  • The handle of fabrics including tactility and sense of visuality are closely related to the factors governing the preferences of end-users. This study shows the change of mechanical properties, thermal properties and optical properties by comparing two fabrics which are woven with circular shaped filaments and with triangular ones. The fabric mechanical characteristics required for primary hand values were evaluated with the KES-FB system. The mechanical properties measured by KES-FB system shows that fabrics made of circular filaments are greater than those made of triangular ones. The thermal properties measured by KES-F7(Thermo Labo II) system shows that the values of the initial maximum value(qmax) and the thermal conductivity(λ) are higher in the fabric made of triangular shaped ones. When the light rays tall on a surface, the fabric made of triangular filaments shows more lustrous than circular ones.

  • In this work, an analytical formulation based on both hyperbolic shear deformation theory and stress function, is presented to study the nonlinear post-buckling response of symmetric functionally graded plates supported by elastic foundations and subjected to in-plane compressive, thermal and thermo-mechanical loads. Elastic properties of material are based on sigmoid power law and varying across the thickness of the plate (S-FGM). In the present formulation, Von Karman nonlinearity and initial geometrical imperfection of plate are also taken into account. By utilizing Galerkin procedure, closed-form expressions of buckling loads and post-buckling equilibrium paths for simply supported plates are obtained. The effects of different parameters such as material and geometrical characteristics, temperature, boundary conditions, foundation stiffness and imperfection on the mechanical and thermal buckling and post-buckling loading capacity of the S-FGM plates are investigated.

  • The microstructure, tensile and impact properties of forgings of 7175 aluminium alloy have been studied as a function of intermediate thermo-mechanical treatment(ITMT) process. The ITMT process is consisted of warm working and recrystallization. In the case that the billet was warm-worked above 60% below $250^{\circ}C$ and recrystallized at $475^{\circ}C$, the grain size revealed about $17{\mu}m$ which corresponds to one third of that of conventional process. The refinement of grain size leaded to the improved ductility and impact energy without sacrifice of tensile strength. It was found that the ITMT processed specimen behaved isotropically due to the near equiaxed grains. It was observed that the ITMT processed specimen showed the mixed fracture mode of transgranular and intergranular, instead of intergranular mode. This change of fracture mode contributed to the improved ductility and impact property.

  • Wrought magnesium alloys show a low formability at room temperature, and a remarkable anisotropy of mechanical properties make it difficult to use them in a deformation process in industry. The microstructure and crystallographic texture of metals are developed during thermo-mechanical processes, and they are significant to the understanding of the mechanical properties of metals. This work studies the microstructure, texture development and tensile properties of the extruded AZ31 Mg alloy after rolling at 100 and $300^{\circ}C$. After 40% rolling at $100^{\circ}C$, many deformed twins were observed and a relatively weak texture developed. The basal poles were split and rotated towards the rolling direction about $20^{\circ}$. During 60% rolling at $300^{\circ}C$, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) took place and developed a strong <0001>II ND fiber texture, which influenced the poor formability at room temperature.

  • Composite materials, known for their excellent mechanical properties and lightweight characteristics, are applied in various engineering fields. Recently, efforts have been made to develop an automotive battery protection panel using a plain-woven composite composed of glass fiber and polypropylene to reduce the weight of automobiles. However, excessive warpage occurs during the GF/PP compression molding process, which makes car assembly challenging. This study aims to develop a model that predicts the warpage during the compression molding process. Obtaining out-of-plane properties such as elastic or shear modulus, essential for predicting warpages, is tricky. Existing mechanical methods also have limitations in calculating these properties for woven composite materials. To address this issue, finite element analysis is conducted using representative volume elements (RVE) for woven composite materials. A warpage prediction model is developed based on the estimated physical properties of GF/PP composite materials obtained through representative volume elements. This model is expected to be used for reducing warpages in the compression molding process.

  • In this work, the thermal and mechanical properties of vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs)-reinforced difunctional epoxy (EP) composites were investigated in the presence of the 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and $2wt\%$ VGCNFs. The thermal properties of the VGCNFs/EP composites were studied by thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The mechanical properties of the VGCNFs/EP composites were also examined by universal testing machine (UTM), falling impact test, and the friction and wear tests. From experimental results, the thermal and mechanical properties of the VGCNFs/EP composites were improved with increasing the VGCNFs contents. This was due to the increase of crosslinking structure of the composites, resulting in improving the mechanical interlockings between VGCNFs and epoxy resins in the present composite system.

  • Various poly(amic acid)s were synthesized from PMDA/BPDA/p-PDA/ODA with different mole ratios and effectively converted into 4-component polyimide films by thermal imidization. The chemical structures and thermo-mechanical properties of polyimide films were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA), thermo-mechanical analyzer (TMA), dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and universal tensile machine (UTM). The tensile strength, modulus, and thermal properties of polyimides films increased with the amount of rigid PMDA and p-PDA, while the elongation and moisture absorption of polyimide films increased with the amount of flexible BPDA and ODA. One of 4-component polyimide films exhibited a similar coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value to that of copper when it was composed of PMDA : BPDA : p-PDA : ODA with the ratio of 5 : 5 : 4 : 6. Thus, this polyimide film could be useful for a base film for flexible copper clad laminates (FCCL) of flexible printed circuit boards.

  • Automotive today has been transforming to an electronic product by adopting a lot of convenience and safety features, suggesting that joining materials and their mechanical reliabilities are getting more important. In this study, a Sn-Cu-Cr-Ca solder composition having a high melting temperature ($>230^{\circ}C$) was fabricated and its joint properties and reliability was investigated with an aim to evaluate the suitability as a joining material for electronics of engine room. Furthermore, mechanical properties change under complex environment were compared with several existing solder compositions. As a result of contact angle measurement, favorable spreadability of 84% was shown and the average shear strength manufactured with corresponding composition solder paste was $1.9kg/mm^2$. Also, thermo-mechanical reliability by thermal shock and vibration test was compared with that of the representative high temperature solder materials such as Sn-3.5Ag, Sn-0.7Cu, and Sn-5.0Sb. In order to fabricate the test module, solder balls were made in joints with ENIG-finished BGA and then the BGA chip was reflowed on the OPS-finished PCB pattern. During the environmental tests, resistance change was continuously monitored and the joint strength was examined after tests. Sn-3.5Ag alloy exhibited the biggest degradation rate in resistance and shear stress and Sn-0.7Cu resulted in a relatively stable reliability against thermo-mechanical stress coming from thermal shock and vibration.

  • The in situ composites based on poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) and thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) have been an area of increasing interest and study, since LCP exhibits high chemical stabilities and excellent thermo mechanical properties such as high strength and modulus. In a binary, however, poor compatibility and interfacial adhesions between two phases frequently results in deteriorated mechanical properties. (omitted)
