The effects of geologic structures such as rock joins and bedding planes on the thermal conductivity of a discontinuous rock mass are studied. The expressions for the equivalent thermal conductivities of jointed rock masses are derived and found to be anisotropic. The degree of anisotropy depends primarily on the thermal properties contrast between the joint phase and surrounding intact rock, the joint density expressed as volume fraction and the inclination angle of the joint. Within the context of 2-dimensional finite element heat transfer scheme, the isotherms around a circular hole are analyzed for both the isotropic and anisotropic rock masses in 3 different thermal boundary conditions. i.e. temperature, heat flux and convection boundary conditions. The temperature in the stratified anisotripic rock mass is greatly influenced by the thermal properties of the rock formation in contact with the heat source. Using the excavation-temperature coupled elastic plastic finite element method, analyzed is the thermo-mechanical stability of a circular opening subjected to 10$0^{\circ}C$ at a depth of 527m. It is found that the thermal stress concentration was enough to deteriorate the stability and form a plastic yield zone around the opening, in contrast to the safety factor greater than 2 resulted form the excavation-only analysis.
The wear behavior of $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$deposited on casted aluminum alloy (ASTM A356) by APS (Air Plasma Spray) against SiC ball has been investigated in this work. Wear tests were carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$coating is lower than that of pure $Al_2$O$_3$coating(APS). $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$coating indicated the existence of the optimal coating thickness. It is found that voids and pores of coating surface resulted in the generation of cracks, and the cohesive of splats and the porosity of surface play a role in wear characteristics. It is suggested that the mismatch of thermal expansion of substrate and coating play an important role in wear performance. Tension and compression under thermo-mechanical stress may be occurred by the mismatch between thermal expansion of substrate and coating. The crack propagation above interface is observed in SEM.
The goal of this work is to establish the reliability of FCA welded joints for high strength EH36-TMCP ultra thick plate. For this, heat conduction and thermo elasto-plastic analyses have been conducted on a multi-pass, X-groove, butt-joint model to clarify the thermal and mechanical behavior (residual stresses, magnitude of the stresses, and their production and distribution mechanisms) of the weld joint. In addition, the results of the welding residual stress obtained from thermo elasto-plastic analysis was verified and compared with results obtained by XRD analysis.
This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior and temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of steel sheet for an auto-body. In order to Identify the temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R and SPRC45E, uniaxial tension tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec, and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C\;to\;200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained with the static tensile test and at the intermediate strain rate is from the high speed tensile test. The experimental results show that the strain rate sensitivity increases at low temperature and it decreases at high temperature. It means that as the strain rate getting increasing, the variation of flow stress is more sensitive on the temperature. The results also indicates that the material properties of SPRC35R is more depend on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E.

A heat transfer analysis for the two-dimensional (2-D) steady state using finite difference method (FDM) is performed to predict the thermal behavior of the primary first-wall (FW) system of fusion reactor under various geometric and thermo-hydraulic conditions, such as the beryllium (Be) armor thickness, pitch of cooling tube, and coolant velocity. The FW consists of authentic steel (type 316 stainless steel solution annealed) for cooling tubes, Cu for cooling tubes embedding material, and Be for a protective armor, based on the International Thermonuclear Experiment Reactor (ITER) report. The present 2-D analysis, the control volume discretized with hybrid grid (rectangular grid and polar grid) and Gauss-Seidel iteration method are adapted to solve the governing equations. In the present study, geometric and thermo-hydraulic parameters are optimized with consideration of several limitations. Consequently, it is suggested that the adequate pitch of cooling tube is 22-32mm, the beryllium armor thickness is 10-12mm, and that the coolant velocity is 4.5m/s-6m/s for $100^{\circ}C$ of inlet coolant temperature. The cooling tube should locate near beryllium armor. But, it would be better for locating the center of Cu wall, considering problems of material and manufacturing. Also, 2-D analysis neglecting the axial temperature distribution of cooling tube is appropriate, regarding the discretization error in axial direction.
In the resent years, as the research and the development of micro and precision machinery become active, the interest of micro actuators using SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) has been increased. But, no detailed researches between the thermo-dynamic property in Nitinol alloy have been done yet. In this study, the thermal property of high temperature Nitinol shape memory alloy were evaluated using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The structure property was investigated using X-ray diffraction(XRD). A dynamic mechanical analyzer(DMA) with three point bending mode was used to study storage and loss modulus of shape memory alloy according to the thirteen frequencies in the temperature range between 30 and $200^{\circ}C$. The effects of the temperature heating/cooling rate, the frequency on the damping capacity have been systematically investigated. Such a frequency and temperature changes also influenced significantly to the damping behavior of the shape memory alloy. It was also found that Nitinol exhibited high damping capacity during phase transformation.
This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior of steel sheet for an auto-body including temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity. In order to identify the temperature-dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R, SPRC45E and TRIP60, uniaxial tensile tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained from the static tensile test and that at the intermediate strain rate is obtained from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the variation of the flow stress and fracture elongation becomes sensitive to the temperature as the strain rate increases. It is observed that the dynamic strain aging occurs with TRIP60 at the temperature above $150^{\circ}C$. Results also indicate that the flow stress and tincture elongation of SPRC35R are more dependent on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E and TRIP60.
Computational models for analyzing the in-reactor behavior of metallic fuel pins under transient conditions in liquid-metal reactors are developed and implemented in the TRAMAC (TRAnsient thermo-Mechanical Analysis Code) for a metal fuel rod under transient operation conditions. Not only the basic models for a fuel rod performance but also some sub-models used for transient condition are installed in TRAMAC. Among the models, a fission gas release model, which takes the multi-bubble size distribution into account to characterize the lenticular bubble shape and the saturation condition on the grain boundary and the cladding deformation model have been developed based mainly on the existing models in the MAC-SIS code. Finally, cladding strains are calculated from the amount of thermal creep, irradiation creep, and irradiation swelling. The cladding strain model in TRAMAC predicts well the absolute magnitudes and gen-eral trends of their predictions compared with those of experimental data. TRAMAC results for the FH-1,2,6 pins are more conservative than experimental data and relatively reasonable than those of FPIN2 code. From the calculation results of TRAMAC, it is apparent that the code is capable of predicting fission gas release, and cladding deformation for LMR metal fuel finder transient operation conditions. The results show that in general, the predictions of TRAMAC agree well with the available irradiation data.
Each part of drum brake system is loaded by continual mechanical force and thermal force every time of braking, so enough strength and stability are required. Thermal characteristic is one of the important factors in drum brake systems design. This paper presents the thermal performance such as temperature distribution and thermal contact stress of drum brake system considering several braking patterns; 80th heat braking test mode, heat fade braking test mode, general road mode, steep slope road mode and off road mode. Transient heat transfer analysis and Thermo elastic contact analysis is executed to obtain the temperature distribution, and to evaluate thermal stress of drum brake by using ABAQUS/Standard code. This procedure of analysis can effectively be used to improve the quality problem of brake system and to get design guideline of the new product.
