  • A vaporization model for single component fuel droplet has been developed for applying to sub- and supercritical conditions. This model can account for transient liquid heat ins and circulation effect inside the droplet, forced and natural convection, Stefan flow effect, real gas effect and ambient gas solubility into the liquid droplet in high-pressure conditions. Thermodynamic and transport properties are calculated as functions of temperature and pressure in both phases. Numerical calculations are carried out for several validation cases with the detailed experimental data. Numerical results confirm that this supercritical vaporization model is applicable to the high-pressure conditions encountered in the combustion processes of diesel engine.

  • Filler loading (fiber or particulate) usually increases the melt viscosity of polymers. In contrast, the addition of these fillers and fibrillation of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) jointly decreased the viscosity of polymer melts to lower than those of pure component polymers, filler-loaded or LCP-blended ones; and even decreased the viscosity with increasing filler loading. Termed as rheological hybrid effect, this phenomenon correlated well with the LCP fibrillation in these ternary systems. Research taking fillers of various shapes and sizes showed that the filler addition promoted the LCP fibrillation, depending upon thermodynamic and dynamic factors involved.

  • Exergy is the amount of reversible work obtainable when some matter is brought to a state of thermodynamic equilibrium with ambient. This exergy is availability or useful work induced from carnot cycle, and this can calculate the irreversible loss work which occurs within any thermal or power cycle. The exergy ratio is the value of exergy divided by enthalpy of ambient reference, where the quality of energy or enthalpy in substances is evaluated by exergy ratio. Exergy is very important in optimal design method of thermal system or each component, and the value of exergy at given state is calculated by equation. Here, designer can easily understand and find the value of enthalpy because enthalpy is graphically drawn in chart, however exergy did not. In this paper, exergy and exergy ratio of air were drawn on temperature-entropy chart, and we wish to this chart is a help to design, analysis and education.

  • Suction muffler is one of the important component of a compressor for low noise level and high efficiency. The suction muffler which has the complicated flow path gives the higher transmission loss of sound, but lower efficiency of compressor results from the superheating effect and flow loss in suction flow path. It is shown that the computational analysis of fluid dynamics are very popular methods for designing of high performance and low noise suction muffler. To reduce the thermodynamic and flow loss in suction process, the flow path of suction muffler was estimated by FVM(Finite Volume Method) and verified by experiments. And to enlarge the transmission loss of sound, the acoustic properties inside the suction muffler was analyzed by FEM(Finite Element Method) and experiments. The smart muffler which gives a good efficiency and low noise character was developed by using those methods, and the effect was evaluated in compressor by experiment.

  • The mechanism of interaction of four coumarin derivatives (CDS) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied using spectrofluorometric technique. It was found that the coumarin ring common to all CDS makes major contribution to interaction. Binding affinities could be related to parachor values of CDS. Stem-Volmer plots indicated the presence of static component in the quenching mechanism. Results also showed that both tryptophan residues of protein are accessible to CDS. The high magnitude of rate constant of quenching indicated that the process of energy transfer occurs by intermolecular interaction forces and thus CDS binding site is in close proximity to tryptophan residues of BSA. Binding studies in the presence of the hydrophobic probe, 8-anilino-l-naphthalein-sulfonic acid showed that there is hydrophobic interaction between CDS and the probe and they do not share common sites in BSA. Thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures showed that the binding of CDS to BSA involve hydrophobic bonds predominantly. The effects of various metal ions on the binding of CDS with BSA were also investigated.

  • Thermodynamic analysis of water-to-water heat pump system based on the first and second law of thermodynamics is carried out in this study. This analysis shows the distribution of irreversibilities throughout the system components and informs us of a potential improvements with the temperature condition changes. Source water temperature($T_A$), utilization water temperature($T_D$) and temperature differences (${\Delta}T_{AB}$, ${\Delta}T_{CD}$) are important factors to affect system performances such as component irreversibilities, exergetic efficiency and COPH. Advantages and disadvantages with these factors are discussed. Second law optimization phenomena with $T_A$ and ${\Delta}T_{AB}$ are also indicated.

  • This paper deals with heat and mass transfer characteristics and performance evaluation of a counter flow double-tube condenser for a multi-component refrigerant mixture. The local heat and mass transfer characteristics of ternary zeotropic refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a are evaluated for a counter flow double-tube condenser cooled by water. Then, the local values of vapor quality, thermodynamic states at bulk vapor, vapor-liquid interface and bulk liquid, heat flux and condensation mass flux are obtained. The heat exchange performance for ternary zeotropic refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a on the total pressure drop and the heat transfer characteristics are also compared with those for R404A, R410A, R502, R22, R32, Rl23 and R134a.

  • The cross second-derivative of the activation energy,${\theta}$G${\neq}$ , with respect to the two component thermodynamic barriers, ${\theta}$G˚X and ${\theta}$G$^{\circ}C$Y, can be given in terms of a cross-interaction constant (CIC), $\betaXY(\rhoXY)$, and also in terms of the intrinsic barrier,${\theta}$G${\neq}$ , with a simple relationship between the two: $\betaXY$ = $-1}(6${\theta}$G${\neq}$).$ This equation shows that the distance between the two reactants in the adduct (TS, intermediate, or product) is inversely related to the intrinsic barrier. An important corollary is that the Ritchie N+ equation holds (for which $\betaXY$ = 0) for the reactions with high intrinsic barrier. Various experimental and theoretical examples are presented to show the validity of the relationship, and the mechanistic implications are discussed.

  • Binding of N-Alkyl phenothiazines (NAP) to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by spectroscopic methods. It was found that the phenothiazine ring common to all drugs makes major contribution to interaction. However, the nature of alkylamino group at position 10 influences the protein binding significantly. Stern-Volmer plots indicated the presence of static component in the quenching mechanism. The high magnitude of rate constant of quenching indicated that the process of energy transfer occurs by intermolecular interaction and thus the drug-binding site is in close proximity to tryptophan residues of BSA. Binding studies in presence of hydrophobic probe, 8-anilino-1-naphthalein-sulphonic acid showed that there is hydrophobic interaction between drug and the probe and they do not share common sites in BSA. Thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures showed that the binding of NAP to BSA predominantly involve hydrophobic forces. The effects of some cations and anions common ions were investigated on NAP-BSA interactions. The CD spectrum of BSA in presence of drug showedthat binding of drug leads to change in the helicity of the protein.

  • A computer program for thermal design analysis has been developed to predict the performance of an absorption heat transformer. The effects of temperature boost, cooling water temperature and effectiveness of components on the performance were investigated. Not only the detailed thermodynamic states such as temperatures, concentration of the solution, and mass flow rate at each point of the process but also the heat transfer rate in each component could be easily determined with given input parameters. The system's coefficient of performance (COP) was seen to increase with increased effectiveness of components, decreased temperature boost of hot water, and decreased cooling water temperature. Even though the COP increases with increased effectiveness of the components, the variation in the COP is not substantial above certain values of the effectiveness. A reference design point can be selected on this basis.
