  • The various degradation phenomena, such as the evolution of gases, tan $\delta$, moisture content and total acid number in power transformer insulation oil, have been measured and analyzed. Mineral oil has been degraded at laboratory by the forced thermal stress of $60^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}C$ respectively. Thermal aging oil has been degraded about 17, 34, 72 days. Also, we extracted insulation oil from working transformers. We measured gases dissolved in samples, tan $\delta$, moisture content, total acid number. Activation energy and resistivity is calculated from them. It is found that gases and tan $\delta$ increases as partial discharge and total acid number increases and that conductivity of the sample increases as activation energy increases.

  • The thermal degradation of electroplated black chrome coating on Ni substrates has been investigated by using Auger electron spectroscopy technique. The sample was prepared by electroplating at $20^{\circ}C$ for 20 seconds with the current density at $0.4A/cm^2$. Its surface oxidation process was investigated with 1 hour annealed sample for a temperature range of $300-550^{\circ}C$. While its optical solar absorption was dominated by fine metallic Cr particles, thermal degradation was occurred primarily by oxidation of metallic Cr particles as increasing the annealing temperature.

  • Commercial rubber(IR, NR, BR), SBR, and tire were degraded by thermal degradation process. The oil yield of rubbers and tire ranges about 37~86%, it was increased with increase of operation temperature in pyrolysis. And the yield of pyrolytic oil was increased with increase of heating rate. The maximum oil yields of IR, NR, BR, SBR, and tire were 80, 73, 83, 86 and 55% each at $700^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $20^{\circ}C$/min, respectively. The pyrolytic oil components were consisted of about 50 aromatic compounds. The calorific value of purolytic oil of commercial rubber, SBR, and tire was measured by calorimeter, it was 39~40 kJ/g. The BET surface area of pyroblack was $47~63m^2/g$. The optimum condition of pyrolysis was operating temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ with heating rate of $20^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the pyrolytic oil and pyroblack are possible to alternative fuel and carbon black.

  • Characteristics of thermal degradation on cure conditions of DGEBA/MDA/GN system were investigated. Epoxy resin system was degradated in one stage. The activation energy of DGEBA/MDA/GN system had the lowest value in the cure time of 1.0 hr at $80^{\circ}C$ before at $150^{\circ}C$ for 1.0 hr and it increased with the pre-cure time at $80^{\circ}C$.

  • Effects of contact damage and residual stress for two kinds of dental restorative layered ceramics, porcelain/alumina and porcelain/zirconia bilayers, were observed with Hertzian and Vickers indentation methods. Indentation stress-strain behavior of each material, strength degradation of the coating material, and crack propagation behavior in the coating layer after Vickers indentation were examined by an optical microscope. As a result, porcelain as coating materials showed the classical brittleness. It was inferred that damage and strength in two bilayer system were dependent on thermal expansion mismatch between the coating material and the substrate, which affected the strength degradation. Residual stress resulting from thermal expansion mismtch was formed in the coating layer, and specially in the case of porcelain/zirconia, residual stress was eliminated as coating thickness decreased.

  • Algin and chitosan are known as biodegradable natural polymers. PVA is useful for the production of water soluble packaging, paper, textile sizes. PVA/Algin and PVA/chitosan films were prepared by solution blends method in the weight ratio of chitosan, algin for the purpose of useful biodegradable films. Thermal and mechanical properties of blend films such as DSC, impact strength, tensile strength and morphology by SEM were determined. As a result, The ratio of 10.0wt% PVA/chitosan films were similar to PVA at thermal and mechanical properties. PVA/Algin films were found that phase separation was occured as more than 25wt% increasing the blend ratio of algin. PVA/Algin films were observed to be less partially compatibility than 10wt% increasing the blend ratio of algin by DSC, mechanical properties and SEM. Blend films were completely degraded pH 4.0 better than 7.0, 10.0 in the buffer solution. Also, they were rapidly degraded in the enzyme( glucosidase) solution better than pH solution by enzymolysis.

  • Various characteristics - mechanical propertis, thermal cyclic hydriding characteristics and resistance to degradation by $H_2O$, CO in hydrogen - of hydrogen storage alloy powder compacts using PTFE and silicon sealant as a polymer binder were studied. Diametral tensile strength of 10wt% PTFE and 5wt% silicon sealant added compacts showed relatively high value of $4kg/cm^2$ and $10kg/cm^2$, respectively. Compacts show a good resistance to degradation by $H_2O$ in hydrogen. But hydrogen absorption rate and capacity of compacts were decreased by CO in hydrogen with the number of cycles. Cu coated and PTFE bonded compacts showed very small decrease of capacity and a good strength even after 1000 cycles of thermal hydriding and dehydriding.

  • In the paper, aging of insulating oil in pole transformer has been studied by performing accelerated thermal aging test. Dissolved gases were extracted by air bubbling method. Concentration of dissolved gases were modified by extraction ratio of each gases in insulating oil. Aging of insulating materials were proceeded by thermal degradation and oxidation reaction. Both of the reactions followed zeroch order kinetics. Formation rate equations for hydrocarbons, carbon oxides, and hydrogen were derived. It was conformed by gas analysis and UV-Visible spectrophotometric method that iron core and copper coil in pole transformer act as catalyst during the aging process.

  • In this study, the electrostatic capacity and dielectric loss tangent for $20{\mu}m$ thick thermal conductivity silicone rubber which is heated at 80 degrees for 8 hours has been measured at temperature of $30^{\circ}C{\sim}170^{\circ}C$, frequency of 0.1~1 MHz. The results of degradation evaluation by this study are as follows. In low frequency, it found that the electrostatic capacity decreased with increasing temperature. On the other hand, it confirmed that the range of the electrostatic capacity narrowed with increasing frequency. It confirmed that there are the carboxylic acid structure and C-O bonding at range of wave number 1,000cm-1 to 1,300cm-1.

  • To found out the degradation characteristic of transformer insulation, insulation material was depisited into transformer oil and heated. Due to the thermal stress which added to insulation, the density of carbon dioxide which included in transformer oil was mesured by using the gas density detection equipment of gas sensor and air circulation method. As a result, it didn't match with the transformer supervision standard. But it was found that as thermal stress increased, the density of carbon dioxide propertionally increased.
