Effects of PCC Loading at Thick Stock on the Paper Properties (고농도 지료에서의 PCC 충전이 종이 물성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of PCC loading at thick stock on the physical properties of paper. The effect of starch addition(2, 4 and 6%) and mixing time(5, 10 and 20 min.) on the filler retention and paper properties were investigated. Optimum dosage of cationic starch as a fixing agent was 4%, and mixing time did not showed any significant effect on the filler retention. PCC loading at thick stock was more effective to improve bulk and opacity than PCC loading at thin stock, although their improvement was not so significant. It was also found that the strength properties could be improved by the loading at thick stock. PCC loading method at thick stock could be considered as one of potential approaches for further improving of paper properties, although further research works are required in order to apply the PCC loading at thick stock in the paper mill.

  • Fillers have been used for papermaking in order to enhance the optical properties, to improve sheet formation, printability and dimensional stability and to reduce the furnish cost. However, filler particles in paper interfere with fiber-fiber bonding, resulting in decreased paper strength. In order to increase filler content in paper without sacrificing too much paper strength, dual addition technology of fillers was investigated. As a first step, the effects of thick stock addition of fillers on paper properties and papermaking process were elucidated. It was shown that thick stock addition of fillers could increase paper strength at a given filler content. No significant adverse effects on formation, drainage and filler retention were observed. However, bulk of paper was reduced with thick stock addition of fillers, which shall be resolved with regulating other factors such as the mixing ratio of pulps and type of fillers.

  • Fillers have been used to improve the optical and printing properties and to reduce the production cost while increasing the filler content in paper causes adverse effects on paper strength. In the previous study, it was shown that the thick stock addition of filler can increase the filler content without significantly sacrificing paper strength. This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of the location of starch addition (before or after the filler addition) on handsheet properties and a papermaking process as a part of developing the thick stock loading technology. In addition, effects of dual flow addition of cationic starch were evaluated. It was found that paper strength was superior when cationic starch was added after the filler addition. No adverse effects on optical properties, formation and filler retention were observed. Drainage was a bit slower when starch was added after the filler addition, which shall be resolved with regulating other factors. Dual flow addition of cationic starch before and after filler addition did not show any special advantage.

  • Filler loading at thick stock was carried out in order to verify if the dual addition of filler can be used as a means to reduce the detrimental effects of filler on the strength properties of paper. PCC was added to 3.5% pulp slurry blended with HwBKP, BCTMP and SwBKP. Cationic starch was used as a fixing agent. The mixture of PCC and pulp was stirred for 5, 10 and 20min. at 1,000 rpm. The remaining PCC was washed out before handsheet making. PCC particles were flocculated and fixed on the pulp fiber and/or space between fibers. It is expected that the flocculation and inclusion of PCC can be helpful to improve the strength properties of paper due to the reduction of detrimental effect in fiber bonding. The distinct tendency in PCC flocculation and fixing on pulp fiber was not observed by the change of cationic starch dosage and treatment time.

  • In this work an integrated model for paper plants combining wet-end and dry section is developed and a model predictive control scheme based on the plant model is proposed. Closed-loop process identification method is employed to produce a state-space model. Thick stock, filler flow, machine speed and steam pressure are selected as Input variables and basis weight, ash content and moisture content are considered as output variables. The desired output trajectory is constructed in the form of 1st-order dynamics. Results of simulations for control of grade change operations are compared with plant operation data collected during the grade change operations under the same conditions as in simulations. From the comparison, we can see that the proposed model predictive control scheme reduces the grade change time and achieves stable steady-state.

Effects of Duroc Breeding Lines on Carcass Composition and Meat Quality

  • This study was performed to investigate the carcass composition and pork quality of Duroc breeding lines in Korea. A total of 200 Duroc pigs were used, and those were originated from four different great-grandparent (GGP) breeding stock farms (L1: N farm, L2: W farm, L3: S farm, L4: R farm). The carcasses of pigs from these farms were collected, and meat quality traits were evaluated. L1 and L2 had smaller carcass weights and thin backfat, whereas L3 and L4 had heavy carcass weights and thick backfat. L3 and L4 had higher contents of fat and protein than L1 and L2. For the meat quality characteristics, L1, L2, and L4 had higher pH values than L3. In addition, L4 had higher water holding capacity than the other lines. L4 had the highest sensory evaluation scores with regard to both juiciness and flavor. Consequently, the study results indicate that pork quality information from domestic Duroc breeding stock lines could be used to effectively improve pork quality in Korea.

  • The fine blanking is a process of press-working which makes possible to produce thick sheet metal parts of finished sheared surface and close dimensional accuracy over whole material thickness in single blanking operation. Fineblanked parts in general are characterized by their cleanly sheared surface over the whole stock thickness and accurate size for the specific functions. The fine blanking technology is urgently needed to remove secondary operations which are necessary in conventional blanking operation and cost reduction. In this study, the effect of material texture and vee-ring on parts for automobile is investigated by experimental observation and analysis.

  • The Chisulryoung Volcanic Formation comprises a thick sequence of pyroclastic flow deposits. Six members are distinguished, each representing separate flow units, comprising weakly to intensely welded acidic tuffs. A stock of welded acidic tuff, 1 km in diameter, intrudes hornblende granodiorite and sediments of Late Cretaceous age and the lower part of the Chisulryoung Volcanic Tuff Formation and may represent the vent through which the upper flows of the Chisulryoug Volcanic Formation were erupted.

  • Considerable research efforts have been explored attempting to enhance the thermal durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) at the high operating temperatures of gas turbines. In this study, the suspension plasma spray (SPS) process was applied to produce TBCs with a segmented structure by using an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) suspension. Four different experiment sets were carried out by controlling the ratio between surface roughness of the bond coat and feed stock size ($R_a/D_{50}$) in order to examine the effect of $R_a/D_{50}$ ratio on the microstructure of SPS-prepared coatings. When the $R_a/D_{50}$ had a high value of 11.8, a deposited thick coating turned out to have a cone-type columnar microstructure. In contrast, at the low $R_a/D_{50}$ values of 2.9 and 0.18, a deposited thick coating appeared to have a dense, vertically-cracked microstructure. However, with the very low $R_a/D_{50}$ value of 0.05 the coating was delaminated.

  • The wet-end dynamics of a paper mill was analyzed to characterize its dynamic behavior during the grade change. The model representing the wet-end section is developed based on the mass balance relationships written for the simplified wet-end white water network. From the linearization of the dynamic model, higher-order Laplace transfer functions were obtained followed by the reduction procedure to give simple lower-order models in the form of $1^{st}$-order or $2^{nd}$-order plus dead times. The dynamic response of the wet-end is influenced both by the white water volume and by the level of wire retention. Effects of key manipulated variables such as the thick stock flow rate, the ash flow rate and the retention aid flow rate on the major controlled variables were analyzed by numerical simulations. The simple dynamic model developed in the present study can be effectively used in the operation and control.
