Correlations of Symmetry of the Trunk Muscle Thickness by Gender with the Spinal Alignment in Healthy Adults

  • Purpose: Most studies have reported that the abdominal muscle thickness differs according to gender but none of these studies reported a gender difference in the thickness of the multifidus and erector spine. The spinal alignment is affected by the left and right balance in the trunk muscle. The aim of this study was to identify the trunk muscle symmetry according to gender and the correlations of the trunk muscle thickness with spinal alignment. Methods: Forty three subjects(27 males and 16 females) were enrolled in this study. The trunk muscle thickness was measured by ultrasonography. The trunk muscle, which consisted of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique abdominis (EOA), internal oblique abdominis (IOA), transverse abdominis (TrA), erector spine (ES), and multifidus (MF), was measured. The spinal alignment was measured by Formetric-III 3D analysis. The dependent variables of the spinal alignment were the trunk imbalance, trunk inclination, lateral deviation, and surface rotation. Results: The muscle thickness of the EOA muscle increased more significantly in the right side than the left side (p<0.05). Each left and right difference in the muscle thickness between the male and female group showed a significant difference (p<0.05) except for the TrA thickness. Significant positive correlations were observed between the ES and lateral deviation and between the TrA with trunk imbalance. Conclusion: These results suggest that asymptomatic men have a greater trunk muscle thickness than women but there was no difference between the left and right in healthy adults. The trunk muscle thickness of ES, TrA is related by the spinal alignment.

Comparison Study Between Coverage Choices for Radial Forearm Free Flap Donor Site (전완유리피판 공여부 재건에서 전층 피부이식술과 부분층 피부이식술의 비교)

  • Backgrounds: The purpose of this study was to compare full thickness skin graft with inguinal skin to split thickness skin graft for coverage of the radial forearm free flap donor site. Patients and Methods: 25 patients who was reconstructed with radial forearm free flap for head and neck cancer were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The graft loss rates of full thickness skin graft were less than split thickness skin graft or split thickness skin graft with dermal substitutes. The recovery times of donor site and skin graft donor site of full thickness skin graft were also shorter than split thickness skin graft or split thickness skin graft with dermal substitutes. Skin texture and aesthetic results of donor site were improved and complications as itching and pain sensation were decreased. Conclusion: Full thickness skin grafts with inguinal skin should be considered for patients requiring a radial forearm free flap.

Effects of Co Thickness on the Formation of Epitaxial CoSi2 Thin Film (Co 두께가 $CoSi_2$ 에피박막 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of Co thickness on the formation of epitaxial $CoSi_2$ from the Co/Ti bilayer have been investigated. Ti and Co were sequentially deposited with the Ti thickness fixed at 5 or 10nm, while the Co thickness was varied from 5 to 30nm. The metal-deposited samples were then rapidly thermal-annealed in $N_2$ at $900^{\circ}C$ for 20 sec. Material properties of $CoSi_2$ thin films were analyzed by the 4-point probe, XRD, AES, andXTEM. When the as-deposited Co thickness was below 15nm, the $CoSi_2$ with high resistivity and rough interface was formed. On the other hand, when the Co thickness was above 15 nm, the epitaxial $CoSi_2$ with the resistivity of about 16 ~ 19 $\mu\Omega.cm$, uniform composition and thickness and flat interface was formed. Initial Ti thickness has sizable effect on the formation of $CoSi_2$, when the Co layer was very thin (~ 5 nm). But there was no significant effect of the Ti thickness for the initial Co thickness of above 15 nm.

Prediction of Laminar Burning Velocity and Flame Thickness in Methane-Air Pre-Mixture (메탄-공기 예혼합기에서의 층류 화염속도 및 화염두께 예측)

  • The thickness of flame and preheat zone from burning velocity which was computed by using Premix code of Chemkin program for methane-air mixture. Also the thickness was evaluated from temperature profile which is also obtained from Premix code for the equivalence ratio of 0.5 to 1.6. The computations were carried out for the laminar flame thickness and burning velocity under the unburned gas temperature 0.5bat-30bar and temperature of 300K-700K at ${\Phi}=l.0$. Comparison of the results showed no difference between these two methods. The flame thickness was decreased by increasing the pressure and temperature, but, the affect of pressure is more significant than the effect of temperature on the flame thickness. The thickness of preheat zone was about 66.5% of the flame thickness, and flame thickness and burning velocity were also predicted by using empirical equation.

Prediction of Laminar Flame Thickness of Ethanol-Air Pre-Mixture (에탄올-공기 예혼합기의 층류 화염두께 예측)

  • The thickness of laminar flame and preheat zone was computed from equation with burning velocity and the temperature profile, which is obtained by using premix code of Chemkin program for ethanol-air mixture. The computations were carried out under the unburned gas pressure 0.5bar-30bar and temperature of 300k-700K at 1.0. A difference flame thickness showed between temperature profile and equation with burning velocity. The ratio of flame thickness derived from the equation was about 45∼65% of the temperature profile, and the thickness of preheat zone was about 67.1% of the flame thickness. The flame thickness was decreased by increasing the pressure and temperature, but the effect of pressure is more significant than the effect of temperature on the flame thickness. Age and Sex Related Changes in Corneal Thickness and Anterior Corneal Curvature in Korean Young Population with Orbscan II Topography System

  • This study investigated, using the Orbscan II topography system, the influence of age and sex related changes on the corneal thickness and anterior corneal curvature, more specifically the fine structure of the cornea, in a Korean young population. The Orbscan II topography system is a computer-assisted slit-beam scanning technology that can map the anterior section of the cornea. The mean central corneal thickness of all subjects was $547.532{\pm}44.529\;{\mu}m$. There was no statistical difference (p>0.5) in the mean central corneal thickness between males and females. Sex and age related changes in the mean central corneal thickness had no specific statistical difference (P>0.5). There was a negative correlation between the anterior corneal curvature and the central corneal thickness in all subjects, except for the twenty year olds. However, the thickness relationship between the mean central corneal and the eight paracentral corneal thicknesses had strong statistical differences in all subjects. Also age and sex related changes in the central corneal thickness and the anterior corneal curvature in all subjects had no statistically significant difference, except from 20-26 years old (p>0.05). This information could be a suitable reference basis for future studies in the young population of Asia and for the development of examination tools for corneal refractive surgery.

Ultrasonographic evaluation of skin thickness in small breed dogs with hyperadrenocorticism

  • The purpose of this study was to propose a standard for differentiation between normal dogs and patients with hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) by measuring skin thickness via ultrasonography in small breed dogs. Significant changes in skin thickness of patients treated with prednisolone (PDS) or patients with HAC treated with trilostane were evaluated. Skin thickness was retrospectively measured on three abdominal digital images obtained from small breed dogs weighing < 15 kg that underwent abdominal ultrasonography. Mean skin thickness of normal dogs was $1.03{\pm}0.25mm$ (mean ${\pm}$ SD). Both the HAC and PDS groups showed significantly thinner skin than that in the normal group. Seven of the 10 HAC patients treated with trilostane had increased skin thickness. The area under the curve value of 0.807 was based on the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve for differentiating normal dogs from HAC patients. Sensitivity was 76% and specificity was 73% when skin thickness was less than the 0.83 mm cutoff value. In conclusion, measurement of skin thickness in small breed dogs by using ultrasonography is likely to provide clinical information useful in differentiating HAC patients from normal dogs. However, exposure to PDS, trilostane, and other conditions may have a significant effect on skin thickness.

Analysis of cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure of 20 to 24 years old population in Korea (한국인 20세부터 24세까지 각막 두께와 안압의 분석)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure Korean adult of 20 to 24 year old using the Pentacam and tonometer. Methods: The subjects of this study were 43 Korean adults with healthy eyes. Corneal thickness was measured with Pentacam device. The intra ocular pressure was measured with tonometer. Data was analyzed by means of the Pearson's correlation cofficient. P-values<0.001 were considered statistically significant. Results: Mean age of subjects was 20.41±0.86 years. The mean +/- intra ocular pressure of the right eye and left eye were 16.236±2.523mmHg and 16.971±1.992mmHg, respectively. The mean central corneal thickness of the right eye and left eye was 545.324±38.682㎛ and 547.442±33.778㎛, respectively. No significant difference in central corneal thickness was found between the right and left eyes. But, there was a statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and peripheral cornea thickness around 4 mm of central cornea(p<0.001, Pearson's correlation). However there was no statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure. Conclusion: The results of this study could be used as a clinical reference data for diagnosis and treatment of cornea in Korean adult.

Statistical Estimates of Cloud Thickness and Precipitable Water from GMS Brightness Data (GMS Brightness를 사용한 구름 두께와 가강수량의 통계적 추정)

  • A statistical correlation between cloud thickness and brightness is shown by regression analysis using the least-square method. Cloud thicknesses are obtained from radiosonde observation. Brightness values are obtained from GMS visible channel. Regression analyses are preformed on both thickness data used in conjunction with brightness data for summer season. The results are shown by the regression curve relating thickness and brightness accounting for 79% of variance. And the relationship between thickness and precipitable water in the cloud layers is analyzed. The thickness shows a positive correlation with precipitable water in cloudy layers.

  • Aim of this work is investigating effect of thickness-stretching formulation on the quasi three-dimensional analysis of micro plate based on a thickness-stretched and shear deformable model through principle of virtual work and micro-scale dependent constitutive relations. Governing differential equations are derived in terms of five unknown functions and the analytical solution is derived using Navier's technique. To explore effect of thickness stretching model on the static results, a comparison between the results with and without thickness stretching effect is presented.
