyphal length was negligible. It was found that the slower the decrease in the main hyphal length and the number of tips with the fermentation time. the higher the glucoamylase production rate was recorded. The production rate of glucoamylase was closely related to the increase in the hyphal thickness.

  • Here we show how by processing energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) data obtained using highly sensitive, new generation EDS detectors in the AZtec LayerProbe software we can obtain data of sufficiently high quality to non-destructively measure the number of layers in two-dimensional (2D) $MoS_2$ and $MoS_2/WSe_2$ and thereby enable the characterization of working devices based on 2D materials. We compare the thickness measurements with EDS to results from atomic force microscopy measurements. We also show how we can use electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to address fabrication challenges of 2D materials. Results from EBSD analysis of individual flakes of exfoliated $MoS_2$ obtained using the Nordlys Nano detector are shown to aid a better understanding of the exfoliation process which is still widely used to produce 2D materials for research purposes.
