  • In this study, the economic evaluation for imported coals was conducted for power plant based on thermo-dynamical performance analysis. The number of coal types considered was 1,755 imported by five power generation companies in Korea during the 2010-2012. The higher heating value (HHV) of the coals ranged 4,000-6,500 kcal/kg, mostly sub-bituminous. The 1D thermo-dynamical performance modeling was performed for a 500 MWe standard power plant using PROATES code. It was founded that the low rank coals had negative effects on the plant efficiency mainly due to the increased heat loss by moisture, hydrogen and flue gas. Based on the performance analysis, the economic performance of the coals was evaluated. The apparent price of low-rank coals tended to be significantly lower than design coal; for example, the unit price of coal with a HHV of 4,000 kcal/kg was 57% of the reference coal having 6,080 kcal/kg. Considering the negative effects leading to a decrease in the thermal performance, heating value compensation, and increased parasite load, the corrected unit cost for the coal with 4,000 kcal/kg was 90.7% of the reference coal. Overall, the cost saving by imported coals was not high as expected.

  • Four thermo-tolerant lines of silkworm, Bombyx mori, (L.) viz., A HT, B HT (Chinese type) and F HT, G HT (Japanese type) were evolved by utilizing the breeding resource material (identified from initial screening at a temperature of 31 ${\pm} 1^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity 85 ${\pm}$ 5%) through conventional breeding. These tolerant lines were crossed with productive breeds and forty four hybrids were evaluated on eight economic traits by the Multiple Trait Evaluation Index Method. Ten hybrids were short-listed based on the average evaluation index value larger than 50 for eight economic traits studied. The identified ten hybrids recorded higher index values (> 50) for most of the traits studied. Single hybrid G ${\times}$ CSR12 indicated average index value larger than 50 for six traits viz., pupation number (58), cocoon weight (67), shell weight (65), average filament length (74), raw silk % (69), reelability % (51) except for shell ratio % (41). The standard deviation of the cocoons in the above hybrid was 8.41 in the hybrid cocoon length and width measurement. However, two selected hybrids viz., A ${\times}$ CSR5 and G ${\times}$ CSR13 recorded average index value larger than 50 for all the traits viz., pupation number (57, 60), cocoon weight (50, 54), shell weight (56, 57), shell ratio percentage (59, 53), average filament length (55, 60), raw silk percentage (63, 67) and reelability percentage (53, 53). The standard deviation of the cocoons in the two selected hybrids viz., A ${\times}$ CSR5 and G ${\times}$ CSR13 was 8.41 and 8.06 respectively in the cocoon length and width measurement.

  • High-speed crafts suffer from losing a huge amount of their machinery energy in the form of heat loss with the exhaust gases. This will surely increase the annual operating cost of this type of ships and an adverse effect on the environment. This paper introduces a suggestion that may contribute to overcoming such problems. It presents the possibility of reusing the energy lost by the ships' exhaust gases as heating source for an absorption air condition unit onboard high-speed crafts. As a numerical example; the proposed method was investigated at a high-speed craft operating in Red Sea between Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The results obtained are very satisfactory. It showed the possibility of providing the required ship's air condition cooling load during sailing and in port. Economically, this will reduce the annual ship's operating cost. Moreover, it will achieve a valuable reduction of ship's emissions.

  • Screening of fifteen bivoltine silkworm breeds of Bombyx mori Linn at a temperature of $31{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 85${\pm}$5% resulted in the identification of eight thermo-tolerant breeds. The survival and cocoon shell ratio of the tolerant breeds ranged from 72.7 to 78.7% and 20.0 to 20.1% respectively. The tolerant breeds comprised of four oval breeds and four dumb-bell breeds. Eight foundation crosses prepared by crossing the oval and dumb-bell parents among themselves were screened at a temperature of $31{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 85{\pm}5%. The performance of the foundation crosses on 11 economic characters were analysed by employing Multipie Trait Evaluation Index method. Four foundation crosses which scored average index value > 50 were selected as breeding parents and breeding initiated for the evolution of thermo-tolerant bivoltine silkworm breeds. The methodology and the results of the foundation crosses reared both at 31{\pm}1$^{\circ}C$ and at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ temperatures, are discussed.

  • 300,000 tons of waste tires are annually being produced with development of the automotive industry in Korea. Landfill and incineration treatment system are causing the economic problem through secondary environmental pollution and waste. Therefore, as one of the ways to take advantage of this, Thermo-Plastic Vulcanized (TPV) composite was prepared by the ground waste tire and plastic powders. The waste tire powder was gained by mechanical fracturing through crushers. The waste tire powder was ground by a shear crushing method and a 2-stage disk mill method instead of cutting crushing one. The waste tire powder of 50 mesh was mixed with Polypropylene(PP) in various proportions. TPVs were prepared by an extrusion, and tensile and impact tests were performed. In addition, the same experiments were repeated in 40, 80, 140 mesh conditions in order to observe size effect of waste tire powders.

  • A conventional silica gel/water adsorption chiller has been analyzed numerically. A novel non-dimensional mathematical model has been presented to analyze the design effect of different components of an adsorption chiller. The design parameters of this system are characterized by the number of transfer unit, NTU, of different components and the inert material alpha number, ${\alpha}$of different components of the systems. Results show that condenser NTU$\sub$a/ has the most influential effect on the system performance, which is fellowed by absorber NTU$\sub$e/. It is also seen that coefficient of performance (COP) and non-dimensional specific cooling capacity increases with the increase of NTU$\sub$a/ and NTU$\sub$e/, but decreases with the increase of inert material alpha number. A thermo-economic data of the adsorption chiller and some other heat pump systems those are in practical operation are also presented.

  • The occurrence of detrimental substances in the paper machine leads to reduced economic performance of paper mills through reduced capacities due to increased paper breaks and cleaning times. In this article the latest generation of BASF's laser optical pitch particle counter is employed in the examination of a paper mill operating two paper machines and using a mixture of thermo-mechanical pulp and recycled fibres. The potential of the new instrument to differentiate between particles on the basis of size and chemical composition is discussed. In addition, direct evidence of the periodic and locational variation of detrimental substances in the paper machine is given. Finally, an example of the application of BASF's laser optical pitch particle counter in the selection of a suitable fixative system for a complex furnish is presented.

  • Seaweed aquaculture technologies have developed dramatically over the past 70 years mostly in Asia and more recently in Americas and Europe. However, there are still many challenges to overcome with respect to the science and to social acceptability. The challenges include the development of strains with thermo-tolerance, disease resistance, fast growth, high concentration of desired molecules, the reduction of fouling organisms and the development of more robust and cost efficient farm systems that can withstand storm events in offshore environments. It is also important to note that seaweed aquaculture provides ecosystem services, which improve conditions of the coastal waters for the benefit of other living organisms and the environment. The ecosystem services role of seaweed aquaculture and its economic value will also be quantitatively estimated in this review.

  • Recently, a longitudinal tunnel construction has increased because of subway construction extension, geomorphological effect and the development of construction Technologies etc. When the fire occurs in a tunnel and an underground structure, the many damage of human life and the economic losses are caused. In Korea, fire resistance character study of a tunnel and an underground structure is proceeding. However, when a concrete is exposed to high temperature, study of load carrying capacity reduction and stability evaluation for spalling of a concrete is not enough. Therefore in this study, fire resistance character of a concrete evaluated according to time heating temperature curve(RABT and RWS) and a result compared on virtual fire accident in order to apply fire scenario. Also this study performed thermo-mechanical coupled analysis of a FEM-based numerical technique and estimated fire-induced damage of a tunnel and an underground structure.

  • Exhumation mechanism of migmatite in orogenic belts provides insights into thermo-mechanical evolution of lithosphere in association with orogeny. This study deals with kinematics of structures in and around the Gwangcheon Gneiss, as a preliminary study on exhumation mechanism, which is a main constituent of a domal structure (viz., Oseosan Dome) in the Hongseong area, southwestern margin of the Gyeonggi massif. Geological structures in the Gwangcheon Gneiss, which mainly comprises southern and northwestern part of the Oseosan Dome, generally have kinematic component of top-outward shear. This feature is likely to represent diapiric dome-up movement. In addition, a high strain zone, by which the tectonic domain involving the Gwangcheon Gneiss is bounded on the west, show structural features with normal sense of shear component. Taking available (thermo)chronological data into account, it is interpreted that activation of the high strain zone and exhumation of the Gwangcheon Gneiss occurred during Late Triassic, when the Gyeonggi massif was widely affected by post-collisional processes. It means that the Gwangcheon Gneiss was diapirically moved up and exhumed in the footwall of extensional high strain zone in association with Triassic post-collisional processes.
